This is a typical day. The mindless task of telling people to constantly be quiet. Trust me, I hate doing it and I should not have to treat grown adults like children by reminding them that it is rude. Not only is it rude but it could land you in jail for a minimum of ten days or more if it continues. I once had someone get over 100 days because he just did not know when to stop.

Another minor thing that can escalate. Males are required to tuck shirts into their pants and some judges make a very big deal about it. Sometimes people just don't get it. This person in general was heard by the judge and ordered into custody. He fought, was tazered, and went to jail.

This is coming from working the metal detectors. I know that there are some jurisdictions that do allow you to bring your cellphone into the courthouse but the one I was at did not. It is a not just a safety issue but also very distracting. We did not even let lawyers or other officers bring them in.

This is a question I heard all too often. I know a lot of first timers get nervous when going to court and a lot of frequenters want to know what the judge will do. I can never explain exactly what will happen and I never know what the judge will do. There have been times where I was surprised what the judges did. If you have a lawyer they can advise you further.

This could be asked out of desperation or just ignorance but either way I do not have the power to release you.

This is probably one of the more common ways that people try to stay out of jail. They think the judge will have more sympathy for them if they bring their children with them to court. This does not work. You go to jail and your children are taken into the custody of Social Services if no one is available to take them. I have even seen where children have been: taken away from their mothers, sent into foster care, and never returned to their mothers for their entire minority. This is a very sad thing to do and crushed me every time I had to do it.

This is a very common thing that happens when someone does not want to come to court. This involves shutting down several city blocks and at least 4 hours of bomb sniffing dogs checking everything. We caught everyone who ever did this.

This is a common question I got along with bomb threat questions. I know there are a lot of crazy people out there that have nothing to lose and anything could set them off. I can only speak for myself but as I would stand in the courtroom I would try to keep thinking about what I would do if these types of situations ever did happen for real. It is tough to stay vigilant and very easy to succumb to complacency.

You would think murder would be on the top of the list and yes it can be, sometimes. But I think the worst things I have ever seen are those of emaciated children that were later murdered and/or sexually abused. It takes everything inside yourself not to want to take justice into your own hands but not everyone is guilty and you have to treat everyone the same.

Duties are not just to stand, look pretty and hassle people about their clothing and decibels. We also may be called out for prisoner transports, serve civil papers, work in the jail, work on the road. Everything you can do in law enforcement I have done at some time.

Depending on which court you work you may have a different judge everyday but sometimes the judge you guard is the same. Over time you develop a working relationship with your judge, getting to know the way they want things done and handled. I in no way ever put myself in any situation where I would ever ask the judge for any favors. I not only could have lost my job but could also be sued for it.

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this. I did not see anything about bailiffs so I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and share my experiences. Feel free to ask any questions and if i get a lot I will most likely have to do another one of these. Stay out of trouble. :-D

*Front Page Edit* WOW! I kind of had a feeling I would make front page but look at all that green! THANK YOU! Anyway, I just finished reading all the comments and am currently working on another since there has been so much arguing about the dress code.

*EDIT* Part 2 http://imgur.com/gallery/91zbD

Women's shirts are usually more fitted, maybe that's why, or maybe this is just a very archaic rule.

I'm sorry but three duis should be more than 1 year I jail..

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Local courts don't let you come in for any kind of service in shorts.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It should be said you're not going to go to jail because of your shirt. You'd have to be an asshole, and keep being one despite warnings.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I honestly did think you just stand there and whatnot. I guess this post has served a purpose.

My lawyer told me a story of a client he had once that showed up to court in a "fuck the police" t shirt.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Emaciated, abused children." Good answer.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know if I could do this job, seeing people on the worst days of their lives, day after day. Kudos to you, sir.

11 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Sounds very challenging

*advice

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To be fair, if all you did was stand there all day, I'd consider it a hard job. I'd run out of things to daydream about by like, day 3

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can make you feel better about the children being taken away if you want to hear. PM me.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As shitty as our foster care system is, I would be afraid that the lady with the DUIs would get her kids killed.

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

#6: Showing the court the young lives that you directly endanger with your behavior? *sigh*

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Showing your kids how shitty you can be as well.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hey, people who use their children as pawns to avoid the legal consequences of their fuck-ups: you're a selfish asshole!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why do people have to dress up for court? I definitely would, to try and make a good impression and be respectful, but this is America...

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Thanks for sharing. People just do not know enough to shut up and realize their own powerlessness in that situation.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is the shirt rule about. Seems silly and arbitrary to me. What does it achieve to put someone in jail over that?

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Dude, you're not being put in jail because of it. You'd have to be a total jerk with everyone involved.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Tuck in your shirt" is arbitrary and is condescending. Enforcing it is a jerk move. Why do it?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

In other words it's saying "I can fuck with you and I will." Not a good way to earn respect.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That mom shouldn't have her kids anyway. Fucking third dui. That's someone who's unfit to parent.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It makes my heart happy when people post these stories truthfully. It's truly a great insights to a life different than your own. Thanks OP!

Cool. Bailiffs are bad ass (attorney here). What's the most annoying thing that we do?

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

As a law student, I'd like to know what it is so I never do it.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a prosecutor. I'm in the courtroom all day. I enjoy laughing about defense attorneys, after a case, with the bailiffs.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yell "Objection!"?

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Have you ever been to Court?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not like in the movies.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As another lawyer, I'd also be interested in helpful things we do.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I don't get why people don't just do what they're asked or told to do. I'm a person that has problems with authority figures but you have to

11 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 8

I'd agree with this most of the time, but probably not if i thought the police/legal system were closing ranks.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

do what you're told sometimes. That doesn't stop after you turn 18.

11 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

I've been in a court twice. I was surprised at how many people didn't even know to dress nicely. Like, do you really just not even care?

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Im the opposite feeling, i'm amazed that law is somehow hindered by untucked shirts. does it pose a safety risk?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Listening to too much Rage Against The Machine.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Never liked that band. But I've been stopped randomly a few times and the only trouble I had is when I talked shit for being stopped.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yeah, indeed!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Go to a court room one day. I had to sit in on a court room once for a class. It was painful to watch what they had to deal with.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

You don't even have to go into a court room. What people wear to court sometimes is ridiculous.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As a future public defender, what clients wear is both one of the biggest problems, and the least of my worries about their behavior.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work in the courts and the way some people dress. I sit there in my clothes and I both envy and loathe them.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

good post. 10days minimum in jail for 'not being quiet' will never be justified IMO, I don't care if it's a court room

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 13

I agree to some extent, but what do you suggest then when a guy just goes yelling and ranting and won't stop?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

mmmmm, i know exactly where you're coming from but there has to be a compromise somewhere, im sorry. just how i feel

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

then remove him from the court room

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

Then how do you finish the trial? If the accused is gone, you can't keep going.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not a good idea. Not many people(jurors) actually want to be in court so all day you'd hear people talking waiting to be kicked out.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They warn you, I guess, before they throw you in jail, so if you keep talking, it's your own damn fault. Don't be an idiot in court.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

i dont think its as black and white as that tho, is it? I can imagine scenarios where innocent people panic-talk, blind rage at false....

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

accusations and your life is on the line. i imagine it could be easy to fall into a rant in some cirumstances, don't you?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh, if a security guard comes up to you 5 times, saying you'll be in jail if you keep talking, would you still panick-talk?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i like to think id have the restraint, but if y was trying to convince a court x raped y when x didnt, Id understand x if x goes ballistic

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but if x is smart, he'd know that they would believe him less if he'd go ballistic, right?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ok, this is just how i feel and we can always just disagree. i just dont think jail for talking out of turn will ever be right, it's just me

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tuck in your shirt? Seriously? Is the judge really that bad that his decision of guilty/innocent will be swayed by the clothes I wear?

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 11

The way the defendant looks and acts can make a difference, yeah.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You have to remember that despite what you might see on Judge Judy, courts are still very formal and structured. Judges are busy people,(1)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

And would be more than happy to push back your case if they don't get their way in their courtroom. Talking as a son of a lawyer.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The Judge doesn't have that kind of authority to declare someone innocent or guilty that goes to the Jury of twelve. He can do sentencing.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually he can overturn a guilty verdict - http://www.minicklaw.com/can-a-judge-overturn-a-jurys-guilty-verdict/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Jury decides but if he believes the Jury is not in the best in it's thought process he can overturn it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no but it shows respect and decorum

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

I have no respect for any court that'd sentence someone for weed.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

But does it really though?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

If you can't follow an instruction like "tuck in your shirt", why should I trust you can follow instructions like "don't drink and drive"?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Its just a weird instruction to give.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

"Respect the court." "No." Jail time. Yeah... Yeah don't see any overinflated sense of importance there at all.

They warn you, I guess, before they throw you in jail, so if you keep talking, it's your own damn fault. Don't be an idiot in court.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

If they are no consequence to being rude and crazy, it would be a complete zoo all the time. Do you just let the guy rant for 2 hours?

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

That's disruption of. If what you're doing hinders the ability of the court to proceed, fine. If your shirt's untucked? Fuck that.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

The dude told the Bailiff to fuck off, and then things escalated. That's not acceptable behaviour in Court.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

If we were wasting court time on whether or not I was considered "presentable" to His Fucking Majesty I'd tell him to fuck off too.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I don't know if you CAN overinflate in the importance of the courts. They're the only thing that keep us from either anarchy or martial law.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

The court is there to render a decision based on law, not to have its dick sucked and told how pretty and special it is.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It's meant to interpret the law not go directly by the books. That's the Police's/ executive branches job.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Courts keep us from martial law in what way?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Courts as a body are a way to mediate conflicts and go back to Royal courts and counts using their judgement to negotiate conflicts.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who throws out evidence that police collect in violation of the 4th Amendment?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you're saying that police power is checked by the court system? THAT is an interesting point.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In addition they interpret the laws that are drafted by legislatures and enforced by an executive branch. Making a system of balances.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the courts disappeared tomorrow, martial law would have to be declared in order to prevent anarchy.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's not actually any more specific than the first time you said it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uh... this is the first time I said it?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rule 1 of dealing with Law Enforcement: Be polite and helpful. The less hassel you are the more likely they will be lenient with you.

11 years ago | Likes 200 Dislikes 9

I'd call that Rule 1 plus the Twit's Corollary. Why not be polite and helpful because they have a tough job and it's the nice thing to do?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Plus, if they have a mind to, they can really ruin your day.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And if you're black, they'll be slightly less likely to pull out their gun and shoot you eight times for 'attacking them'.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I'll be polite and helpful to law enforcement the first time they're polite and helpful to me. I'm only 30, there's still time.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

A lot of them will be, if you are to them. If you aren't, they likely won't be. Take it into your own hands mate.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They said the same thing about you.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. When I was a patrol officer and I stopped someone, if they started with "Good morning/aft/evening" I never ticketed them. Ever.

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

On more than one occasion a friend and I have been pulled over by the police. When asked my name I always offered my drivers license. 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

When asked to get out the car I would leave my keys on the car so I couldn't run. Never got searched, always was carrying dope.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I wish, I was polite and got ticketed 2 months' savings anyway. :(

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No doubt. There are cops who'll ticket anyone. My line in the sand was being polite. But some guys will ticket their own mother.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

A while ago there was a guy arrested for hiking with a loaded AR. When the police asked why he had it, his answer was "because I can" 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

and then proceeded to be rude and short with the police. Fox news was outraged that he got arrested. It was absolutely ridiculous seeing2/3

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

peoples' reactions.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Technically he was correct though.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The best kind of correct.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

yeah. but if you act blatantly rude to a cop while holding a weapon, their assumption really should be that you are dangerous.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

"Males are required to tuck shirts into their pants and some make a very big deal about it" The fuck? What if I show up in a skirt or dress?

11 years ago | Likes 151 Dislikes 19

I'd gladly take a couple of days in jail over giving some stuck up judge the satisfaction of watching me tuck my shirt in on his command

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

make sure to not cause any problems, or your new friend "Big Joe" has some fun later..

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

If the dude who didn't tuck in his shirt was any indication, you'll be ordered into custody

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Mom always told me to dress like a lawyer in the court. I also live in Memphis. There's not really a dress code. People wear their pjs

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Your mom had low expectations of you.*My little ericagxxx is going to be spending a lot of time defending himself in court as he gets older*

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was more situational? Like oh, you got a speeding ticket, dress nice.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, I'm a girl hence the "a" in my name

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"well we were gonna look at the evidence sir to decide your fate, but more importantly- your shirt's untucked and this displeases me!"

11 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 8

That's why you need to come in a dress. All he can tell you then is that your shoes don't go well with your stockings.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

But what if your lawyer is wearing the same dress? It'd be so embarrassing!

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well, we'd have to coordinate before going to court. Wouldn't want to risk wearing the same high heels either.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Whether we like it or not the way we dress and the way we look affects how people perceive us, so something's got to give, I guess.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I'm so glad we don't have trial by jury...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, but a mandatory dress code? How about no?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Would you meet the President wearing beat up overalls and a snapback?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I don't care to meet the president at all, but yes, I would meet him in overalls. What the hell is a snapback?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love when people throw that question at me. "Sure, I honestly don't give a fuck and if he's worth a shit, he won't either."

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Remember that Chris Rock video about how not to get shot by police? Remember when all it said was show respect and do as you are told? 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 7

2/2 If you are in front of a judge and they are deciding your fate, trying to look decent is a small think to ask in return.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 9

And some people's concept of 'decent' is a deplorable mess. Subjectivity does not belong in a Judge.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats still bullshit though. Someone's fate is more important than a fuckin dress code. It seems really petty.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Not if the judge does their job right and decides on EVIDENCE and not fucking FIRST IMPRESSIONS like a 14 year old teen choosing her partner

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Seems to me that the way a person presents themselves to a stranger is pretty indicative of their outward impression of society as a whole.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It's also a petty and pointless consideration for a judge to make. A judge who takes it into account is a poor judge

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Judges are allowed to take character into consideration. Being too poor to afford decent clothing is one thing, dressing like a slob 1/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

2/ demonstrates to the judge that you have no respect for the law. Now, I agree that a judge shouldn't take fashion into consideration 2/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

dress =/= character. Any arsehole can wear a suit

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Again, what if I show up in a dress?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Is it a nice dress?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Of course!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As stated, all I said was look nice and be respectful. It isn't a fashion show. Show the court you are serious about your defense.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

So you're saying because a person dresses differently from the norm they aren't serious about their own defense?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I agree. Stupid rule. You should be able to wear what the fuck you want.

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 7

Everybody says that but it's not true. Everybody judges.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Exactly, Lady Justice is blindfolded for a reason!

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Its a court room for Christ sake. If everyone dresses their best the Jury would be less biased towards the poorer/richer party.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

Because rich people's suits look the same as cheap suits.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

rofl based on what logic? If you're poor you probably have more important shit to spend your money on than a suit rental for a day in court.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

If you have a series of people wearing different clothes people are going to perceive them you guessed it, differently.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't know if you missed my point or decided it was irrelevant: Unless the court is providing this uniformity, money is an obstacle to it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

uniformity levels the playing field especially in a Court Room where theyre's little room for bias.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fucking fascists ...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Actually very common to have transgenders and cross dressers. Most of them were in court for prostitution charges.

11 years ago | Likes 121 Dislikes 6

Is there genuinely something wrong with leaving their cellphones with you? That's a hell of a lot of trust buddy

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. Or drugs. Usually both.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm serious here. How can I let the judge know I don't have any respect for him without getting thrown in jail?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Tell him when he's off duty I guess. Unless he summons some sort of impromptu court, then you fucked.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"How can I poke this lion with a sharp stick and not get eaten." Don't poke the lion, dummy. Only idiots fark with judges.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh... Well, I'm not too worried about that happening anytime soon.

11 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

Because you don't wear skirts or dresses, or because you're really good at being a sneaky prostitute?

I don't think I would be good at being any kind of prostitute...

hate to be THAT person, but... transgender is not a noun. a better way to phrase it is transgender people/folks/women/men/etc. thanks

Came here to say this, will try and help get you out of downvote hell...

It's more like transgender is not a verb, you do not have transgender done to you, like people are not straighted, shorted or blacked.

The usage as a descriptive noun is fine, but saying, "a transgender" seems dehumanising, in the same way as, "a black walked in" would be.

yes, that is my main point

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Yeah, your phrasing was just a bit off, transgender can be ok as a noun, like blue or glass. It's all contextual.

Colloquial terminology

"The Transgender Transgender Transgendered down the street Transgenderly"

Transgender transgenders transgender transgenders transgender transgender transgender transgenders.

Was this part "hate to be THAT person, but... " really necessary? Your point would have come across a lot better without it

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 10

I think it is necessary. A lot of people are assholes about correcting others. I appreciate acknowledgement that it can be annoying.

This isn't a bad comment. People are idiots. Thanks for providing information without assuming anything about the original commenter.

Imgur loves to conflate being-asked-politely-to-use-correct-terminology with oppressed-freedom-of-speech-murrica-tumblrsuckslol.

Gay is not a noun either, yet it is commonly used as one, as are many other adjectives. Deal with it.

doesnt make it right

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 8

It's a legitimate construct of the English language. Did you write to Martin Scorsese to complain about naming a film The Departed?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

You don't understand how language works, do you?
