While waiting for the car in front of me to make the turn, i was getting a bit impatient. I just looked up to my rear view mirror and all of a sudden i saw Semi and Smoke. I had to GTFO then. Was still expecting the semi to clip me, but somehow he threaded the needle.

Also, as people would ask, Audio Book is Brandon Sanderson's The Bands of Mourning. Book 6 is the Mistborn series. Love it!

This is what happens when you were taught to use your mirrors at all times and the critical importance of maintaining situational awareness. Not only is OP a good driver, but Kudos to whoever taught them in the first place. Well done

Well fuck

Great awareness!

All great drivers have that mirror awareness. You see something, you get out the fuckin way

Nice work!

No doubt. Awareness for the win.

I hope the semi driver was wearing his brown pants

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

impressive maneuver OP!

Nice awareness. Good thing you had room to move. I finished the Mistborn series books on tape a little while ago... ;-)

Rust and Ruin, that was close! Journey before destination, but ideally not scudding FINAL destination.

Hell, I’d be pissed all that gravel he threw up on the side of my car.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd take the gravel, considering the alternative

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you see if he was eventually able to stop before something really bad happened at the next intersection?

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Doesn't even look like you can make a left turn there or is this not how continuous lines work over there?

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Erm.. you can't park there.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

F’ing A friend. Glad you’re okay.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Did he get on the radio and thank you for moving out of the way and saving someone's life - maybe his?

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

would they even be able to tell if he did? do they have a CB installed in their vehicle? just looks like a regular pickup truck to me

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been there myself, although not with a Semi. Just a big van.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great awareness and glad you are safe, but… shouldn‘t the truck driver be blaring the horn in this case?

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As well as self
And while OP can be proud to have had a good reaction to gtfo, I would have gone way farther down that right roads, il the brakes are already off of that lorry, nobody knows how good of a driver is aboard and manage the direction of that truck.
Good self awareness, well done OP

1.25x speed on an audiobook? what's the hurry? it's only like 60 hours long (for the whole series)

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Was heading up the freeway in the left lane. There was a car from the other side sitting in the "emergency vehicle only" crossover connector. This lobotomized moron pulls out into our traffic, in the left lane, going about 25 MPH, and barely tried to speed up. It's a miracle he didn't cause a ten car pile up.

The audiobook sounds like lonely AI bots trying to communicate

1 week ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Graphic audio actually has a full cast of readers, its pretty cool. I wish they'd do wheel of time.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you love Brandon Sandersson and the Mistborn series ... you should probably listen the official audiobook version with Krame and Kate.

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I listen to this audio book before and it sounds sped up to me, just the book not the whole video.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I listen at 1.25x speed. My mind wanders too much when it is slower speeds.

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Apparently that's not a very safe intersection (crosses on the right side).

There's also no excuse to have smoked all your brakes in a semi like that in what doesn't appear to be particularly mountainous terrain. Either incredibly poor and untrained driving and/or not doing the inspections and service required by law.

1 week ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 3

Empty double drop on a hood? I'm going with not paying any amount of attention, so poor driving. You have to seriously be cookin along to need to smoke brakes on an empty.

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not to mention, it looks like an empty trailer so it was stopping with the least amount of weight possible. Dude totally wasn't paying attention and had a shitty rig.

1 week ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Yeah reminds me of a clip that went the rounds of a dump truck that'd had a break failure and narrowly missed a schoolbus or some shit. People praised the drivers skill but then more clips arose and locals spoke out how it was a regular issue because the dumb fuck never fixed his fucking brakes and was putting everyone at risk

1 week ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Holy...Crap. That would have been 100% fatal and the truck wouldn't have even slowed down.

1 week ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Going by the amount of smoke coming off the wheels, its possible the brakes had been applied for too long and had overheated. The metal expands and suddenly you don't get any friction at all. Happens a lot here in Australia, where on long stretches of downhill on highways, they instruct to use lower gears so it slows you down, and they have crash beds full of stones as a last ditch method to slow down in a controlled way

1 week ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Stateside here has that also, California for one. Hopefully your neck of the woods doesn’t have folks using runaway truck ramps as picnic areas. Heh

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, there was a brake issue. But being that truck was empty, if it was not a sudden mechanical failure, they should not have a CDL

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s not that the metal expands, it’s that the hydraulic fluid boils and you suddenly go from high pressure to no pressure.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

There is no hydraulic fluid to boil in a pneumatic air brake system. It uses air. So yes, it is the expansion of heated metal, you're incorrect with your correction.

Lucky it was just a semi and not a fully erect truck.

Paying attention pays you back.

Also, everyone should have a dashcam with a front and rear view camera. If something does happen, the other party can't try to weasel out of it. Video tells the story. A decent one will run you $100-$150, but that's instantly paid for when you don't have to shell out your deductible.

Head on a swivel. You never go on the road you don't have your head on a swivel

1 week ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Love it!

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If/when I have to brake really hard, I look behind me 70% and in front of me 30%. There's been a few time I had to do the same thing, get my butt off the road because the guy behind me wasn't watching. I'm glad nobody here got hurt.

This

1 week ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

And do not tailgate, leave some breathing room. You don't always know what's going on in front of the car in front of you.

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

anytime i have to brake in heavy traffic I brake much harder for the first about 30% of the time I need to brake, and much softer for the remaining 70%. People are bad at reacting and will react late as hell unless they think they have to react immediately. The harder braking makes them want to start braking, but then we both have plenty of time to stop normally after that first second. It's not as hard as brake checking, I'm not trying to be hit - Just make them think they need to brake NOW.

1 week ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Good point, and it really depends on the situation. There's just to many variables to write them here. Sometimes I have to tell my gal to stop talking because it's distracting and I'm looking at the road. Every distraction can add up and take precious seconds away from your reaction time. So, doing 65 mph is about 95 feet per second OR 6-7 car lengths. ( These are rounded number and averages) Imagine loosing 4 seconds of stopping because you're distracted.

What are you listening to?

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Audio Book is Brandon Sanderson's The Bands of Mourning. Book 6 is the Mistborn series. Love it!

1 week ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I recognized it immediately. Graphic audio is good shit and it's all I listen to while driving now. On Stormlight 5 Wind and Truth right now

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love Mistborn. A truly great fantasy, except (no spoilers) for the fact that he HAS to shoe-horn Christian creation theory into every one of his works, at the expense of the story making sense in the end...

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SPOILER ALERT

All of Sanderson's books take place in the same universe. There was a singular god, but then a bunch of humans got together and killed god and took his power along with different aspects of his personality.
... Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that tracks particularly close to Christian theology.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Except it does. He explicitly says so in interviews, and the end of Mistborn was the start of the Christian Bible to a T.

3 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it inaudible from the capture or is the truck not sounding its horn?

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can hear it. he honks at 23 seconds remaining. (00:29/00:52)

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

… if you say so … I hear something but I hope it sounded a lot louder to the ear, cuz that sucks

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope didn't hear it in person. Granted I was already in "Oh Fuck" mode. It was definitely a quiet horn.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got headphones and yeah it likely was louder in person.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't hear it in the moment. It was super quiet.
