Oh wow. I hope there’s a part 2. But then again, maybe leaving this story as-is makes it that much more beautiful :)

Not to be that guy, but... I think this is beautifully crafted fiction. Some of the details don't ring true.

Downtown Crossing as a name for that part of Boston did not come into use until the late 80’s.
I'm sure he smelled smoke during his service, but not in a pressurized B-52 cockpit at 40,000 feet.
The B-52s during Operation Linebacker II (the bombing of Hanoi in December 1972) carried anywhere from 66 to 108 bombs per mission, not 12.

The chill in the air is becoming more pointed, and the sky threatens rain, but that’s how he likes it. He used to take Ruth here, and later
Their children. Neisner’s is gone now, and so is his wife. The old flower shop mural is faded, but he still likes to walk here. And remember
He never saw her again. He’s an old man now, content to walk. To remember. His life, like all lives, was made up of moments, big and small.
And they’ve lead him here. Again. He stops, staring at the storefront. Remembering the swish of the toile in her dress.
Remember the warmth in his cheeks as he itches to trace the freckles and find the constellations of her.
“Hello, Richard.”

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am the thousand winds that blow. I am the softly falling snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awake in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds in circling flight. When you lay your head down at night, I create the silent starlight.
Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.
