I just saw them last month. ...IT! I mean it. Saw it. Saw...the movie. And then also it recommended Women in Cages, another one she was in. So I saw couple of hers. A pair, if you will. Arena I didn't really care for all that much, I oddly got drawn into Women in Cages more. She wasn't in that one much, though.
Pam Grier was (and probably still is) very sexy, but she was also an incredible actress. She could be a hero, a villain, a love interest, a badass or a mom (who is also a badass).
Last thing I saw her in was a sitcom called Bless This Mess. City couple moves onto a farm in a town called Bucksnort Nebraska.. (I think Nebraska) .. she’s a general store owner and sheriff.
She really shows range. Sexy, nervous, sweet and a mother. And still tough. She’s a treasure. Shame the show got canceled after two or three seasons.
Its a cult film at this point i think, despite being very panned. It has fun ideas, a genuinely great cast of near B-list actors and honestly, i think the character design and sets were cool as hell. Its weird to think Carpenter apparently wanted it to be the 3rd "Escape" film with Snake Pliskin (which im guessing could've been Ice Cube's character)
I honestly think it's up there with "The Thing" russel version, Alien, Event Horizon, and Hellraiser 2 in absolute pure genre definition. It's the best "Mars" based movie I have ever seen (like that Cowboy Bebob episode with the space lobster fridge). Stupidly, Doom with Carl Urban and Dwayne Johnson REALLY capture the exact same feel (and why THAT movie, and Prometheus for alien planet) are my fav scifi (Fifth Element FTW!)
Doom gets a lot of shit for not sticking exactly to the lore of "Doom" (rightly so in my opinion), but I still love it. If they called it something different and used different terms it would have been a great stand-alone sci-fi movie

She was going to marry Kareem Abdul Jabbar, but did not want to convert to Islam. So they ended it. Just a useless fact about her😂😂

If Pam Grier is going to be in a movie, I know it's going to be a movie I love.

I'm a straight woman so boobies aren't my thing, but still, this seems a bit much. Just not an attractive get up. She deserved better.

I’m finally maturing enough to realise this was not done in good taste.

Jesus Christ. I've never seen the movies but are the Blaxploitation films generally seen as a positive or negative by most black people?

Yes

There’s a great parody of the genre. It’s called Black Dynamite. Very funny. Very campy though. Electric lettuce helps.

The same concept as ARENA has been filmed several times.

The armor doesn’t look very practical
BloodLoveRhetoric
Arena armor is only decorative; the audience likes to see blood. And other things.
Knifesmith
Depends on what the goal is eh? Having grown up in the 70's, seeing Pam Grier wearing this armor certainly works for me :)

Director to propmaker: We need to add something to make it look gladitor-y but still show the boobies, you got ten minutes.

Loved her Ghosts of Mars. Weirdest scifi horror ever

Ok but...counter proposal for best Mars film: Total Recall.
varyael
Old one was good but nah, newer one wasn't mars at all so bleh. Red faction would make a great Mars movie, surprised it hasn't been adapted well
varyael
To be clear. Fav sci fi in order

1: fifth element
2: prometheus
3: ghosts of mars
4: doom
5: alien
varyael
Hard choice on alien, doom, and pandorum being 4/5/6 btw. Event horizon hard 7th
