They shave and apply another layer of water that freezes smooth. So you were right, just missing part of it.

If you get in the ice right after, don’t fall, you get all wet. It takes a few minutes to fully freeze.

Zambonis also shave the ice to help resurface it, helping to eliminate deeper gouges. This is kind of a free phone vs $1500 phone situation.

The free phone works and you can still install snap on it, but the expensive phone has more power and bells and whistles.

That is also to keep the ice between 3/4 and 1 1/2 inches think on a rink. It tends to chip really easily if it is too thick.

A Zamboni weights about 9000 lb. Dunno if that's a good idea to use it on a natural ice short of ice road strength. That limits it's use.
