I like the MCU version better than the "you damn kids, get off my lawn!" comic version lol
Not to be confused with Purple Guy, who is an entirely different psycho
I see they kept the shawl consistent
Mr. Akinnuoye-Agbaje followed me on Twitter briefly but I'm pretty sure he doesn't anymore
One of a couple gender swaps they did for the MCU (I believe they also made the character white so as to avoid issues with China, since the comic version of the character was Tibetan)
I imagine Dr. Zola was shown in his original body in flashbacks in the comics, but this is the pic that was in the GHOTMU
He did actually wear a mask like that in the MCU briefly, but not in this pic
He's even got the HYDRA "H" on the waistband of his underwear, that's how you know he's truly devoted to the cause
I don't know why her skin is like that in the drawing
Hoping to see this dude show up again in Quantumania
I'm not sure if the older Marvel TV series (Agents of SHIELD, Inhumans, etc.) are "canon" to the MCU anymore, but I'm including them here anyway, much like most Elfquest fan sites include the original WaveDancers in character lists
Flared sleeves look great on a Ren Faire costume but I feel like they'd be a liability in melee combat
Not sure the comic Crossbones was Brock Rumlow, but the Rumlow character in MCU became Crossbones so he's included here
I wonder why they didn't just put him in purple briefs for the movies. Seems like that'd be easier to render
I don't actually know if her name in the MCU is really "Brunnhilda" or if she is literally just Valkyrie
Bucky was Captain America's young sidekick in the old Golden Age comics, and I think that might have been his full name rather than James Buchanan Barnes but I'm not totally sure. Sidekicks for adult superheroes were popular back then so younger readers had a character they could more readily identify with
Again, this one is Agents of SHIELD, but I say it counts
She was Ms. Marvel in the comics before she was Captain Marvel and I didn't want to clutter up the image with too much text. Also I really hope they avoid that one comic storyline in the MCU, the uh, you know which one I'm talking about. The Problematic™ one
Barton was hard of hearing in the comics and relied heavily on lip-reading when he talked to people. If that's the case with the MCU version too, they haven't mentioned it
They didn't get separate entries in the GHOTMU, just "Nightwing Restorations" so I put the MCU versions together here too
Oh, that's not…bands or something in her hair? It's just dyed that way? Huh okay
I remember watching Iron Fist on Netflix and being so weirded out by the fact "15 years ago" was the early 00s and iPods existed then @_@
A lot of folks are saying the Darkhold is proof that AoS is 100% no longer canon because it looks different. I'm like, it was written by the Marvel Universe's equivalent of Cthulhu, do you REALLY think it can't change shape and be in multiple locations at once
Darren Cross was a very minor character in the comics and didn't ever have a dual identity as Yellowjacket AFAIK but I combined them here for the sake of the compilation
Yep the Destroyer was in the comics too lol. Slightly less spiky though because imagine having to draw all of those over and over and over again by hand
Dr. Strange or as one of my friends called him "Wizard Tony Stark"
"Dormammu, I've come to— wait—what are you WEARING!? did you raid a thrift store??"
Comic Drax was originally a human real estate agent whose soul was put in a different body. The MCU one is just an alien lol
Note that in the comics, Ego was NOT Peter Quill's father. That was another character who hasn't even made any cameos in the MCU as far as I know
Natchios doesn't really sound like a Greek name but lol what do I know
I don't know why the comic version looked like that and I'm glad they didn't make the MCU version 100% faithful to that character design
2008's Incredible Hulk movie does canonically count as part of the MCU, but it's not on Disney+ with the rest of the movies. Licencing issues maybe?
There were a lot of blue aliens in the comics and no they weren't all the same species
IIRC they wanted Zachary Levi to play Fandral from the get-go but couldn't get a contract with him for the first of the Thor movies, so they had to substitute in Prince Charming
dog tax
Flag-Smasher was one character, not a group, in the comics, but I wasn't about to put everyone in the comparison image lol
I can see why they got rid of the white gloves and boots for the MCU version. Those would be annoyingly difficult to clean blood off of constantly
No I don't know what's going on with the drawing's arms. Maybe it's Rob Liefeld art
Hopefully Mr. Ikwuakor wore his prosthetics correctly and doesn't end up with a fatal lifelong painkiller addiction like Torgo's actor from Manos: The Hands of Fate. (or even better maybe they just CG'd the hooves in)
Dr. Pym had a much bigger role in the comics than he's had in the MCU so far. He was a full member of the Avengers, and among other things, it was him who built Ultron, not Tony Stark
One of my friends thinks Cate Blanchett as Hela is Galadriel from an alternate timeline where she accepted the One Ring and IN PLACE OF A DARK LORD YOU SHALL HAVE A QUEEN
Sure he may have been a minor character, but it still counts!
I don't know what Hogun was supposed to be the god of. The god of not-talking?
Here's hoping we see Howard visit Cleveland in the MCU
Yes I know that's the old Sony Spider-Man version but it still counts
Janet was also an active member of the Avengers in the comics. In the MCU it seems to be Hope who is going to do most of the superhero stuff on screen
I figured since the first Captain America movie Red Skull was gonna show up again somewhere. Shame they couldn't have Hugo Weaving reprise the role (I think it was contractual disputes or something))
Wyatt Russell, the latest member of the "We're So Good At Acting That Everyone Hates Us Now" club alongside such luminaries as Jack Gleeson and Imelda Staunton
There weren't a lot of civilians or non-powered characters detailed in the GHOTMU unless they had some significant role in the comics. Justin Hammer was one of those. (Aunt May wasn't)
Yep, he had a first name apparently…and also a title
I haven't watched Inhumans yet but I have a Hulu sub so I definitely need to
Rest in power, Chadwick.
In F&WS season 2 they go to space and Lemar becomes Battlestar Galactica
Well, MOSTLY Tom Hiddleston. Also Chris Evans and Sir Anthony Hopkins in a couple of scenes. And I definitely understand why they didn't give him the comics-accurate headpiece for the movies
The MCU version is gonna end up with one really tanned arm and one really pale arm
They are apparently recasting Luke Cage for the actual MCU-outside-of-Netflix-series, but I don't know yet who they're planning or have any other info
M’Baku also went by a secondary name in the comics, but I'm absolutely not going to open up that can of worms
The comic version doesn't actually look all that elfy…though his ears are hidden by his hair so they could be pointed
Mantis was a human in the comics, and involved with the Cotati, who have been name-dropped in the MCU but not actually appeared yet
Another gender-bent character and I am 100% okay with that
Daredevil was in the GHOTMU but Foggy wasn't, despite being an established character, probably because he was a boring basic civilian
I'm glad they did away with the clown collar for the MCU costume
I'm glad they gave her a dress instead of unitard so she actually looks queenly lol
Whoever reconstructed that image of Monica and removed the background did the laziest possible job on her boots, geez
Yes I say "Romanova" instead of "Romanoff" because SHE'S A WOMAN DAMMIT
Yes Nebula had HAIR in the comics. Also she was actually related to Thanos (presumed granddaughter or great-granddaughter)
Later on in the comics (after some reboots) Nick Fury was drawn to look more like Jackson, with Jackson's permission, because he wanted to be able to play the character if they ever made movies. And that turned out for the best :D
Per a line in Avengers: Endgame, The Big Lebowski exists as a movie in the MCU. So my question is, did Jeff Bridges play The Dude in that version and Tony was just selectively blind to the resemblance to Stane, or did the MCU's version have a completely different actor in The Big Lebowski?
Sir Hopkins is extremely inspiring to me because it shows how even an autistic can reach worldwide acclaim
When Trish was trying on costumes in Jessica Jones season 3, and went "ugh" at the bright yellow one? Easter eeeeggggggg
I'm fine with them having skipped over the origin story for the MCU Spider-Man; most people watching Civil War had either already seen the old Sony movies and/or read the comics, so we didn't really need a refresher
No I am not including Evan Peters in here since if you've seen WandaVision you know that wasn't really Pietro. (Or Peter Maximoff like in the Fox movies, even)
His name was Quentin Black in the comics but they made him Quentin Beck in the MCU. Not entirely sure why, but I'm sure they had their reasons and I'm not gonna quibble
Aw, look at the cute little raccoon! I bet it makes silly little quips and hilarious jokes and—AAAH OH GOD HE JUST SHOT ME IN THE KIDNEY AAHH
lol his hammer in the comics was dinky
Comic Falcon had a telepathic link with an actual bird named Redwing, but I think giving him drones in the MCU is fine too
That comic costume. Sure. Because when I think of ants, I think orange and blue like the University of Illinois' team colours
According to the MCU wiki I found some of these images on, Sif got either snapped or hand-killed by Thanos but then got un-snapped in the Blip, so maybe we'll see her again in the MCU
The comic version was a w i d e l a d
We've only seen Stakar in a couple scenes of GotG2, but he's likely to have bigger roles in future movies
? job by the casting director, finding an actor who actually had the proper Dorito-esque shoulder-to-waist ratio
yes in the comics the Kree were ruled by Slimer from Ghostbusters but with hair
Re-bingeing the entire MCU lately, I had to go look up all the actors and now I can't unhear the Scourgelord Tyrannus in Surtur's voice
Cloak & Dagger is another of the shows that I'm not entirely sure counts as MCU canon but I'm including the characters here because I said so
Big "get off my lawn" energy from the comics version. MCU version is supposed to have platinum hair too but the lighting is weird in that pic
I think in the comics Thanos' race was just supposed to be an offshoot of humans. They never mentioned it at all in the MCU. Me? I'm pretty sure he's an Osun from WildStar
I know in a lot of the Bronze Age comics Thor didn't have a beard, but he'd apparently grown one by 1988 when he appeared in the GHOTMU
The comics, as far as I know, never had an "I am Iron Man" moment—he always just pretended to be Tony Stark's bodyguard who coincidentally was never seen in the same room with him
I bet that cloak was fun to draw. I'm not being sarcastic. Flowy clothing is awesome
I know we saw A FEW Watchers so it's reasonable to think at least one of them is Uatu
It was a good design choice to alter those RC control antennae on his head and make him look more streamlined and badass for the MCU
I don't know what his story was in the comics, but he was there (with the gun on his other arm and a differently-spelled name)
I'm sure we'll be seeing her again
I agree with my elder sister, Bettany is far too pretty a man to have had his face hidden for so many movies
The other two members of the Warriors Three had titles in the comics, but I'm not sure Volstagg ever got one
As we know, she wore a replica of the comic outfit in one episode of WandaVision as an easter egg, but the crimson leather one is gonna be her "real" outfit from now on
"I must destroy The Vision."
"But you ARE The Vision."
*head explodes like robot Santa*
btw Vincent D'Onofrio says "fuck TERFs"
The comic and movie versions of Yondu don't have a lot in common, compared with some of the other characters adapted to film. Comic Yondu actually had a bow and he was a pacifist hunter from an "uncivilised" world
ethurial
How to marvel: gaudy colour palette + popped collar +/- massive shoulder pads +/- cape. New character done.
betelgeux
I'm OK with most of the changes and I'm a true believer from teh 70s
Alsenoth
Missing Quake, Deathlok, Ghost Rider, Hive and Graviton as big mentions from Shield.
amethystsadachbia
Quake and Hive weren't around in the 1980s or at least not in the GHOTMU. Ghost Rider had no pic. Deathlok had a different name.
Zixtank
JK Simmons reprised his role as Jameson in the MCU, albeit missing his glorious silver hair.
TehSpirit
and being more of a alex jones character than a biased news publisher
PicassoCT
I believe they also made the character white so as to avoid issues with China, since the comic version of the character was Tibetan. WTF
discitus
Yeah it's messed up. Corporations are so afraid of losing business in China that they scrub mentions of Tibet & Uighurs.
GoodFUCKINGmorning
I did a double take when I read the word ElfQuest. Love that comic. I’m dyslexic and it helped me learn how to read.
CloudsandRainandSunandWind
Ooh, yes, great comics.
4vie
Having the Grand Master played by Jeff Goldblum is a clear improvement. So is the Ancient One. Hell, most of these are clear upgrades!
realscrumpysteve
You mentioned Wildstar and my heart ached for a moment
capngoat
#67 how do shadows work?
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
Maybe he's hovering. He's Samuel L. after all. He can hover if he motherfuckedly wants to.
Kjasi
Lost opportunity to give Yondu the secondary name "Mary Poppins".
amethystsadachbia
yeah I'll admit that would have been a good addition
Diverge
Waaait a sec, there's been another Hulk after Lou Ferrigno? Can't see anyone topping that
PressCta
Serious question, are there any gender bent characters from woman to man in any comic to movie/tv adaptations?
amethystsadachbia
Not sure. I feel like probably not, since superheroes were a real boys' club in older comics and it's nice to even out the ratio a little.
dickable
#57 For those too lazy to Google it, he went by "Man-Ape", and it's just as bad as you imagine.
GuitarsAndCodeAndRage
Wasn't JK Simmons in the credits scene of "Far From Home", too? Counts as MCU to me. Good job, OP!
amethystsadachbia
Yup, that's why I included him!
selej
Hope they keep the marvel/rogue story. But thats just the 45 year old male comic nerd talking. After all her movie wasnt made for me... ;p
JimboTCB
Black Bolt's full name is Blackagar Boltagon? That's really fucking stupid even by comic book standards.
imgurj17
Did anyone see who played Drax?
dschuma
I saw his name on a blank background. Must have forgot to include him
wellthisjustgotinteresting
ngl they do a pretty good job of making the characters look less fucken stupid
Slixxerman
Monica_Rambeau is Photon
ChimeraGirl
It's volstagg the mighty! The mighty!
gorillaClutch
Wasn't he volstagg the voluminous?
Strangeboke
the running gag is that he's got like fifty titles he alternates between.
RSGAlex
I think it was The Voluminous Volstagg, in that order.
NotoriousBadassWhoLovesMusicals
Volstagg the Voluptous?
DildoRodeo
Volstagg the Viriiiiiile!
bigfatdan1
Volstagg the Vast!
JhericFury
#11 I'm sorry, his name is what?
BrutusGrimme
There’s also Jack Hart, his superhero name is Jack of Hearts
TrapperQ
Quick, tell 'em about Jack Russell.
JohnCheshirsky
Blackagar Boltagon, it's right there in the picture!
GasBandit
Oh but you buy "Bendydick Crumplesnoot?"
TheDayTheBrainStoodStill
They can't all be winners.
ShadeEmberi
some of the original costumes are just so awful, but then this modern one is just...a dude
TheDayTheBrainStoodStill
He has an actual costume though he doesn't use it much on the show. But not sure why this picture doesn't show that.
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
They always use the most awful & ancient artwork for these comparisons. Some character designs date back ...
ShadeEmberi
thank you
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
to the early 60s. The MCU costumes were based on far more recent costume versions. (Danny Rand is an exception though. He still looks goofy)

#18 Wrong Ms Marvel. That's the second one, Sharon Venture (Now called She-Thing).
bill4935
"Go, Sharon Venture!" ...nah, sounds better if she's on some kind of Venture team.
amethystsadachbia
Sharon Venture also got used as a 3D printer by an extradimensional guy who wanted to exist on Earth?
Legomaniac91
No, she got a blast of cosmic radiation and got turned into a rule 63 version of The Thing
TehSpirit
i think they are referring to that the picture of Ms Marvel 1 in GHOTMU is actually a picture of Ms Marvel 2.
RobvanSomeren
Toomes always makes me immediately think about that super scary X-Files dude.
MangoLassi
Who?
amethystsadachbia
Eugene Victor Toomes, the liver dude
MangoLassi
Oh okay, I haven't seen that episode.
RobvanSomeren
The creepy guy called tooms who can slide through the narrowest openings. S01e21

Oh and ep03 as well

Youhavinagiraffe
I know comics fans treat this kind of opinions as a hate crime but I'm really glad they didn't just copy the ridiculous original designs
cAPTNcAPSLOCK
nah, the old costumes are just over the top ridiculous and didn't age well at all.
BeesechurgerProductions
They did a great job updating the big-name heroes' looks, and I'm glad the heroes who were more secret agent-y got costumes reflecting that.
keenidiot
I'm a comic fan, and mostly I'm pleased with the updated movie suits.
doesntmatter
I'm both glad they didn't and super sad they didn't
RoundThreeFIGHT
I think Scarlet Witch was handled the best that way. Do an homage to it but then upgrade the design. Worked out nicely
HarryBlackstoneCopperfieldDresdenIsMyPatronus
Heard she signed on with the condition she would NOT wear it. Then the idea for the show episode came up and they suggested Bettany's >>>
HarryBlackstoneCopperfieldDresdenIsMyPatronus
outfit, and she insisted on a faithful recreation for her costume. She was so psyched to present it satirically as a Halloween costume.
amethystsadachbia
GHOTMU = Gamer's Handbook of the Marvel Universe, a TTRPG system published from 1988–1992 by TSR (famous for D&D)
Leucienweaver
Two things. Volstagg the Voluminous, and Scourgelord Tyrannus is a massive throwback, but I rewatched some clips and DAMN if they don't work
amethystsadachbia
"Trap them within the tunnel! BURY THEM ALIVE!"
Leucienweaver
BDK ever since 3.1 with Ulduar and Armor Pen. I hit 107% and i've been chasing that high ever since.

Thank you! But there was a lot of other acronyms in there I didn't get either.
RainbowAmoeba
So wait- that entire conversation with Dormammu was just Butterfree Crumplesnap arguing with himself? I don’t even know how I missed that.
litelbrown
I hope Inhumans isn't canon... So bad
SkunkMom
My ex's favorite thing to say about comics is "Blackbolt's real name is Blackagar Boltagon and that's all you need to know"

So what is TTRPG?

"I prefer comic Thanos, he's badass!" Comic Thanos:
NiceLegsDaisyDukesMakesAMAAANOUTOFYOOOUUUU
Love Comic!Thanos. Got a peek at him in the early saga. Srsly don't know why they changed his design to a terrible excuse of a Smurf.
thatauzzieguy
We have Thanos at home.
LiterallyAWizard
Oof, bad pic. Looks like he's wearing a diaper. This is the sort of pic your friend keeps on Facebook after the bender, even when you beg
HangingOnTheEdgeOfTomorrow
He's just a legendary asshole in the comics
joechristo
It’s a spider man superstory for kids under 8, by all means let’s have his daughter’s partially decomposed zombie body walking around, Drat!

He does! And you know it’s his because it said “THANOS” on the tail.

Yes and it is absolutely the most adorable little thing you've ever seen.
CommissarFuklaw
Yes, which was in Endgame as the double bladed spinny sword.
TheDayTheBrainStoodStill
I loved that little detail. Apparently almost nobody noticed it, which, how could you not notice he's waving a helicopter blade around!?
DickMercenary
Oh shit.. someone else who played and remembers Wildstar?
MangoLassi
I played it for a little bit.
dschuma
RIGHT??
bril350
That game came out the same time as elderscrolls online right? No wonder it didnt get traction
DickMercenary
Yeah.. it Everquest 2-ed itself. EQ2 came out same time as WoW.
MangoLassi
That... makes so much sense...
amethystsadachbia
I don't know how big a role ESO's release played in that, but I blame NCsoft for most of the issues and Carbine Studios itself for a little
amethystsadachbia
NCsoft barely advertised WS to compete with the other MMOs and then were all Surprised Pikachu when it didn't become a WoW-killer
MangoLassi
NCSoft doesn't seem very good. :/ Not the games they're holding under them, but NCSoft itself.
amethystsadachbia
They truly aren't. And they won't sell the rights to old games because they'd be ashamed if someone else made them successful.
