"Star Wars was painted. Almost impossible to believe that most of the epic widescreen sci-fi images in the first 3 Star Wars films were done by 3 matte painting artists. These are fake sets made with plexiglass and oil paint. Even the 100s of stormtroopers were painted." - Ewan Morrison

Ooh wow.

I mean yeah, not much CGI back then.

That is amazing, seen it 100 times and never assumed it was a matte painting.

Wait, are you telling me that people are surprised that in 1977, movies weren't CGI?

All the ship scenes, Battle of Yavin for ex, were stop motion. They had every model ship suspended and took photos of every angle you see.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always looked for those scenes

That's why I love the OT Empire. They have the human touch.

The ambient light detail on those Stormtroopers still amazes me. Techniques from 80s movies are far more impressive than anything today.

My favourite of this technique is cliff-dive,Butch Cassidy&Sundance Kidd. It’s a cherry-picker over a swimming pool with painted landscape

he can paint my house.

Now a computer does the painting.

A person does the painting on the computer. It looks fantastic if the studio gives artists the time and money.

My eyes are ceramic. Caught a bazooka round at Little Big Horn. Or was it Okinawa? The one without the Indians.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe that most of us know this but I'm old.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And it looks 100% better than these fake ass CGI extras they put into movies nowadays.

you mean BG stills of low detailed troopers are better than animated digidoubles? apples and oranges.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Great, now I'm hungry.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't you a little two-dimensional for a stormtrooper?

6 years ago | Likes 565 Dislikes 0

In the film they're one dimensional! :D

You mean the death star landing was faked?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anyone know where these are today? I would love to see them.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Impossible to believe in this day and age of computers. But back before they existed people did shit by hand. Just scale was different. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which is true of basically everything but the live actors themselves for the whole trilogy.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of those matte painters lives in my hometown of Auburn, CA

The amount of commitment that went into the original is the reason why it will always be better than any of the new movies.

And now, put out a casting call for 100,000 storm troopers, you'll get half a million applicants, no less than half have their own armor.

So we never landed on the moon after all, did we?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes we did, and we did it in metric.

Did someone just watch the corridor digital video of vfx artists react?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, just released their LoTR one too

With that mustache are you sure this isn't for the porn version of Star Wars?

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Nope, just the 70s

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The light saber blades were hand-animated as well

After I watched the originals for the ninth time, there is a couple scenes where you can tell :/

R2D2 was voiced by the Arp 2600 synthesizer.

In the first movie (New Hope) they were sticks covered in reflective tape. That's why half the beam is dull/invisible when at angles.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

That is true, however the coloring was done by hand

Blaster fire was the sound of striking a cable supporting a telephone pole.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was beautiful. I say "was" since several of the matte paintings were replaced with cheesy CFI when remastered. Crime against art IMO

6 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 4

^IT... I mean, I'm no looker. SO CLEARLY I meant "it"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure you're pretty fellow, go easy on yourself.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Til. It was George locas who did it. I assumed it was done without his consent, but nope, he likes it

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WTF is CFI?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

CGI. I'm struggling to type today.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank God. I thought I got old and missed and entire new technology.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crime against the original art. I despise that Disney doesn't at least give us the option to watch the originals unremastered on Disney+

6 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 3

Every "remastered" scene is painfully out of place. I see what they were going for, but the technology wasn't there yet to make the added

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

scenes seamless. Instead it looks like they inserted cartoons over live actors and practical effects.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Should the Star Trek TOS "remasters" pretty much all space scenes have been replaced with really bad CGI.
