Robotic firefighter can withstand explosions while putting out fires

Queue the theme song from " The Thunderbirds" and the truck they came out of should have been painted like a pod from Thunderbird 2.

Slap a few auto cannons on there and we've got the T-1! Firefighters are obsolete, indeed!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*small enough explosions

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do y'all mind if we set y'all's oil refinery on fire so we can test our new robots?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Autobots, roll out

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Where is this amazingly elaborate fire training ground?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

eh look more like drones than robots...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe I'm putting meaning where there is none, but the title makes it seem like the subtext is, "...Unlike those shitty human firefighters"

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This fucking gif doesn't show a single WALL-E eating an explosion. I feel ripped off..

Perhaps in the future, simple people will understand that remotely-operated things aren't robots if there's a human operating them.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They look like some equipment from Thunderbirds

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WALL•E could write his name in the snow.

7 years ago | Likes 542 Dislikes 3

My cat's name is Wall-E. Just fyi.

I was thinking Tiny Tank

They took my Job

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is absolutely the best idea ever. Fire is no joke.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They took our JOBS

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

California must be loving this.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It won't help. We need climate un-change. Barring that a fleet of 747s capable of dropping so much fire retardant massive fires killed early

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so they can respond to explosions...at what point do they get tested by explosions? this is pure dumb person bait.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They were pre-tested in 6 seasons of Batlle Bots, didn't you catch the reruns?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it possible to buy one of these things without the fire hose on it. I feel like it would be amazing for a drone tank

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And Mom always said playing with my remote controlled cars would never help me in life!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty amazing robots can pull hose like that...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can it rake the forest floor?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With a special attachment sold separately from TrumpCo, it puts a ratty blonde wig on over the sprayer and sticks a rake in its ass.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It could be done. Not with that model of unit, but it could be done.

Add a neural net to teach it how to DISTINGUISH DISTINGUISH DISTINGUISH the obstacles from the flames.

Ahhhhhhhh! So close to using apostrophes correctly in that one :\

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

These look like they're intended for industrial firefighting. I don't see them finding trapped victims in a house and pulling them out.

7 years ago | Likes 181 Dislikes 1

Took mir Jurb!

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Next up robocop.. oh wait.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which they semi already did by pushing fire resistant building materials, now they justify their large departments by running medical aids

7 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

It said potentially explosive heavy industry. There isnt many fire resistant oil leaks lol.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We're now finding that a lot of those fire resistant materials are making for hotter more toxic fires when they do burn.

7 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

May I trouble you for the Source please?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Seems like something that should have been invented a long time ago

7 years ago | Likes 1412 Dislikes 5

We've been too busy teaching them to kill and jump off buildings

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think even 15 years ago the motors and batteries could handle the power needed to move hoses full of water.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

35 years ago these were kids' toys. I guess it took battery and overall reliability improvements https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Trak

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was developed by a Heavy Industries, so it was probably a prototype for an RC tank

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still glad it’s here now tho.

7 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 0

Too bad it still wont be implemented. Bc “ money”

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could really use those robots in California

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would be cool if those robots were stationed every 10 blocks.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fire service is stubborn and likes to shoot itself in the foot because "Tradition". At least, that's how it is in my home state in Aus.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You'd think, but these sorts of things are much harder to predict than you might imagine.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(see also Screens that don't have shitty backlights. Those had to wait for the invention of blue LEDs. Before that, we were stuck on CCFLs)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blue LEDs and the subsequent creation of white LEDs using that technology wouldn't happen until the mid 00s.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better late than very late

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe these were i wanna say iv seen old pics of something similar

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

did u exist on that time ?????

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were. Just haven't seen wide adoption till recently. First saw something on them back in like. 2010

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They did, but it kept getting wet.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People and their ideas are amazing. I’m just super pumped of figuring out to fold my toilet paper in half.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought i was the only one who learned to do this as an adult! You are gonna save so much money on tp now! Haha

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They took mah Job!

7 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 3

Everything needs an operator.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Except a swarm. You're right in this case..

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A swarm... Mecha-Bukake visions...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

if your job is hosing down oil refineries you should be glad you lost it lol

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

No. I am not glad. Not glad at all. And yoy should be ashamed. Showing your face like that. Shame. Shame on you and your whole clan.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True but unfortunately destruction is our main game.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 9

Was gonna reply to the main comment about tech, but then saw yours and it's so true, I'm just so disappointed in us.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

False. Profit is our main game. Its just that there's a lot of profit to be made in destruction.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

R&D costs money. Has to be a reason and a way to profit. War checks both those boxes. At least we get trickle down.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They've certainly been plausible for some time, but cost and necessity have likely prevented their development till now.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's actually a very simple design, basic tank chassis with a water cannon mounted on a turret with a camera. Not hard, just costly.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably more of a problem with reliability than cost. Simple robots capable have been around since WW2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

shit man firefighters are going to just be fat dudes controling robots soon

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Their bodies take huge toll from that work. So it sounds preferable.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The irony that that is the actually goal of technology. Make things easier so we don't have to work as hard.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

And put our lives on the line as much

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Will never be used, its political suicide to talk about firing fire fighters, and this would down size a fire dept for sure.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Have the firefighters control them when they're needed, just a retraining.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Much of what urban firefighters do is EMT work. Rural FF go over rough terrain. These do both poorly.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of these technology type things seem to fall into that category, but really, they're meant to augment capabilities, not replace.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As others have said in this thread - high-risk locations where you can't put FFs in close for risk of explosion/chemicals/etc.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think these are geared more toward specialized/industrial fire departments; refineries, chemical plants, ports, etc.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are not for normal fire departments. These are for airports and factories where a fire could produce a large explosion.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

BINGO! The times you wouldn't have sent a firefighter closer to begin with = this little robutts jerb.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don’t seem capable of search and rescue so are probably for specific scenarios. They definitely won’t replace people as they are now.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's where you r wrong, kiddo. Firefighting is a seriously dangerous job, anything saving lifes will be implemented.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But not all at once.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still need people (for now) to drive the trucks there, definitely need people to hook it all up there, work it, and clean up after.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yes but not 4 people per engine and 4+ engines, and when they make six figures that's a lot of saving and cutting

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

/2 nobody is going to send a person into a burning explosives plant especially if it's already evacuated, or giant fuel tanks w/no people.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

BS it's for jobs firefighters don't have NOW, so, idk what high horse you're up on Vanilla Sky Knight: if a C4 plant=aflame, robutts jerb./1

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

C4 doesnt explode when on fire. FDs dont run on many fires, roughly 6% of their calls annually. But hey keep bringing pumps for sick people.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes I know about detonation to deflagration & how you can use C4 as a cooking fuel & intiation energies, but rather than write nitroglycerin

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

/3 filled to the brim with volatile precursors. Furthermore any facility containing extensive volatiles is a good candidate for Fire Robutt.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm constrained by how many letter I use, I took the easy route & put down C4. HOWEVER you ARE wrong in a sense as any C4 plant will be /2
