The mortar platform went from above ground to underground.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's why you dig in your base plate

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm the medic for a mortar squad. I love when they let me fire the 120.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's one slow way to dig a hole

It's faster on the other end....

It takes me that way in the morning.

120mm mortar? I didn't even think we still used those.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a newer model. The older M30s were replaced in '91 or so, but 120mms are still widely used.

By this point, every single one of them should be permanently deaf. Lol

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

You forget doctor Krieger and his predeliction towards cybernetic parts.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

True. Then, at least Duchess should be permanently deaf because he is freaked out by Cyborgs. Lol

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He's also shipper narcissistic. He'd convince himself that he can do it, but nobody else can.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't you mean super?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im pretty sure there is a dirt squid that flew out from the blast

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If the bottom moves into the dirt like that, doesn't that change the trajectory?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is a shot to set the base, so they don't expect high accuracy. Once it's set the accuracy is much better.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So this is how they set/bury it when they're in a hurry. Fast prep and test aim in one

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, man, At My Command means he's gotta sit there holding that shell, arms extended, until a fire command is sent

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an 11C, yes. The joke was that the round was already on its way. Oops.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just curious...Why is the guy on the left leaning towards the artillery???...I would would be leaning the opposite way & about 20 ft over...

8 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 1

Cuz it's badass

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

He is leaning away from it but also away from camera so it doesn't look as far away.

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

"Left"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Safer there due to shock wave. Both are trained to "grab their ankle" after the round is tubed.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

OP has very similar training

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He has to reload it, he's instructed to stand there

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Also his job is to aim the mortar and re align it after each shot. The eyepiece is on his side. Generally you stay close to it.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Should've held the bipods.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Anyone know the range of these?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

120mm mortar, Max is 7200 meters if I'm not mistaken.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

About 4.5 miles for non-meter folks

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

81mm is 5400m, 60mm is 3490m

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Come see me in that self propelled paladin with a rocket assist round ;)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

30k range ish? What about a mlrs 300k

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's confirming the data on the sight which is how you aim it, he's the gunner and aims and manipulates the gun to different targets

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, given all the dirt it kicks, wouldn't it be safer for you eyes to look up? (serious question)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You want to watch down because there will pieces of hot metal residue falling from the air around the mortar.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also you suppose to wear protective eyepro (army issued ballistic glasses) that would prevent all that flying into your eyes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It wouldnt be and also you supposed to look down and away so debris don't mess you up, getting throat punched by a rock would hurt lol.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

also your supposed to wear safety glasses

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And with safety glasses they work best when you look at the source of debris. Otherwise it comes in the side more.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

does it legit take off when it hits the bottom?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Also as a country fan, I hope your username is sarcastic because that song should only be played to deaf people.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Or people who fire mortars .... same thing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As not a country fan, I hope you're being sarcastic about it, because country music should only be played to deaf people

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

As a deaf person... What? Speak up!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

-yells loudly- They say country sucks!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're selling what!?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, firing pin is at the bottom. Shell hits the bottom, pin does its job, kablammo.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

+1 for "kablammo".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

crazy, seems like there has to be a better way

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nukes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is. It's traditional artillery where the round is breach loaded & then hit with a firing pin. Mortars remove weight & complexity.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I suppose that makes sense, lighter weight and more reliable

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And fast! You can throw tons of shit very quickly with smaller mortars.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Theres plenty of ways, but this is the only way to do it in a compact, lightweight and portable manner

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Am I the only one who is really curious to know how you set up a mortar and aim it?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

(1/x) Your tube position is known. The bomb's ballistics are known. You aim at a stake while in direction X. You alter the position...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

(3/x) settings on the sight unit, then move the tube until the sight aims at the stake again. Drop bombs, they'll be on target. Ish.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

(2/x) of the barrel to alter the point of impact. Radio gives you a fire mission and a target point. There is math. You change the...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There's a thing called a wizard wheel, aiming stakes, setting (this gif) and a bunch of adjustments. I went infantry. Not as complicated.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I have a dumb question. I'm writing a book and for the sake of plot I need to know: how hard would it be to learn how to fire one? At

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

guerilla war "we just captured one of these" and aim it within reason. Not state trained well just well enough to make it plausible

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Within reason" is pretty vague. If you're talking anything larger than a 60mm mortar it's not really a "point and shoot" type of prospect

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and even for 60s you need some decent understanding of the concepts to "hand lay" a mortar w/o forward observer and fire direction center

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trial and error.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its pretty simple actually! there is a base plate at the bottom, the cannon, the bipod that holds it up, a sight,-

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

and aiming stakes so you stay on target. aiming it is the hard part and involves alot of technical data and sometimes computers. but-

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

a skilled gunner can have the gun ready (up) somewhere between 15-30 seconds to start firing rounds. id go into detail but its complicated.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

also side note they took the sight off because the 1st round you fire will break it from all of the sudden movement.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I love your response. "it's pretty simple... But it's complicated." quite the roller coaster! (having fired these, I do agree with you!)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's simple if you've been trained to do it. Not simple if you're untrained. Also you need good FDC and FOs if you hope to hit anything.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You just eye ball it and hope for the best

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You want civilian casualties? Cause that's how you get civilian casualties.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well, they shouldnt be standing there

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You don't call in mortars when you want "precise". You call them when you want "That whole spot over there dead".

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's the best way to describe it that I can think of.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Is that mortar secure, Private?" "It is now, sir!"

LE-LE-LET THE BASS DROP.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

"But we gotta aim again"

8 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 0

This is normal way to secure it after setting it up. Wait for results from the scouts.Make corrections.Next shots will be steady and on spot

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Remind me what aiming is again..."

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Tactical prevension of collateral damage.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The term "acceptable casualties" applies here

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's a marine somewhere holding back a rant about aiming.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I imagine that a mortar that big only needs to be within 50 feet of what they want to hit. Not an explosives expert though.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jesus that looks bad for your health.

8 years ago | Likes 441 Dislikes 5

Warfare generally is

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You think its bad for their health, think about how bad it is for the people on the receiving end

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Joint pain, head injury, etc. Shockwaves are terrible for the body.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

You should see the other guy

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Nahh. After a while your ear drums are relaxed enough, so you need to cover your ears, later earplugs aren't even needed.....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Surprisingly, I didn't get permanent damage. Except firecrackers that go boom aren't really impressive anymore.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And thats why we should be paying for them after they put in their time. They destroy their bodies so we dont have to.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Always wear ear protection.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Wait ..so like ear rubbers?

I told you baby, I'm clean..

Yeah, I got a chance to "ride the base plate" once. Never felt anything like it before or since.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Did you have any protection for your hearing?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah two layers of ear pro but being that close the thump in your chest is crazy.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was my first thought. Been out for a few years and would love to ride that baseplate again.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a guaranteed 10% medical rating

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

10% medical rating?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

$133.25 a month for the rest of your life for constant ringing in your ears.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When you leave the military, you have a percentage score for how "disabled" you got during service. Some injuries give more than others. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

The hearing loss mortor crews get is 10%, if you lose a finger it's like 25%. You add the numbers together, and that's the percentage

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Of your base pay you get for the rest of your life, if you meet a certain threshold

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Far as I was told by VA, hearing loss is no longer considered

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The VA will lie and cheat you as much as possible most people give up rather than fighting.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Really? Does that mean those who already had a claim will no longer keep their rating?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Idea, just what I was told when applying back in 96

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's also possible that they were just being asshats

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a mortar and didn't get that :|

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think you have to be human to qualify for benefits.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure I follow

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you get diagnosed with anything? I have bilateral hearing loss and tinnitus

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I sadly went to sick call only once and the ER once, so apparently that means I never had anything wrong with me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here, hardly ever went to sickcall and just powered through. Bought pills if I had to. Told the VA my issues and a 3rd party checked me

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stupid question, buttfuckit, do modern artillery crews use hearing protection?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't speak for the artillery guys but even on the 120 mortar I was comfortable using my fingers as ear pro

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

/a/RwYst using basic ear pro here, also excuse the extreme flexibility

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
