This is pretty much how every call starts. When people dial 911 they aren't listening to what we say. I ask the address and instead of giving it they say what the problem is, which I make them repeat after I finally get the address. This is the order of importance on information when you call 911: Exact location of where the emergency is, phone number we can call you back at in case we get disconnected, your name, and finally what is happening.

Bad Luck Brian. Nuff said.

The fire department here are the first responders. They are sent to so many unnecessary calls. I guess it's partly to pad their numbers or as some people call it: "Empire building". But really, EMD protocol requires them to go to many calls that they really have no business being at, but it all depends on how the person calling answers the questions we ask. Why this is a problem is because we have limited resources and units. If she said she also had difficulty breathing (because her nose is plugged), that would automatically require a medic respond. If a medic responds to a nose bleed, they are committed to that call. If a legitimate cardiac arrest comes in seconds after with CPR in progress, there very well might not be a medic available for that call.

911 is for life threatening emergencies. We let most things slide like minor car accidents, but if you're at home and need to call in a noise complaint, there is NO excuse to dial 911. Do yourself a favor and look up the phone numbers of your local police department where you live, where you work, and where you spend most of your time. Also put this phone number in your phone: 1-800-222-1222. It's poison control and it's free.

Every cell phone can dial 911, even if you're out of minutes or there is no phone number attached to it. But that's in case you have a life threatening emergency. We're not here to schedule your medicine deliveries.

We have a lot of down time many nights. We literally sit around and wait for bad things to happen to people. We are lucky enough to have a television (and internet access on the computers) but at 3:30 in the morning there's only SO much Law and Order one can watch before they start going insane. I spend a lot of time here making sure Freedom is protected because 'Murica never sleeps.

Every spring the river rises from the melting snow from the north. Every year there is at least one of the roads that floods, and the water is ALWAYS deeper than it looks. And we ALWAYS put road blocks up saying that there is flooding and not to go down. There's another route people can take that adds maybe 4 minutes to their commute. We can't completely block off the road because there are a few houses on it. Unless you want Beth to die of dysentery, don't ford that river.

It's the 30 second rule and never fails. Officer on scene requests an ambulance or tow truck. They wait X amount of time before having us call to see where they are. They ALWAYS seem to show up at X + 30 seconds, usually after we start dialing.

This was the first shooting call I took while I was still in training. I've taken NUMEROUS shooting calls since then, but this is the only one that has actually stuck with me, and this was over 7 years ago. Her screams when stepping out into the hallway will haunt me for quite some time.

This is a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation. Emergency knows no holiday. We take days off when we can, but SOMEONE has to be here on the weekends. Have I missed a number of important events? Absolutely. I work midnights and can generally adjust my sleep pattern. I can do things in the morning when I get out of work, or in the evening before work, but if something is scheduled between noon and 5pm, I just can't make it. The way our schedule works is that we work 5 on, 2 off, 4 on, 2 off. So every 13 weeks or so we get weekends off.

11th picture cat tax. I hope you enjoyed this posting and possibly learned something. Thanks for reading a few short stories!.

The majority of the time when I call the non-emergency number for a non-emergency, they direct me to call 911.

Well, you are late to the party, but it was a good read, so +1

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

In my city, we're SUPPOSED to call 911 for noise complaints and shit. It's dumb.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Every time I call non emergency I get transferred to 911 dispatch. How else will they dispatch services? At least I tried.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The two times ive called the non emergency number, in hindsight i should have dialed 911. :-/

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I double deer you!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

1) Mock emergency calls in schools instead of a cop trying to scare kids straight might be of greater use to society. Anyway, enjoy your

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

2) soon to be front paged post, presumably, as every time I've seen one of these it goes to the front page.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

P.S. Also enjoy all the "Is this you?" and "I know you're in dispatch but do you have a pair of handcuffs we can break in?" You'll hear.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

OP as a firefighter that gets dispatched to nosebleeds, they can be critical calls. Had a woman on blood thinners arrest from a nosebleed.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Blood thinners and bleeding disorders is one of the questions we ask. Her answer was no to both.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tell her to man up. Jk, thanks for what you do.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you, watching my dad have blood pour out of his nose and partially into his lungs was a treat.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dumb guy calls, dumb girl calls, people drive into water, BRAIN ON WALLS

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I was reading this to the tune of Jingle Bells....

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha. You da real MVP

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I upvoted for the Oregon Trail reference alone.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Uh, last time I called the local station with a noise complaint, they redirected the call to 911.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've been a 911 dispatch for many years now and I'm still waiting for the skinny, pretty employee like the one the OP has in the pics.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We have a couple at my agency. Avid runners/hikers tend to help stave off that dispatcher body lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lucky!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We work 12's, 4 days on 4 off. allows for down time to actually work out and have a life.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We were having a family gathering. 911 called us. One of the kids had dialed and called them a poopy head. No one fessed up.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those ones can be the funniest or the most annoying calls ever.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you ever think maybe some people are panicked when they call 911 so they may not realize they aren't communicating the appropriate info?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thank you for saying this. Definitely a tough job, but the callers are probably in a bad state. It's hard to think straight.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. We're trained to get the information out of them, but a lot of times we talk to people when they're at their worst. I take 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks for clearing that up :) .

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

nothing personally. But we also have habitual callers that still don't get it. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I call the first question is, "What is your emergency?" Because that is the obvious thing to ask first, not the caller's location.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's policy for our agency to ask location first. That actually makes more sense to me tho, incase the caller gets disconnected.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay, but who the Hell do I call at 2 AM when the police department won't answer the phone?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2/2 Last time I tried to call in a noise complaint, the PD phone number was just a robot telling me to call back during officer hours >.>

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Some small agencies aren't open 24/7 and after hours is handled by the country. Call during business hrs and ask your local agency.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Meant local county on mobile and can't change, sorry!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'd like to know that too. I think it all goes to the same place because our towns are broke so 911 dispatch does double duty.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What town? If I remember I can try and look up the routine dispatch number.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Former dispatcher here. The most stressful thing about the job is the interoffice politics, backstabbing, and all around pettiness.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

For real! It can be worse than high school some days.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That goes for most jobs where you work with other people.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Of course, but of all the jobs I've had (hotel, fast food, retail, IT), all that was comically higher at my dispatch job.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I second this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Called 911 for the first time Friday for hit and run. Had no clue the reason of the call was the least important part and started with that.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Police was there in the minute, but the guy already bailed after crashing his car on my lawn.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I mean its all important, probably more important than the name, but if we don't have an address, there's literally nothing we can do.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought they could track that from your number. I use a good old landline.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Landlines, yes but we still need to verify the address. Sometimes it's just wrong or the emergency isn't actually where they're calling from

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I called 911 yesterday for a broken down car instead of the non-emergency number because my county doesn't have the fucking number online.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have the non emergency numbers for my local fuzz posted. The only time 911 was called from my house, I had let a person use my phone 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

In every town I've lived in the police have said to use 911 regardless of if its an emergency.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The police don't answer the non-emergency number where I am. I have called it on 3 occasions over the years and it just rings.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Same here. If it's after hours, it rings twice, goes to voice mail...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The last city I lived in didn't even do that. It would ring probably indefinitely, but I gave up after about 30 minutes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good stuff. I mean there's a 99% chance it's the same person answering the 911 and routine calls, but it prioritizes the calls for us. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Although I've definitely received enough life threatening emergency calls on the routine line, so you really never know.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

that came to my door. She started getting agitated, and handed me the phone. I knew it was dispatch. She was schizophrenic, and took off.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Longtime lurker maybe I should share my dispatch stories.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Do it to it!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was thinking the same thing.. not sure if it would violate my work social media policy though..

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was told when I called the non-emergency number it goes to the same phone and not to bother and just call 911 even for noise complaints.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I work for county and were the central hub for dispatch and call taking, but admin and 911 have different policy. That's why it matters

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know why anyone would say that. 911 is for life threatening emergencies.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it was a police officer when I dialed the non-emergency number. He said both numbers go to the same line.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I called the non-emergency number for a noise complaint, she got really annoyed, told me to call 911, then hung up on me.

10 years ago | Likes 132 Dislikes 2

that is crazy to me, its the complete opposite here. generally we will take the noise complaint on 911, but give them the non-emergency 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, yaeh, OP thinks that their protocol's are every city/county/state/country's protocols. Law Enforcement Call? 911.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same thing. "911, what is your emergency?" "Well, someone broke into my garage some time within the last week..."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is because in a lot of places the police are dispatched through 911 regardless of incident, so if you need police at all you call 911.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good to know, thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This happened to me too! It was a weird thing to be yelled at about.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Same!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 number to call for future noise complaints or something of the like

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This happened to me, I summoned the cops, hung up the phone, and realized I was way more stoned than my neighbor was noisy...

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yes! I've done this several times. Where I live you HAVE to call 911 for any complaint- the local police numbers get mad if you call them

10 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

yeah, same here

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's because some places 911 goes directly to dispatch, whereas the "local" number goes to the equivalent to a secretary.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is random but in Boston 911 is also for non-emergencies. Like car alarms. I am totally serious.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'm not exactly sure how Boston or NYC works, but they are MUCH larger cities than where I work. Could be multiple dispatch centers. I dunno

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So was the shooting a suicide or an actual shooting?

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

I don't think she is allowed to say

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Homicide

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Does a suicide not count as an actual shooting?

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

It does but a suicide & home invasion would be handled differently, I would imagine. I wondered at the hallway to commit suicide. Odd.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm curious if it was home invasion or suicide as well. That's how my friend found her husband after he killed himself D;

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

That's horrible. Also is that a winking gasping face?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It was supposed to just be the D: sad face but that ; snuck in there.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That darn ; always trying to be a :

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Call it a tear in the eye and you get away with it

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Never met the person on the other end of the radio... but sometimes they sound hot and you can't help but wonder

10 years ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 9

I'd probably be embarrassed if I went down that mental path

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Dispatcher in photo is fire, not police. lol. The majority of our dispatchers are 300 lbs +. With the exception of 2. We have 7+- per shift

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm sure they're not.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Heh, most of our dispatchers are older here.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a dispatcher who is also a guy, can confirm: We're all smokin' hot. But that's just til they get the A/C fixed.

10 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

I'm sure being in distress makes them sound more comforting / hotter... but I agree?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of our officers messaged one of our dispatchers saying she sounded hot and he wanted pics.. She's actually a chubby butch lesbian!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well, I won't ruin the surprise for ya then!

10 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 1

Is that you in the photo OP?

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

OP's profile has a photo of a dude in it, so I don't think so.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, but she's easy on the eyes so I chose her over myself.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because that's a spitting image of my crazy ex-gf

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Spitting Eh, I take er

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This may seem like a crazy question, but how does one get into this line of work?

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I've been interested in doing it too

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fill out a job interest card with the city you want to work for (I'm currently in the process). It takes a couple months to get hired starts

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

with an applications, then computer test, oral board, background interview, command board, polygraph, background investigation, drug test...

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

psych eval, and then interview with chief of PD, every one is different though so some places might not have as many steps, some are more

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Came down to look before I asked. I'm qualified and apparently hate myself enough to want to really do this.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Call 911 and ask to apply.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Also commenting for interest.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Start looking at city/county websites. It's a long process but worth it. Good pay, benefits, fun stories. Best job I've ever had.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can tell you that our EMS dispatchers are all EMTs themselves that can't work the streets for one reason or another.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Through a phone line, budum tish.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had a coworker get the job because she knew the local cops really well. Maybe go to a local station and ask?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Experience helps, and applying to major cities help too. I was a central alarm operator for a few years before the first major city 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

hired me. Got all my training and certification there, and after a few years, jumped to a slightly smaller city with better benefits 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fellow 911 calltaker/EMDS dispatcher/LEA dispatcher here in Florida in a college town i can relate to every single one of these NIGHTSHIFT!

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

FL county dispatcher here. Can confirm, shit hits the fan quickly. But I'm day shift now, and I notice more foot pursuits.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeaaaa night shift. You on the clock right now? Our mid-sized city has a hospital, mental hospital, and university so things get interesting

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

lol i was, im back on shift now.1900-0700. and same here two major hospitals, a trauma center, University of Florida, 6 PD's 2 FD's lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The joys of night shift, chief among them being there's never any damn places to eat lunch open.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

6am shift isn't much better. Lunch at 10:30 in the morning. Nothing good is open yet.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you would think having a university in town would mean things would be open later, but nope. Everything closed by 10pm except JJ's.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes! This! And when you are able to get food, that's when all the officers start running traffic and everyone decides to call 911!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

and good luck trying to convince a fast food joint over the phone that you want them to make your food right now instead of in an hour

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same with ordering online. It's like they can't understand how someone wouldn't have an extra eight minutes to wait in the drive-through.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"911 whats the address of the emergency?" " man you don't need to ask me that shit, i know you see it on your screen, JUST SEND THEM!!!" 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 308 Dislikes 2

This is exactly why I'm getting a landline this week. My kids might not remember but if something happens they know the cops number

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

"Oh, I don't actually have an emergency..."

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

" i just want to make a noise complaint, my neighbors dog won't stop barking"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe you want to change the way you answer the phone...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

What about "I know you have an emergency, to help you better, please tell me your address."?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

2/2 location.....we are unable to just pull your location out of thin air

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I understand the reasons but if 90% of people don't answer your question, maybe you should revisit the questions you're asking.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you don't tell us where you are......outside of spending the next 10-20 mins getting your cell provider to give us your last known 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

well 1. its Agency policy to answer in that exact format 2. if you're in trouble, us knowing where you are is kind of the most important 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2/2 thing for us to get from you if you are in need of help.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's an app for that: http://www.nowforce.com/solution/features/

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

very nice, works very similar in the way E911 does when/if you register your cell\

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what about E911? I registered my address with my cel phone carrier.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Is it even available in all areas?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that works great, but unfortunately not everyone does this or even knows about it. :(

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

happens all the damned time, then they hang up, and you spend 10 mins just trying to find them because they called from a cell not a landline

10 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 0

Yes! Then you take the time to ping the cellphone and get customer info and if they are located, it's always something dumb. Waste o' time.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"I don't have an emergency but I have a question". Spend next 10 mins trying to explain you are not a police ofc or a lawyer

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't difficult to find a cell phone? Like you have to ask for permission from the carriers to be able to ping their location?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

E911 location can't be disabled. It's specifically for 911 to try to find your position. However, you need to stay on the line

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THIS is exactly right. we cant just ping a phone on our own if it isn't actively connected to us via 911. we have to get the provider to.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is good to know. I always assumed 911 could track any cell or landline and instantly see their location.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cellphone carriers are very willing to help. We have hotlines we can call to ping a cell and get customer info. They all have (1)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

different guidelines for what allows them to help us. I've never had a company not help me in the 6 years I've done this. It is time (2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

consuming so please just stay on the phone! It's so much easier! (3)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was surprised that 911 seems to not have caller ID, with that "number I can call you back" thing.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

They do, but if there's another, more stable number or something, you give them that. They need to be sure

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They definitely used to, at least in Canada. I called them as a kid because I didn't believe they existed. They called back, pre-call ID.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

We do have caller ID but we need to verify all our information just in case.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I thought this was at least one reason cell phones had GPS on them (since even some not-so-smart phones do).

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

It gives us an area to look but not an exact location.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is actually a function on phones called E911 that specifically reports GPS info to 911 dispatch.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I watched a report not that long ago about how the technology is severely outdated in many cases and it's close to impossible to find ppl.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and they will only do that after we fax a form to them requesting authorization to do so, and it has to be life/death situation

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

we can't get you back on the line, we have to contact your service provider and get them to ping your cells last known location.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yup, but 1. only allows us to ping your phone within a few hundred yards and ONLY IF you stay connected with us. if you hang up and 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. The flip side is when they don't know where they are when they call and spend the next 10 minutes trying to describe how they got there

10 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 0

I butt dialed 911 and they GPS tracked my cell phone. Auburndale FL. Not a city by any stretch of the imagination.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and generally when this happens there is literally a life and death scenario taking place. Vehicle roll over on some trail in the woods .

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I butt dialed 911 and they GPS tracked my cell phone. Auburndale FL. Not a city by any stretch of the imagination.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In finland we have app for it. http://www.digia.com/en/112suomi-app/

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

awesome shit!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always wondered, I hike a lot, and if I called you and told you my GPS coords, would you know what to do with them ?

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Firefighter here. We can in our trucks for my county, not sure about our police or medics. Not sure about your county either. Sorry?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It all depends on the 911 center. At mine, I can easily plug in your coordinates and get help out to you.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always figured I may end up walking a middle aged woman through going to Google Maps while I'm bleeding out. "No, Google with two O's!"

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

They can enter it into google maps if they have access to the internet, or their telephone system SHOULD be able to map the coordinates.

OP - Do you call 911 over drink drivers?

10 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 1

Here in California the road signs say to call 911 in case of a drunk driver.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YES! 100%

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep I've done this a few times. If I see someone all over the road that shits not safe to ignore.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about people who are road racing?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If its life or death emergency you call 911. If they're on a deserted hwy then no. Non-Emerg line. If they are in residential area...yes.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Every state is different, try to look up if your state has a separate number to call for that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I called one time for this and they forwarded me to the highway patrol, so yes it works

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Maybe my dispatcher wasn't very good at her job or maybe it's the rules of my area, but they had me call the nonemergency police line :/

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Here in NC the state highway patrol a separate number you can call to report that. If you call 911 they'll transfer you to that number.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah Drunk drivers are a dangerous enough situation.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Were you drink when you wrote that comment

10 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 8

No, got auto corrected.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In some countries they call it "drink driving" sounds weird though

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Not OP but also a dispatcher, yes! Drunk drivers can kill and injure!

10 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 2

Check if your state has 1-800-GRAB-DUI (Ohio does, and I've used it, very grateful for it)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I personally love calling 911 when i see someone i suspect of being a drunk driver.. and do it often.. because F THEM. thats why.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All drivers can kill and injure.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 15

Here we have some idiot attempting to defend the practice of drinking and driving. That's enough imgur for today.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It is completely unfathomable to me how someone can try to defend or justify this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please. Drunk drivers do it with much more frequency.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I'm sure that's whats reported on more frequently. I bet $1 statistics will show the majority of accidents happen during rush hour traffic.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Wrong question. The correct question is: who is more likely to be involved in a deadly collision? A drunk driver or a sober driver?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But are those deadly accidents or just bumping into someone?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

yes but those who are under the influence are at a higher risk AND breaking the law, so theres that.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

True. But also, statistics show that tired drivers are at a higher risk than drunk drivers. Should 911 be called on sleepy drivers?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

If they appear to be under the influence (erratic patterns noticed with classically drunk drivers) then yes! Call! (I have narcolepsy)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

(2) if I had a sleep attack and was driving (which to this day has no happened, I"m careful) I'd hope someone called on me.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

oh sheeeeet.. that brain one caught me off guard

10 years ago | Likes 1616 Dislikes 5

One of our worst was a prolonged resuscitation on a 90yo who left half his brain at home from a shotgun. They gave up after an hour.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

yeah... that would be terrible.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It made me cry a little bit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read it and spent a good 5-10 seconds trying to figure out the silly/funny ending that I was missing.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#9

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that one blew my mind.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 7

Too soon.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That was unexpected

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably a bad person since my reaction was to laugh.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Kind of changes things when you see the insides on the outside. Takes a few days to sink in.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

caught you off wall

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

(1)I work for a removal company and I went to a weird call once where in the hour I was there the police went from thinking it was a dual

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2)suicide, to a murder suicide, to a murder suicide but other way around, to back to a dual suicide and one of the people had been shot in

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(3)the head, and the smell of brains, dried blood and shit will never leave me. Nor will the husband's reaction.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(4) Lemme tell you, dear reader, if you're thinking of suicide your parents will cry real tears - no exception.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my aunt is in the RCMP, had to go to a house where a man tried to move a boulder with a series of car jacks... crushed to death

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

A girl I worked with in high school's father died after falling into an industrial word chipper. I thought it was a joke when I first heard.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

worst part was the wife had hen-pecked him to move it and it happened in front of her, and she had to call 911 while he slowly died

Yeah, stuff that doesn't seem normal later just feels like the only thing to do. You want to help, but school doesn't teach anything like it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's so weird. I'm picturing them walk up to you and hand you the bag like it's a broken laptop they're returning.

So Scrubs is accurate on that front? lol

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never watched the show (more a House fan), but if you mean food, toy cars, bottles, plastic toys, vacuum cleaners and so on, yeah... :p

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That sounds like how I'd handle something like that unless it was my kids. Then it'd take all my self control not to freak the guck out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now I'm morbidly curious as to whether it was murder or suicide, what with OP describing it as "a shooting"

10 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

Probably murder if their was more then one gunshot.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Yeah thats what i was wondering, like bf got home then killed himself, or he was already home and she didn't realise,or murder when got home

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Never going to get that answer I'm afraid but I can totally say it was in a hallway... most likely murder

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Found the murderer :P

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP replied and said it was homicide. Nice guess!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks I mean who commits suicide in a hallway? Like he forgot and was almost home and was like oh silly me *BANG* headshot

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks I mean who commits suicide in a hallway? Like he forgot and was almost home and was like oh silly me *BANG* headshot

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

homicide

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Ever find out if it was an intentional murder or robbery gone wrong?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nope. Can only guess gang related.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yikes. Thanks for the reply.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's somehow even worse than a suicide.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Much worse. Knowing that there is someone walking the streets who has no concern for the sanctity of life is frightening.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Most people are fine with killing as long as it's only "people that deserve it." It's just they differ on who those are.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yea sorry, but such as the life of a dispatcher, you never know what's on the other end of the phone when it rings.

10 years ago | Likes 367 Dislikes 2

God, that's terrible. I know I wouldn't be able to handle it; I'm glad there are people like you to do these things. Thank you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah i work in a call center, I know the dread of waiting for the next beep.. but your on a whole new level man

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

How do holiday shifts work? Do you draw straws or is it assigned by seniority?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you all get paid? Can't imagine the tradeoff is well worth it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Keep it up OP, that's an important job you're doing! Thanks for the post !

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is absolutely horrifying, it's something you know might happen, but never think to actually acknowledge it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gave me chills reading it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Having seen and hear a fair amount of horrible things before nothing usually gets to me. But this makes me sick just thinking about it..

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't recommend watching it, but there is a video of a guy driving and a bring getting launched through the windshield. You don't see 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anything but it killed his wife instantly.... That will also haunt me. Absolutely horrifying.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yet another underpaid job.. Thanks for doing it.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They makee like $20 an hour around here.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Realistically in my opinion, that's not enough. Unless its an hourly job where they get overtime up the whazoo.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(And yes I know you said per hour, but it doens't mean they're not salaried)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know about over time but a normal shift was 12 hours at $20 an hour. I was going to apply but I missed the test. :|

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would calling 911 be appropriate in the case of an erratic/dangerous driver? I was too far from home for my police number to be relevant.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Has a ton for erratic/dangerous drivers

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In CA there are signs at the freeway encouraging to report drunk driving. I highly doubt you can call anything else than 911 while driving.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Here in NC the state highway patrol a separate number you can call to report that. If you call 911 they'll transfer you to that number.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hadn't seen one of the emergency number signs in a while, and didn't want to try looking something up while driving.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good idea. If you suspect someone is driving while intoxicated/impaired, call 911. Better safe then sorry.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So did the guy shoot himself or was there an actual intruder with a gun in the house?

10 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 0

me too

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Yeah I want to know this too. Was it home hallway or apartment hallway...? That changes the possibilities.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Sorry, apartment building. He was shot. Probably gang related but who knows.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There are probably legal limitations on the amount of information about an incident that OP can make public.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but homicides tend to make the police blotter.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shot by someone, possibly waiting for him in apartment building hallway. Probably gang related but that's just a guess.

10 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 1

I needed to down vote bc it was horrifying but I up voted 2 other random things from your profile to make up for it. Sorry.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 7

Upvote, downvote, I didn't do this for the points, people keep asking for dispatcher stories. I'm just happy to oblige.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

You are nice
