Hoping for 10 to make sure I can post to r/medicalschool tomorrow. We find out where we go for residency!

If this post gets 100 points I'll share a medical story involving this maraca

100 point edit: So during my 4th year, I was on trauma surgery nights. Around 2am we received a consult to come see an older white gentleman (likely in his 60's). When we arrive to see him he is in agony lying on his side. We begin to question him and find out that someone has shoved something into his rectum. He says he was drugged and cannot tell us what this object is. The senior resident attempts to manually disimpact whatever item it is and is unable to. He tells me it feels similar to a cue ball but will not budge. We get an abdominal x-ray and only see a hollow ball of air. Still confused and unable to remove the object he gets taken to surgery to remove the item later that morning. Upon removal it is the maraca seen above with the handle broken off.

There are two prevailing theories.
One: Said elderly male had gotten bored with his life and decided to experiment. Older male inserts maraca. Older male then attempts to remove maraca by handle and handle breaks. Makes up story to avoid embarrassment

Two: My resident tells me the story that apparently, in his experience, drug dealers would use various means of rectal trauma to those who did not pay for their goods in a timely manner. During his time as a student he had many patients come in with gunshot wounds to the rectum. Apparently the term "pop a cap in your ass" was actually something that occurred. These individuals would have to get colostomy bags typically from such trauma. Apparently now they may be saving on bullets and just shoving random objects up there instead.

FP edit: Don't need nudes. Send your tangentially related medical problems.

Wrong. You still get the disease, you just fight it off faster. it doesn't die instantly on contact. And just a FYI, there is no TB vaccine

#3 Fun fact: based off of the latin word for working animals, veterinae. The first vets were the men who took care of the roman army horses

You have my upvote regardless. "He don't know what a cardiac arrest is." LOL

I've also disimpacted some random stuff too, like a CD rom split in half, a couple of plastic forks, and a dead chipmunk

My first day of psychiatry we walked in and walked past a patient room. The room had every ceiling tile torn from the roof. We assumed (1/?)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It was merely under construction. We were wrong. Apparently that morning a man came in high on spice (K2, synthetic MJ, etc.) and (2/?)

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Tore down every ceiling tile. They walked into his room to find the tiles everywhere and him in the rafters staring down with no shirt (3/4)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

On and bleeding. They ended up having to put him into a confinement room until he came down. Don't do spice kids. Rhabdo can kill you (4/4)

Jokes on you. Hive mind.

That snap chat is exactly how someone gets fired (or expelled from nursing school)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It actually looks HIPAA compliant. No PID anywhere- just the patient's age and gender

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Regardless of it being hippa compliant. It's excessive but that's what the rules are

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At my nursing school and hospitals were doing our Clinical's, taking a picture of a patients chart is automatic grounds for dismissal

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's probably good practice, but there's nothing license-threatening in this pic

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey! I have #2 shirt. Nice.

My undergrad/med school + wife's undergrad/PT school = a cool half million. It's like a mortgage... without the house

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm looking at right about the same!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm looking at 350k when I graduate between undergrad and med school lol. Solidarity!

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Why not move to the state, wait the req'd time, and save 100k? (Idk what med school costs but god damn, over a quarte-million?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's very difficult to get in to med school only around 30% of all applicants make it, and you have no idea where you'll get accepted.. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Most applicants (myself included) apply to 15 or more schools and go wherever accepts you. If that happens to be out of state so be it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why on earth would you go out of state if you knew these consequences? Is your school that much better? Genuine question.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Sometimes it's the only place you get accepted

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Medical field is very competitive. Depending on your chosen field, without a more prestigious school it's hard to get a job in it.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

That really sucks. Good luck in your field!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, not really. Getting into med school is competitive. But the country needs more doctors so it's easy to find a job unless your area 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I looked up this one cause it sounded weird, she actually says "500 thousand milligrams of morphine"

9 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

In Norway/Sweden, a year's tuition at medical University costs around $50 for the registration fee. Ah, the perils of wicked Socialism.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A pressure of 40/ palp a) pt is already coding or b) 10mg of morphine is going to put him in respiratory arrest

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Even so. You don't give morphine or anything that lowers blood pressure to anyone with systolic bp of 90 or below. Spells death.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

What if they want to die. Then maybe you do.

Well... Thanks, but could you tell me which minute I'm looking for?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you open it in a new tab and it'll autoplay at the 1015th second.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That explains it. I watched it on my phone and... Well, you can guess how well that turned out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly at minute 17
