Astana is a capital of Kazakhstan, and the name means "capital" in Kazakh. The capital was moved here from Almaty in 1997.The official reason for relocating to Astana – previously the provincial settlement of Tselinograd, with a crumbling Soviet housing stock – was Almaty’s location in an earthquake-prone region. But its close proximity to the Chinese border and Kazakhstan’s need to strengthen its hold on the north of the country with its large number of ethnic Russians made it logical from a strategic point of view.

Given the billions of barrels of oil and gas that have been discovered in the country, and its very low population of only 16 million, every Kazakhstani should be a millionaire by now. One look at Astana and you can see where much of the money has gone.

Astana’s new university. Opened in 2010, and named after Nazarbayev, it is a point of pride for many that foreign academics staff many of the departments. Indeed, education has become a legacy issue for the 75-year-old “father of the nation”. Nazarbayev has made it possible for school graduates to study overseas, all expenses paid, provided they return to Kazakhstan to work for at least five years after graduation.

So it's a Russian version of Dubai

All other countries are run by little girls.

So no one is going to mention that the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation looks an awful lot like one of the Ministry buildings from 1984?

What happens when we don't rely on oil anymore and the value drops, does the Middle East implode?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Middle East using their riches to invest heavily in many different sectors. They're very aware they cant rely on oil alone forever.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They use the oil wealth to buy the West.

The 2nd image is actually from one of the 2 Gulags in Kazakhstan, called Alzhir, especially made for wives and children of Soviet traitors.

I'm glad they're promoting education, hopefully without limits on who can study?

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

Some of their students study are studying at my school, men and women both.

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

But not the Jews

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I hope there are *some* limitations. Goats are cute and certainly smart but they need a hell of a lot of tutoring in calculus.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i don't think there's many "minorities" there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

lol...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They meant women

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The only thing I know about Kazakhstan is critiquing the govt. Is actually illegal. So if you're a tourist you can actually go to jail

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rogue question mark?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Who can know, maybe decepticon?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks more like a tourist destination than anything resembling a regular city that we know.

8 years ago | Likes 230 Dislikes 1

Maybe they are planning ahead for the time when the oil will stop flowing?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That's the case in many cities now though. I wouldn't want to live in Amsterdam but the tourist parts are kind of neat

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

As a Dutch national i feel exactly the opposite, the touristy parts are utterly ruined and that rot is spreading...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why? I lived there, It's amazing. Just avoid the very centre with weed and hookers

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's just not a healthy city. It's not a bad city for everyone, but not a city you'd raise a family in

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's crazy, The quality of life there is amazing

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You say this based on what exactly? Seeing as my brother and sister both plan on doing exactly that and i went to school there i wonder?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

why is that such a bad thing? its the capital city after all.

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 16

I don't recall him saying it was a bad thing.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

in that case let me rephrase my question. why is that such a good thing? its the capital city after all.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I think he was merely saying how pristine the city was that it almost looked fake. He sounded impressed to me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
