We've done this already, we're still using early 20th century combustion engines in pretty much every vehicle.

Alternative title: "when you upgrade the rest of your army and forget about the troops"

Empire Earth... loved it

SS fantasized themselves as Teutonic warriors from the antiquity. Roman legions being mostly an invasion army must have felt appealing.
Bennerokss
I bet they don't have mechanisms that use a counterweight to launch 95kg stone projectiles over 300m

I've been looking for this anime :D
In civ VI you can advance from the classical era straight to the renaissance era skipping the medieval era entirely. So fucked up
peltsari
I've played two games with islands in a row, jesus I just find it stupid that the game informs me that someone just skipped medieval era
First time it happened to me I reloaded cause I was genuinely confused since Rome had been in the classical age the turn before.
drago1337
Wait... what? Even the fastest path in Civ V had you get compass during the medieval era.
It's beyond dumb, similar path (top) there's no medieval sailing tech you go from ship building (classical) to cartography (renaissance)
ColbyBrooks
Maybe they never discovered Christianity and thus the middle ages never happened.

Except that the rise of Christianity wasn't relevant to the transition from the classical to the Middle Ages?
Pretty much the main reason it occurred.
Or maybe it was the collapse of the Roman Empire? I find it funny I'm getting down voted for not blaming it on christians.
Pretty sure most of that is people thinking in Christian and trying to defend the faith, when I'm an atheist trying to defend history.
MorgothReigns
By all accounts, a disciplined Roman legion could've mopped up the motley armies of the medieval period.
HolyOldMackinaw
Debatable... heavy cavalry, longbowmen... stirrups, things the Romans hadn't encountered
Longbows possibly, but the battles in which "longbows won" by the English were more superior use of terrain than a better weapon.
Even heavy cavalry is only effective against an undisciplined infantry unit. Hastings, Norman knights barely beat exhausted shield wall.
Norman knights also proved highly effective against the Byzantines, who were certainly disciplined
Certainly by the time of the Fourth crusade they were. But remember this is about whether a classical unit could take on Medieval.
