What are these? Greetings, Europe.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I hope Mary A. Morrison has LifeLock

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 1: have money

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In which 3rd world country people still write checks?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Only in america...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I carry a check in my wallet for in case I forget my debit or credit card. It has totally saved my ass. That was my Grammys advice.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow... I feel ancient that I know how they work, and I'm in my 20's.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cute? No, I write "Thanks for letting me poop on your chest" on every one so the teller sees it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"We no longer accept checks"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol I learned this in the 4th grade. Also, use your bank's online bill pay function, people. Writing a check is ridiculously antiquated.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How to write a check: Don't. Pay your bills online, it's not the Dark Ages.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Dad tip: in the " For:" section put your child's name and child support or she can claim you haven't paid

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if that knowledge is from your own experience, i feel bad for you man :(

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A check? Is this the stone age? Last time I saw one was > 15 years ago (Germany calling).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: technically a "check" doesn't have to be written on a check. As long as it has the correct info it is legal.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With a few exceptions, yeah. Normal checks are just legally-binding instructions for your bank.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Incorrect. Legit checks are printed with special MICR ink. Don't encourage morons out there to start writing checks on napkins and such.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

bu...but it comes with instructions

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Once, I was working at a gas station and, one of our illiterate regulars asked me to fill out his only check and, I wrote the wrong amount.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like an idiot

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pro Tip: Its 2016, stop using cheques.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

Seriously.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i still get a lot from call outs where people want to pay it on the spot.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What does the current year have to do with it?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think we haven't used those like after 1930s? So; much.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DO NOT WRITE DOLLARS. The check already says "dollars". If you write out "twenty dollars," you're actually writing "twenty dollars dollars."

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dollar dollar bill yall

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fun fact, whatever you write in that box to the right doesn't actually matter, the only part that does is the bit with the words written out

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so if you happen to write 10,000 dollars in the line and 100 dollars in the box, welp, you're paying 10,000

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Although it'd be really tough to write "ten thousand" when you meant "one hundred"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it happens more than you think, i've done data entry for tax season and people do way crazier variations

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Poor Mary A Morrison is about to hook me up with that electronic wire.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Methinks the account numeros may be less than legit...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, thats what a COP WOULD SAY ISN'T IT?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What sorcery is this paper transaction?!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

A what now? Is this advice for time travellers?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My roommates usually write "For the glorious Blumpkins you give ;) " in the bottom right

9 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 12

I always write "booty call" or "drugs"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Sensual Massage"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bottom left

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Yes, that

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Years ago, my roommate wrote for a "blowjob". A few weeks later, i noticed a weird deposit amount...called the bank and they told me who

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

wrote the check...and then read the memo aloud in the most professional, non-judgmental way

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I was lending my dad some money. I wrote "hookers and blow" in the memo line. He thought it was funny. He said the bank teller didn't.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish they had covered this in school.....

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They might in the special classes

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You must've gone to a crappy school if they never covered this. Now I know how to write checks and successfully use the quadratic formula

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quadratic formula was covered, checks no. Maybe I should have taken that life's skills class that sounded boring as hell....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well now you figured it out here, in 30 seconds, that you could have figured out any time you needed it with one quick google search.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's almost like it was never taught in school because it would have been a massive waste of time.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Remember to add a line through the fully written out part at the end to prevent modification. and use a fucking pen you twits.

9 years ago | Likes 146 Dislikes 0

It's called a "meganagrabber".

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in The UK we write 'only' after the amount, ex: 'fifty pounds only'

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How does it prevent modification? If a person is skilled enough to modify letters, can't they add a line? Never used checks, FWIW.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's not like that. You can write out "One hundred" but if you don't mark out the end someone can add "and fifty" or whatever afterwards.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was taught to add " and no/100" after my amount. I don't know why "no" instead of 00 but it's how I was raised.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, whatever works right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also a line through the blank space after the "who the money is for" line. Otherwise someone can add "or XXXX" and it's depositable by them.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Wow, I've honestly never even thought of that

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well, I've created a criminal.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Or just given a criminal advice on how not to get criminal-ed by others (PS I'm not really a criminal unless you count speeding)

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

...and recreational drug use.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're a horrible human being. Say NO to drugs! Damn speedsters...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use a pen for all serious documents

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Just use a pen generally.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blue pen if you can. Easier to prove the original.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good point

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's mightier than a sword.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People use cheques these days?

9 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 8

I haven't in 5+ years. I packed my old checkbook in a move and never found it again. Never replaced it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Upvote for using "cheques"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My lawn service gets them, and charities...but usually I don't use them. I love google wallet or direct bank transfers for most things.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I use them to pay rent and for random stuff where they take cash or check but not a card

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was amazed when I moved to the states (for a limited time) and people expected to be payed by cheque.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Last time I saw one in Norway was the early nineties.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lived in the states in 2009.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Contractors. Lots of them. Paid and cashed same day.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rarely but yes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. A dozen every year hahahahaha

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get them in lieu of cash for longer housesitting & dogwalking jobs. Usually when it's over $100.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My kid's school asks for checks to pay for things like chess club, etc. I pay my hair stylist by check so she doesn't have to pay CC fees

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only because the bank doesn't "allow" me over $100 a day.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My utilities company doesn't let you sign on for paperless billing until 6 months of bills paid on time. Also to buy Girl Scout Cookies.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've mostly used cheques as an instrument where they weren't actually cashed, like post-dated deposits.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only until all the old fucks who are so angrily terrified of the internet die.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 9

Cant come soon enough.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Often. For local small businesses.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Exactly

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rent.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I haven't used one in a while, but for my first two years of adulting I did. Then I was almost late on a car payment and decided to internet

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Electronic transfer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Landlords in their 80s who don't know what the hell an electronic transfer is. Ugh.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you have anyone working on a house or anything cheques are handy, don't usually keep thousands of dollars in cash.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Why would you pay for them in cash? In Finland they'd just send you a bill which you would pay online, even with your phone in like 2 secs.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My bank allows email transfers of up to $10,000 at at $0.25 per transaction (which is cheaper than what they charge for a book of checks).

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what is an email transfer?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a cheque-like online interbank transfer meant for small payments between individuals. Notification of payments are sent via email. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Canada, people with accounts at major banks can initiate a payment, and anyone with a Canadian bank account can receive payments. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So basically a normal transfer with email notifications?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does anyone outside of the US use cheques still?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yes, but less and less. Here in France they are free so that's a free payment method.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

School spent a year to teach us how to work with checks in accounting, and then they got abolished the year before I graduated. Oh well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have never actually seen a cheque in my nearly-30 years on this earth.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I last saw a cheque in Poland some 20 years ago.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In France, cheques are still very common.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

havent seen one in over 10 years

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Never written a single one in my entire life. My parents used to, but that's almost 20 years ago. Now it's all cash or bill/transfer.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not in the EU anyway

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Actually in the UK they sti....oh, right. Nevermind.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In France they do

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

France doesn't count.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: The dollar amount in numbers doesn't matter, the fully written out amount is the binding amount.

9 years ago | Likes 420 Dislikes 0

Almost... in any contractual document written takes precedent over #s if there's a dispute. #s are still important though

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But should it be one thousand two hundred, or twelve hundred? Or does that even matter?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't matter.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Here the two numbers must match or the check is invalid.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun Fact: Checkques were abandoned in the late 80’s in the rest of the world.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, I'm a Banker.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not at all. I've had my bank take more out because one of my numbers was alittle sloppy. When I called they said the machine doesn't bother

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're in the US, the ATM might look at the numbers but it sounds like you've got an issue with your bank. Words > numbers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lots of comments so I'll expand on my comment. United States UCC § 3-114: Handwritten > Typewritten > Printed. Words > Numbers.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In a British bank they'll reject it if the number doesn't match the written.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dad was given grieft by his bank because I goofed and the number did not match the written out amoutn.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another fun fact: You can literally use any piece of paper to write a check as long as you put the routing and bank account number on it.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Man I don't remember routing numbers. Lucky me we have smartphones now.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you pullin my leg

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Nope. The specific font is only there so they can be automatically processed. You could write a check on a napkin.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As someone who works in a bank, I wish everyone knew this...and also knew how to write in general.

Or reject the cheque depending on the bank. Source: Personal experience.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes having really old parents is useful my dad was 43 when I was born

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone who manages ATMs remotely for a bank, the dollar amount in numbers is what the ATMs scan. :P

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes but the back office and legally, it's the written amount.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Correct.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a check for "5k" but the person wrote out five on the line. If I owned a business I'd be pissed if that passed as a payment.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well here in Australia the amounts in both need to add up. You know for basic fraud detection ...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think that's why they take the written number, as its harder to change than, say, a seven into a nine.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On one had it makes sense, but on the other hand I have fingers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. But That's why checking both is a good idea. Means now they need the numbers and the writing to match.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When you put a check in the ATM, it scans the dollar amount. Eventually, it gets approved. Do people always check to see that they match?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not necessarily true. I've had the ATM reject checks if it didn't match and make me go to the teller instead.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I check to make sure they match. I could see people taking the easy road and only looking at the numbers

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact : in France (don't know about other countries), the date doesn't matter : the check can be cashed as soon as written

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same in the US. Post-dating checks does nothing. If signed then it can be deposited/cashed.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Worked at HSBC in England. Post dated cheques are either cashed directly or if the teller spots the date is "wrong" rejected/shredded

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok so I don't understand this at all can you rephrase it?

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If [[numerical != written]]; then echo "Value:$written"; fi

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You got forty money, not 40 money.

Does anyone else always want to reduce the fraction at the end? 9/20ths in this case?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Now convert that to metric.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, because it's in cents so always written as a fraction of a hundred. Remember, it's a Latin root.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If the numeral value and the word value aren't the same, the value of the check is the word value.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

I always thought the check might be invalid if the numeral & word values didn't match?

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Nope! It probably should be, but it's not.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

TIL

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Write words and shit yo.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But don't catch of fire or nothin

But don't catch of fire or nothin

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But don't catch of fire or nothin

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You write the check amount in words on the long line in the middle and in digits on in small box on the right. The words are binding.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ohhhhhh ok lol I feel dumb

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

eh, don't worry about it

How to spell cheque

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 12

You should cheque your non-american privileges there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*chequeue. Because I'm always waiting for mine

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not in Murica

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Canada - cheque. In Murica- check. Also in Canada this isn't try, the amounts have to match.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well I'm Canadian lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True*

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're aware that the American spelling is the original English spelling? Britons changed it wanting to be more like the French. No, really.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

British history is full of love/hate with France and it's language. French was in vogue enough for us to steal vocabulary then war then back

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was curious about the difference and was surprised that we got our spelling from the Brits and they changed instead of the other way.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometime in the 18th century it started being spelt with the French influence. Check>checque>cheque. Etymology is an amateur hobby of mine
