This was my first ever CNC project. I worked for 38 straight hours and broke 3 end mills. I'm very happy to finally have a working project.

No space to store your mustard or whisk now. -1

Discount Link from GMM?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, just leave them in the box they came in at this point.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Were you tired afyer working 38 straight hours on this?

7 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

If I saw silverware sold with such a perfect tray included, it'd immediately be the set I bought, and I'd throw out whatever I already had.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's cool... and it may just be perspective.. but I don't think my fat fingers gonna fit in there comfortably to fish out a fork or spoon!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All of my knives are left-facing, though!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Perfect for my ocd ass

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love it so much!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And then you buy a new set of spoons and the whole system is FUCKED. In that way, it's a bit like hardware; useless after one month.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where do you put that one fork that you hate for no rational reason?

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

In your eye

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

the bin

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How am I supposed to put spoons in the knife slot?

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Easy there, satan.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Use one of the knives in there to carve it to shape...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you lose any capacity with the new one?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually GAIN capacity because the stack doesn't fall over and they take up less space when stacked.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn man! You going to take custom orders for those?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Should have put a gap on the other side of the knives so that you can pick them up easier.

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 7

Only the last knife should be difficult to pick up since you can just push on the gap between them & the beveled edge will make it slide.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The knives are actually the easiest to pickup with only the gap on the inside b/c the knives are twice as thick, rounded, and don't stack.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

If I were to penetrate the solid perimeter, the North and South halves would be connected only by the 1/16 thick bottom. Wouldn't last.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Even with a flat handled knife, you could pin it against the outer edge for leverage

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Penetrate the solid perimeter" That prompted a spontaneous replay of one of my engineering professors lectures from well over 10 years ago.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What problem is this attempting to solve?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are those Cherry MX forks?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Until your wife buys a new set!!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm never marrying again.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

38 hours? For that?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was 6 minutes. 38 hours was learning alone from nothing.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It would annoy me that I likely very rarely use the bottom cutlery so that the wear&tear is disproportionate

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Man there's a lot of hate in these comments. You did great! I think it looks very cool.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah, right? like dude he's RAD. and CUTE.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But what about the other stuff?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's broken about the original?

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tons of wasted space and material? The side-by-side comparison at the end kinda shows that....

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I mean, it's not "broken" since it's meant to be used for variable cutlery sizes. But if you can build a custom one, why not?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My OCD

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Is that real OCD or internet OCS LLLOOLL!!11

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But where are you supposed to keep the mustard now?

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly. Take my upvote.

7 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

I may or may not have made this specifically to keep my partner from putting shit in there that doesn't belong.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Have you made an insert for the pancakes too?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LOL

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or the pancakes?!?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He needs to put in another 45 hours and make the one with the mustard packet section

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah but, where ya gonna put the whisk?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Works awesome for that specific set of cutlery. Now make a custom one for EVERY possible set.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

That's the reason all the organizers you buy in the stores suck. Because they try to work for EVERYTHING, they work well for NOTHING.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

Think mine works perfectly fine to be honest, it does what it says on the box, but well done on being unique :).

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree! Your organizer is awesome and I am insanely jealous!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Why does this have anything to do with being a "mechanical keyboard enthusiast"?

7 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 2

This is covered by other comments.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 21

I'm saying tho

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP took the time to hit reply coulda just answered down here. Anywho, its not directly but he's using the project as practice to do

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

something related in the future to mechanical keyboards or making them. Personally I think the flak is deserved since its only tangetially

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

related. Like if I was a fish enthusiast and was showing you glassblowing a vase. Yeah its to make a fishbowl in the future but not really

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

relevant to the post the way I phrased it. Course its Imgur. Everybody will move on in 12 hours when its not on front page so no worries.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Most people have a mish-mash of at least 2 sets of flatware in their drawer. These types of inserts do not work for them.

7 years ago | Likes 563 Dislikes 18

Mish-mash some sense into these godless heathens!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 types of insert.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean my silverware drawer is smaller than a small cutting board. This would do wonders for me @op

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I deliberately bought two identical sets just to avoid that issue.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have 4 slots in mine then one horizontal in the front. for big things. From left to right I have forks, spoons, dull knives, sharp knives.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have aix of everything including flatware from an Applebees that was closing. Stacked atop the fancy flatware and my college fork.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 sets? Those are rookie numbers

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've still got a few pieces of flatware from my parents house and the mess hall at college. from 18 years ago.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You give those back right now!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found all of my forks, spoons, knives, and a spatula. Also a bowl. Needless to say, they are all different sizes and shapes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP is not most people ;-)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most people? Citation needed.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've got three sets. Wait... four. But I also buy kitchen stuff at secondhand stores because everything I touch breaks. This is cheaper.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no, you use two drawers, one for each set, (and a third draw for all your random ones, like plastic, old kids sets, etc......

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do i just have way more draw space then average?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't speak for everybody, but I have a hodgepodge, myself.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just make it to fit the largest of each utensil.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

then they dont stack well

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

YOU DON'T STACK WELL!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*gasps* How could you say that?!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a mish-mash and then went to Ikea and selected the style that naturally stacked the best. Last photo is the old vs. the new.

7 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 7

I also have an ikea set; but also kept my old set.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now try to clean it a month later =)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People should also get like 3 copies of the same set simply to delay the drama of discontinued sets when they need more.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I agree with your assessment. I have never found silverware that I like as much as my parents' old stuff. Everything sucks compared to it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which style did you get, and would you be willing to share the CAD or DXW file?

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It keeps refusing to let me post Dropbox URLS so add /s/gnogkv92thpjik6/utensil%20organizer.svg to their domain.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Could you perhaps add this info to the post itself. Super useful. Looks amazing! Great Work.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10307537/ I'll see if I can find my SVG file.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Thank you!!! I’ve got a few CNC files if ya feel like swapping

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

oh, Mr Fancy-Shmancy bought the fine Ikea silverware

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm a simple man

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

no, all joking aside. This is effing awesome.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Says the man who designed and CNC'd his own silverware tray...

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But how is it related to mechanical keyboards?

7 years ago | Likes 1150 Dislikes 17

You use a keyboard to control the CNC router

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Some mechanical keyboard enthusiasts get into making their own boards and that sometimes involves using a CNC or laser cutter.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, "When a dog-fucker decides to fix the silverware drawer" didn't sound like it would roll in as many likes and fav's.

7 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 3

Build 100 bridges yada yada fuck one elephant yada yada

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wanted a reason to tell everyone they're a mechanical keyboard enthusiasts and couldn't think of one but recently made a silverware tray.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

They do this kind of things for making their wooden keyboard cases I guess

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Its like vapers and vegans, they'll let you know even if you dont need to know.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There was much clackety involved in programming the CNC.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The anal retention level is spectacular.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Autism

7 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 14

asshole.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Mech keyboard enthusiasts are the vegans of tech hobbyists.

7 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

LOL +1 I didn't see your comment and made the same observation.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mech keyboard enthusiasts are the vegans of the computer world. They'll tell you every time they open their mouths. Double Cherry Red MX FUX

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It makes those loud clackety noises whenever you touch it

7 years ago | Likes 195 Dislikes 5

I don't see how that answers his question...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mechanical keyboard enthusiasts get raging boners from their keyboard sounds based on my experience with them

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah, now if only I could get my hands on the one from warehouse 13, oh boy.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They'd really like my IBM Model M then, makes "mechanical" keyboards sound like McDonald's toys

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love this comment. A friend has a mechanical keyboard and we hear him type constantly when he's in Discord.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

That's when you tell him to use push to talk or fix his mic sensitivity

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Disagree. I love that sound and cant wait to join the noise when my current non-mechanical keyboard dies.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love my mechanical keyboard but I wish I had mx blues because they’re loud and they annoy people more than the browns

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Love my blues, real satisfying when you're typing and someone says "wtf was that?"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ultimate goal is to cut my case on the CNC, but I'd be a fool to expect those tolerances with no experience.

7 years ago | Likes 170 Dislikes 54

Pshh it's not a real mehanical keyboard unless it's a buckling-spring IBM Model M

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's fair... cut your... uh.... end mills... on something low-risk to start off. Mmmhmmm mmmhmmm. Well done.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What the fuck does this Post have to do with keyboards.

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Are you practicing the cut? Or testing the material? Or figuring out the closest tolerance your CNC machine will do? Or all?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Everything but testing the material. I would never use that for a keyboard.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm guessing all, hence the broken end mills

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don't forget patience. Definitely testing my patience.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What's the tensile strength of your patience after this project? :P

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So it isn't related at all, and you just chose to include irrelevant information in the title. Weirdo.

7 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 44

Build keyboard = build case = use cnc machine But you comment on a video a to be mean to someone? Weirdo.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 11

It makes sense because the skills are similar. CAD Designing parts for medium size products, CNC machining, possibly 3D printing. Same tools

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 10

As a CAD guy: I use a $15 keyboard from a trash bin. A mechanical keyboard would get you shot between the clacking and existential despair.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Nothing about said silverware drawer implies a mechanical keyboard enthusiast made it. Ergo, the premise is flawed / illogical. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

mech keyboard people do shit like make a custom plate and handwire 61 switches to an Arduino because they want a key shifted .5U to the left

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

Op is homesoxual?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ONISHINOBI HAS SPOKEN. Ten lashings for your irrelevant information @OP

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Irrelevant. The post suggested it was something you would get specifically if a mech. keyboard enthusiast designed a silverware drawer. 1/?

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/73025574ae5ec6906e149baff658fa53 is my goal but I need a few more practice projects.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 17

What physical size are you aiming for?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That would drive me up the wall with all the buttons in the wrong places... But then i like my ANSI 104 key layouts to much to go smaller

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was thinking about musical keyboards until i saw this

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless you're doing insane stuff shit aint hard to hit. I haven't worked as a machinist in years but I could still bullseye +/- .001 by hand

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But was your first experience walking into a room alone w/ a CNC knowing nothing but what you could find on Google? That's where I started.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

To a certain extent yeah. I was trained in cad design and was told "here are the machine offests, make this and dont break anything"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Machinist's handbook is a life saver btw

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
