Haven't seen this comic in a while. Got reminded of it while playing some FFXIV, and got hit with a wave of nostalgia remembering some older MMOs I used to play before they all shut down.

Shout out to everyone that used to play Runescape Classic, Starwars Galaxies and even Club Penguin. I'll miss the online friends I made back then. To where ever you are now.

Watching videos of players gathered as Dalamud fell as the FFXIV 1.0 servers ended made me sad. But now the game is great at least

I haven't played many MMOs, but my first was Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom, and I was there the night that went offline. That was rough.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Yahtzee Croshaw's "Mogworld" yet. An interesting take on AI in video games.

proof that you can make a compelling virtual world story without having the "If you die in the game you die IRL" BS.

Or, Why Turing-Capable AIs in an MMO Would Be an Ethical Nightmare

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ross Scott has tried to raise awareness of publishers killing games. Worth a look I'd say.

This reminded me of that heart fixer comic. Haven't seen that one in ages either

Wild star, man. If only wildstar had come out a year or two ago, instead of 2014

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I still miss it!

Everquest and Everquest 2 are still running and making expansion add ons

My first PC Ran ME. I was too young to really know it was bad. Had a blast playing the few games i had on it.

Making the transition to a new mmo

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The fact the BE has to be edited in SFM vs the Mikote have base emotes to get by kinda says it all.

SWG dies long before they shut the servers down. RIP you gem of a game.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep. People wandered off to DAoC, EQ2 and WoW. I just couldn't get into a grind game after the NGE killed the greatest sandbox MMO ever.

Maybe when you close your eyes for the last time in this world, friend, you'll wake up in the Inn room in Eorzea.

I can remember the end of Planetside 1. Such glorious sadness

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At least with Planetside, the sequel was already up when they shut down the servers. Maybe not quite the same, but better than nothing.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is how Overlord starts.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I feel that. I've left a few worlds behind in my day too. Like the ones my friends and I made while playing D&D every summer.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love this artist. They've done stuff like the heart smith too.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Frame 1, If you can accurately name it you can have it, also, what in that shop WOULDNT you want?... GO!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fuck. This was deep

I miss Guild Wars.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

GW1 was amazing. Wish I could go back to finish some of the expansions I never had the time to.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The GW Defs stated they can let the GW1 servers run indefinitely since they need little to no resources (compared to a modern mmo).

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's still there. There is still an active, albeit small community that still plays it.

I am 100% convinced that someone read this, loved it, and wrote Free Guy.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

So Mogworld?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure if NPCs had agency and awareness like that this would count as murder. Like goddamn, that's a real person.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure by today’s standards, but if you were raised in a time where you toaster had that awareness would it be more than a toaster to you?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This artists stuff is hella deep. And mostly very disturbing. While I suggest it. Read at own risk.

4 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

Good deep or concealing flaws by trying to be deep?

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Good deep.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Fantastic deep. I own a printed copy of their works and I cherish it as equal to my C&H hardback collection.

That’s high praise…

I miss the early days of EQ2. Was my first MMO.. somehow managed to make friends in it.. got into a great guild.. then they drifted away..

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I played on Befallen for a long time. All the way through Velious. It was a beautiful game for a long time imho before it became what it is.

Antonia Bayle. Wasn't an RPer but they were friendly. Played a Dark Elf paladin named "Darkly" cause I was like.. 13. 1/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guild I was in was led by Scott Adams (old school video game dev... not the Dilbert douchebag) he was known as the "Hydra" on the server 2/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He'd play 4 characters at once. If ya ever asked for help he would always be willing to bring his merry band. 3/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Warched Free Guy recently. Same-ish plot.

4 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 2

I've yet to finish the movie, I feel like they picked the wrong main character.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

I was thinking the same

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This basically is the plot, but less (a lot less) serious

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

*knowing Ryan Reynolds was inspired by. I am betting he played, or knows someone close who has played, a now dead virtual universe.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Long shot but I watched a anime probably 10-15 years ago were in the last episode they all cried because they knew they would no longer

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Exist the moment the last episode stopped. I think they were teenage girls but honestly only remember them begging to keep living.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Do you remember the name of the anime?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jesus Fucking Christ! Series endings are hard enough without them piling that shit on me! WTF are you trying to do to me writers?!!

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Right? I started tearing up at Gravity Falls, fuck i don't want to watch that show he's talking about!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, God! Can you imagine?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Iain Banks touched on this in his Culture novels: there's a point at which simulations become so real that shutting them down...

4 years ago | Likes 158 Dislikes 0

I don't remember this. Which book?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hydrogen Sonata, I think, but Surface Detail also talks about simulations (albeit from a different angle)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey I have it in my bookshelf but haven't read it yet! Thanks for the reminder, some Banks will surely be good fit with my depression - oh..

Becomes equivalent to murder. And so the AIs that host them are obligated to continue them indefinitely.

4 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 0

Ted Chiang has a similar one in his short story collection Exhalation called The Lifecycle of Software Objects about digital pets.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

SUCH a fantastic book.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I imagine the most humane way would be to run simpler and simpler programs around the sentient ones until all the sentient ones die off natu

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But why would MMO NPCs have been programmed to age and die? And isn't going back and patching it in just to enable that just slow murder?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, if they were designed to be human, then aging and death would be par for the course, but you're right, patching it...

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Would be a huge ethical question. Alternatively, assuming tech permits, embodiment in the real could be an option.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but the Culture doesn't believe in aging and dying naturally. To them, immortality is just the standard.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't that prison then?

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

More like a universe simulation.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suppose it's kind of a Garden of Eden type thing. Without players, the NPCs wouldn't know anything was wrong. But if they bite the apple..

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

In the same way that Earth is a prison, I suppose. But, nevertheless, plenty of people manage to be happy on it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ask Moriatry

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funny enough, some species start using simulations to realize their cultural ideas of hell.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That was so terrifying, mostly because I know of far too many people who would think that was a perfectly OK thing to set up.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I suppose it depends on how much freedom the AI grants the agents, and whether they're aware of their simulated nature.

4 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

One of those Reddit/YouTube "humans are space orcs" stories was about our world being a simulation where humanity becomes the /

In this case they are literally simulating hell and a lot of people are trying to shut the Hells down.
