FP edit: The only way to fight back against this change is to leave, just like what happened to Tumblr. Google drive and MEGA are 2 good alternatives for image hosting while Reddit and even 4chan can fill in that community void depending on your tastes. Let them advertise to the shrinking audience that’ll stay with this sinking ship of a site.

Edit 2: Can't even download my albums or images in bulk, all you'll get is an insignificant 22 bit file so good luck saving everything manually 1 by 1

Edit 3: Points on this post are now frozen, the number won't go up or down either way now.

Well there goes all my art and views on them. It might be a small amount but this is the only audience I can reach. Oh well I guess...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The other way to fight: everyone post The Gif™️ on the 15th. Advertisers won’t like when the user base commits Sepukku out of spite and suddenly there’s no one to advertise to

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Looks like I'm gonna be banned in a few days cause I regularly use Imgur to screenshot stuff to send to friends and that does include porn fairly often.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Oh well. Good while it lasted. Yet another case of totally unnecessary censorship in the interest of making money for a few people who are already too rich to spend what they have in one lifetime.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Two more days until imgur becomes the next Digg. I'll miss you guys. Donate to the internet archive and learn to become an archivist, too.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

we should stage a no-use day in protest. let them know that, yeah sure you want to be more profitable, but you can’t do that without us, and shit like this will drive us away. anyone down?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

This ought to go well for their bottom line. Good job, imgur staff. Maybe you guys should've focused on the nazism issue 'round here, rather than going all puritan over a private boob pic.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Imgur IS going worse and worse. I thought that censorship was already in use for months. I really prefer Tumblr now..

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oops, how did this graph of Tumblr's user engagement surrounding their explicit content ban get here?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is this where we get banned for collectively saying fuck Medialab? ;-D

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm against them doing this despite never using imgur to store explicit photos

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So . . . are we going to flood the front page with the Scrubs "bring back the porn" pic?

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

This call to action deserves its own post. Ping me when it's up.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's... like... a fuck ton of my favs though

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Better download them then! Once the dust settles, you'll either see additional hosting options emerge and you can put them there, or just host them yourself, or something simple like an S3clone image host, etc.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

How do you download everything in your favorites?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On mobile at least, tap a favorite to go its page. If it's an image/video directly, there should be a download icon along the bottom. If the link goes to a post page (with all the original comments), tap the image/video *again* to get to its direct page for download. (I don't remember the equivalent steps on the browser version, but they're there somewhere.)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All the awesome porn subreddits are going to be empty after this lol

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

It's started early. A lot of broken links on Reddit already

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nooooooooooo

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm never not reminded of what happened to Tumblr. How much is it worth now?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

About $6.3m. It was once $1.1B. It was sold twice in 2019. Imgur goin' the route of Tumblr is.... unfortunate, but if Imgur wants to kill it's userbase (and seemingly by nearly 99%), so be it. Reddit I go.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fark.com was one of my favorite sites way back when. It was a news aggregator with a comments section for each link (kinda like a proto-Reddit) and was pretty popular. Then they began sanitizing the place to make it more appealing to advertisers. Drove away a lot of users, myself included. I went back recently to see if Fark even existed anymore, and to my surprise it does, but it's less than a shadow of its former self. I can easily see Imgur going the same way. Not dead, but... reeeaal sleepy.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Now there's a name I've not heard in a long time...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a former Farker with a four digit account number, I agree wholeheartedly. I even tried to be supportive via Ultrafark, but the changes eliminated the spirit of the place that I once enjoyed.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so this site will be dead in 3 days, got it

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

Compare the amount of votes & views for FP posts from then and now. Imgur has less than a quarter of the activity it did 5 years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Half the time, whatever makes front page only has a few hundred interactions at most.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, and IIRC it used to be several thousand was the minimum. I feel like the site has lost a solid 90% of its active (or at least upvoting) base, but I'm not so sure on that number.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

TBH, as I've said before, they have a problem not endorsing nazism, or atleast not punishing people for disagreeing with nazism. I honestly feel no remorse that a site that can't remove mods that punish people for saying "nazis bad" or "why do they have to KILL people", is circling the drain. Infact, good. Enjoy languishing in obscurity for your negligence, imgur. I'll be off on the COOL NEW SITE that ALLOWS BOOBS, and not HEILING HITLER.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree with you about moderating nazi's, but I will say that imgur is incredibly left leaning compared to... Lots of other places. It did have a large-scale brush with the alt-right back during the whole gamer-gate thing, but it (somehow) came out the other-side with a fairly wide consensus of Nazi's being bad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It died about 4 years ago. It’s ghost has lived on, but now they’re gonna exorcise that, too,

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I only have one image that might be affected and it's just a harmless guy closing his eye.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

God, this is horseshit. I've been on this site off and on for about a decade, and this place is falling apart. App constantly broken, yet they have no problem slamming this shit through. If ads played as shittily as the rest of the content here, maybe they'd fix anything.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Notice that replies have been expanded (very cheap) while picture and gif responses are dying out? It used to be if you googled site:imgur.com for anything you could find so much, now it's a half page of crap.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So many top posts On Reddit will disappear.

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

Reddit is also changing its terms of service to disable third party APIs which archive data like Pushshift. Seems way too convenient two different companies shove down two advertiser friendly policies down the throats of its users within 2 weeks.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

Well mostly because the changes are about being in compliance with laws in several free countries. Usersub is to blame for not maintaining some standard of post.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 14

bruh, your saying its our fault that imgur is removing PRIVATE content? what are you smoking and where can i get some

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This is an image viewing site not a cloud server though right?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 6

Its their servers. They decide. But there will be a day when nobody can create user content online because every corporate platform, from the hosting service to the ISP, auto-filters it out in fear of human stuff and copyrighted content. The only way to post anything would be to register as an advertiser because they can post whatever they want wether its malware, way too much skin, or original content, without being flagged.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

It's not far from now, they already make their AI filter what they don't like, check this twitter thread(it's in spanish, basically he asked chat GPT to make a song about Fidel Castro, the AI refused because it thought it was contoversial, but accepted for Obama, while claiming to be politically neutral) : https://twitter.com/Edisson_hilos/status/1656105205237268481 And I was just suspended here on imgur for having the wrong opinion basically, didn't break any rules.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Ahhh, capitalism at its finest

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's their servers, but it's OUR community.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Perhaps we need an activity pub based replacement. Like mastodon replaces twi**er

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, wait can mastodon replace imgur too? Does it have image support?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mastodon may or may not, but I was thinking of a new thing that is based on activity pub, the tech behind Mastodon. Activity Pub is used to federate all the different mastodon instances.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hadn't realized that Alan Schaaf left after Imgur was acquired by MediaLab

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

down hill ride. time to find a new website

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Who is/was he 'round here? Anyone important?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He was the old creator of it I think

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oooh, ouch. Any word on an official statement about the intermittent spurts of nazi sympathy from imgur staff over the years? I mean, seriously, what POSSIBLE reason beyond that particular mod having a proclivity toward heiling hitler, would there be to flag a post that read "nazis cant be allowed to kill people again"?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I have no idea what you're talking about 🤷‍♀️

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's been a bit of a problem with people being punished for *entirely harmless or reasonable* takes *against* nazism. Which infers enough about the situation, that you can probably tell, you got punished, because someones a nazi, or atleast soft on nazism- and not another poster like you. Right wingers flag posts all the time, over being right, or stating facts, and nothing happens. Meaning the problem in question, is on staff.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Points on this post are now frozen, I hope Imgur burns to the ground faster than Tumblr did

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 5

holy shit they are! it eats my vote and resets to 331 when i F5. maybe imgur actually was quietly suppressing my post on this topic?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

A. They're fake internet points.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

B. Relax, Francis.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

C. Holy FUCK are you people all over reacting. I would have sworn Trump won a second term. Calm the hell down jesus christ.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

not only that, i think down votes count as double. Checked out of curiosity and it seems 1 downvote is counting as 2.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I need a gif of imgur getting fucked in the ass by advertisers. Anyone have one?

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Naw, Imgur slobs them gratis

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reddit is full of error messages. It's well under way.

2 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 1

What!? Is Reddit doing this shit too

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

People use Imgur for images posted to Reddit

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Well used to. I would think all the active redditers host at reddit now given it's been quite awhile since they started hosting themselves. Really old stuff would be lost. There was plenty of time for people to save pics and rehost at reddit though, so I'm not sure how much would ultimately be lost.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Twas Imgur's original purpose, before reddit could handle images itself.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

without the porn, why go on Reddit

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Redgifs has taken over a lot of it, but a fair amount still links up to imgur. Porn, like life, will always find a way.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There is never ending porn on Reddit. Yeah Imgur hosts a ton. But porn will prevail

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Waiting to see how many post The Gif on Monday in protest

2 years ago | Likes 181 Dislikes 10

I feel like this comment should stay at 69 upvotes.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Already overshot that, nothing left but have people push it to 690

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

but it was perfect!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Pffffhahaha

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Where can I find the gif we all know? I've ever only seen it on imgur.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I love this

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So, private nsfw images, too? Shame. I use imgur to move my drawings to my phone or pc. And a handful are nsfw drawings.

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

Yup. I enjoy imgur in general, but I also use it to distribute nudes. If you find or know a good alternative, please let me know.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"Drawings" or art, previous reports said was ok. But the purge is going to be done by AI bots, so we will see how accurate they are. May want to download your stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

They also said pornographic. Considering there's a lot of drawn-art-porn, I suspect he'll get targeted.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used to be a way to download yer whole accounts pics. Wonder if thats still a thing

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a fun picture of my dick dressed up as a pirate that I use to remind people of the perseid meteor showers.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well, it's in front of a piece of notebook paper with the reminder, and none of those things really go together — it was kind if an inside joke.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never dressed up your penis for fun? I used to have a duty belt with a .45 and flack jacket from a GI Joe doll I would use.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Solid choice. 1990s McNugget toy fireman hat here.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fix the buggy app? Nope. The struggling server? Nope. New TOS to stir the pot? BINGO!

2 years ago | Likes 673 Dislikes 14

Is this why I haven't seen any thigh Thursdays, and the pole student has been having a tough time?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Where are we moving to get our new meme/nsfw fix?

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

There are limitless avenues for nsfw fixes. As to memes, I consider most of them too puerile to be mourned.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I'm giving up. I'll be counting on memory and my local storage. Everywhere more than 3 people gather comes ad revenue and mind numbing editorial.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's called enshittification

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

It's also somehow super-important to make sure the comments are set to auto-expand on the app. I'm confident the developers don't even use their own app.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Im so glad im not the only one experiencing this..

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Is there a way to turn it off again?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No clue but I hate it

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's Fucking terrible. It's one of my top complaints about reddit. Imgur is just moving that way

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sure would like to use this fucking app on a VPN but NOOOOOOO

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Its far more important to attract more malware and autoplay audio/pop up ads

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't this because of the Utah thing?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

What happened in Utah?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Utah passed a law that requires that websites with NSFW content verify users are 18 with ID checking.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ringfence Utah. Fuck Utah.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Utah has been saying that and doing nothing for decades. This decision came before Utah's I think. Both are really dumb.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Utah passed the law recently, hence why Pornhub is no longer available in Utah.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And VPN use is waaay up lol

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, which means that PornHub isn't liable for people going out of their way to access the site.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reducing storage used. Reducing some traffic. Cleansing the site to be a virgin bride for new advertisers.

2 years ago | Likes 190 Dislikes 7

Yeah but tossing all the lingerie out of the dowry. The real question is how much value is it to us, cause we are the reason for the advertisers. I should probably cancel my emerald....

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

As with most internet things, YOU are the resource... but you already knew that. The only solution is to not use mobile devices for imgur, install adblockers, and quit emerald (which gives YOU nothing). If ads do get thru to you, ignore the company when you next shop and post it here... many like me will upvote your efforts.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its the same thing Netflix, Disney et al are doing. Cutting their spending on the assumption that just existing is an infinite value they provide.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't stop the russian gta screenshot bots! Remove something that people actually like! Makes perfect sense!

2 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 5

Havent been in usersub for eons, so thats still a thing, huh

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mam, remember those late nights when the veil would fall and all the Russian GTA and illegal porn pics would show up on the front page? Shit was wild.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

You can't even repost things from random mode that made it to the front page several years ago without getting warnings now! Hopefully the next person will make another image sharing website so we can restart the cycle all over again

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Advertisers can go fuck themselves IMO

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is it. Since they got bought out, every change has been in favor of max'ing profits. This is just another step.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

Well, they ARE a company ..

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

brilliant insight sherlock

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've been down this route, it is a death spiral. Profitable ad exchanfes block sites that offend the offensensitive. Open minded ones pay a tiny fraction. The site's purpose is a honey pot for eyeballs to sell to ads. The eyeballs they've cultivated have a taste for vulgar honey and will go elsewhere, leaving the dwindling die hards to call plaintive into the ever quieting stillness. The soccer moms never come, the sense the vulgar musk and direct their sensitive snouts to the pure conf...

...confectionery sugar of dainty fingered sites free of the scuffs of modern primatives. So revenue fails and the harder they try to cleanse out that damned spot they merely more deeply flense till nothing remains but silent bones. Learn to host your own site, on your own hardware, run and help progress social federation tools. Take back your data from corporations. Run at a loss, yes, but tolerable to own your own voice, to speak freely. To never again pine the loss of your creativity gifted.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Are these the writings from an ancient internet prophecy

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Removing content that isn’t tied to a user account is going to nuke a mountain of images and gifs across the internet.

2 years ago | Likes 424 Dislikes 4

The Gif will finally be put to sleep. Sleep well, sweet prince.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oof…. i use so many of them

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have a gallery of four gifs that were uploaded by someone whom has gone MIA. Surely these magnificent upvote gifs would disappear into the nothingness when the purge commences. But luckily, I saved the gifs and uploaded them myself to preserve their majesty, and keep them available for use for years to come! /gallery/nHMddQi

2 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah. And the servers are going to get bombarded when people sign up, too.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why should Imgur keep paying to host that old data? Someone has to pay for it. Should Imgur pay for it forever?

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 23

Literally why they made the site to begin with.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Sure. But it was a bad business model, and not feasible long term. Good ideas don't pay their employees salaries.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

Historically, that is not true when other social media sites did the same.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Which one? Facebook forces everything to happen on their site - so they get the ad revenue.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

That was kind of the deal when they started the site, so yeah.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

That's not a sustainable business model though. At a certain point, that reality hits.

not necessarily. “not tied to active account” DOESNT include when those things are embedded in other sites, only when the IMGUR ACCOUNT ITSELF isn’t active and participatory in the imgur ecosystem.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

That has nothing to do with my point, but it seems like this isn't the crowd.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

your point was “the guides and old content wont disappear because they’re in use,” right? to which the counterpoint “they’re not ‘in use’ in the sense that imgur is using as a criterion for whether or not it gets deleted” makes sense, no?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Going the way of so many image hosts before them.

2 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 3

I specifically switched to imgur, because another image host I've forgotten the name of suddenly decided to delete everything.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Was it Imageshack?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It was! So many tutorials and other lengthy texts I wrote over the years lost their images and now the same will happen again, except at an even greater scale.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was specifically created in response to other image hosts doing this same thing. Now it's been sold to a corporate holding company and will be squeezed for all its worth.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

MediaLab is a notoriously shit and questionable company.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If the founder wanted his vision to be maintained he wouldn't have sold it. Tiny violin.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Remember, go to settings -> download account images. This will download a 22 byte broken zip file, which is of no use whatsoever.

nope, on desktop using chrome, same 22 byte zip file. oh well, I don't have any racy images in there, I just wanted a backup in case their script goes bonkers and wipes out random other images

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

just tried to download one of my albums, i got the same 22 byte file.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

hey account image download worked for me just now! First 3 failed partway through, but fourth try finally completed.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Progress! 621M and it seems to work.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do wish they'd throw in the favourite links, even if only the links.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Weird, I managed to download the full suite on wednesday. Mobile app issues maybe? (Worked on desktop)

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

This is on desktop

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I note as an aside that I find no way at all to do this on android.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here. Tried in FireFox and Edge, both failed.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can confirm for PC. Just that empty file. Looks like imgur's determined to go full tumblr on us.... :(

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ugh now I gotta write a script in python to download the images

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

. Care to share the script to download Imgur images or Imgur albums? Thanks! :)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't need it, image got their "settings -> download account images" tool to work. It took a couple of tries before it finished all the way, but it eventually did download all my images as one big zip file.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is the images you posted correct? Not the images in the posts in your favorites?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thats what im gonna do too i guess :(

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

share it here please

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

gonna check github, usually someone else has already written something

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Let me know if you find something that works if you get a chance. I tried ImgurToFolder already, but it hangs on my downloads so I'm trying to troubleshoot it ATM.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A couple of hours ago I got the settings -> download account images to work, took a couple of tries (failed on first 3) but I did get an entire zip download! I think it may just be super-busy
