Debut is the first international solo studio album by Icelandic recording artist Björk. The album was released in July 1993 by One Little Indian and Elektra Records, and was produced by Björk in collaboration with artist Nellee Hooper. It was her first recording following the dissolution of her previous band, the Sugarcubes. The album departed from the rock style of her previous work and instead drew on an eclectic variety of styles including electronic pop, house music, jazz and trip hop.

Debut received critical acclaim from British music critics, though United States reviews were more mixed. The album sold better than her label had predicted, charting at number three in the United Kingdom and 61 in the US. It was certified gold in Canada and platinum in the US, where it remains her best-selling album.

Five singles were released from Debut: "Human Behaviour", "Venus as a Boy", "Play Dead", "Big Time Sensuality" and "Violently Happy". All five singles charted in the UK, with only "Human Behaviour", "Violently Happy" and "Big Time Sensuality" charting on dance and modern rock charts in the US.

Siamese Dream is the second studio album by American rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, released on July 27, 1993 on Virgin Records. The album fused diverse influences such as shoegazing, dream pop, heavy metal and progressive rock.

Despite recording sessions fraught with difficulties and tensions, Siamese Dream debuted at number ten on the Billboard charts, and eventually sold over four million copies in the US, and over six million worldwide, cementing The Smashing Pumpkins as an important group in alternative rock music. Four singles were released in support of Siamese Dream: "Cherub Rock", "Today", "Disarm", and "Rocket".

In addition to receiving mostly positive reviews upon its release, Siamese Dream has widely been regarded as one of the best albums of the 1990s, and one of the best albums of all time. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 362 on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

In Utero is the third and final studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 21, 1993, by DGC Records. Nirvana intended for the record to diverge significantly from the polished production of its previous album, Nevermind (1991). To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The music was recorded quickly in a period of two weeks with few studio embellishments, and the song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame.

Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated in the press that DGC might not release the album in its original state, as the record label felt that the result was not commercially viable. Although Nirvana publicly denied the statements, the band opted to remix parts of the album. Albini declined to alter the album further, and ultimately the band hired R.E.M. producer Scott Litt to make minor changes to the album's sound and remix the singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies".

Upon release, In Utero entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and received critical acclaim as a drastic departure from Nevermind. The record has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold 15 million copies worldwide.

Doggystyle is the debut studio album by American rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg. It was released on November 23, 1993, by Death Row Records and Interscope Records. The album was recorded and produced following Snoop's appearances on Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic (1992), to which Snoop contributed significantly. The West Coast style in hip-hop that he developed from Dre's first album continued on Doggystyle. Critics have praised Snoop Doggy Dogg for the lyrical "realism" that he delivers on the album and for his distinctive vocal flow. Despite some mixed criticism of the album initially upon its release, Doggystyle earned recognition from many music critics as one of the most significant albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the most important hip-hop albums ever released. Much like The Chronic, the distinctive sounds of Doggystyle helped introduce the hip-hop subgenre of g-funk to a mainstream audience, bringing forward West Coast hip hop as a dominant force in the early-1990s.

Doggystyle debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 806,858 copies in its first week alone in the United States, which was the record for a debuting artist and the fastest-selling hip-hop album ever. Doggystyle was included on The Source magazine's list of the 100 Best Rap Albums; as well as Rolling Stone magazine's list of Essential Recordings of the '90s.

Black Sunday is the second studio album by American hip hop group Cypress Hill, released on July 20, 1993 by Ruffhouse and Columbia Records. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 261,000 copies in its first week of sales and becoming the highest Soundscan recording for a rap group at the time. The album went Triple platinum in the U.S., with 3.4 million units sold.

Pablo Honey is the debut studio album by the English alternative rock band Radiohead, released on 22 February 1993. The album's title comes from a Jerky Boys prank call skit in which the prank caller says to his victim, "Pablo, honey? Please come to Florida!" This is sampled on the song "How Do You?" which is the third track on the album.

The album received a favourable reception from critics, but some criticized its grunge sound as derivative and found certain songs underdeveloped. The work is often held in a negative light in comparison to the band's subsequent studio albums, though some retrospectives are positive toward it. The album produced three charting singles, "Anyone Can Play Guitar", "Stop Whispering", and perhaps the band's most well-known hit on mainstream radio, "Creep". Pablo Honey peaked at #22 on the UK Albums Chart, and was certified platinum in the UK and other countries

Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is the debut studio album by the American hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan, released November 9, 1993, on Loud Records and distributed through RCA Records. Recording sessions for the album took place during 1992 to 1993 at Firehouse Studio in New York City, and it was mastered at The Hit Factory. The album's title originates from the martial arts film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978). The group's de facto leader RZA produced the album entirely, utilizing gritty, eerie beats and a sound largely based on martial-arts movie clips and soul music samples.

The distinctive sound of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) created a blueprint for hardcore hip hop during the 1990s and helped return New York City hip hop to national prominence. Its sound also became greatly influential in modern hip hop production, while the group members' explicit, humorous, and free-associative lyrics have served as a template for many subsequent hip hop records. Serving as a landmark record in the era of hip hop known as the East Coast Renaissance, its influence helped lead the way for several other East Coast hip hop artists, including Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and Jay-Z.

Despite its raw, underground sound, the album had surprising chart success, peaking at #41 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 30,000 copies in the 1st week. By 1995, it was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and has sold over 2 million copies in the United States.[1] Initially receiving positive reviews from most music critics, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is widely regarded as one of the most significant albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever.

Buhloone Mindstate is the third studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul. It was released in 1993 and was the group's last record to be produced with Prince Paul.

At the end of 1993, Buhloone Mindstate was voted the eighth best album of the year in the Pazz & Jop, an annual poll of American critics nationwide, published by The Village Voice. Robert Christgau, the poll's creator and supervisor, ranked it fifth best on his own year-end list. In a contemporary review, Rolling Stone critic Paul Evans said the record was more focused than De La Soul's previous albums and also more ambitious sonically: "Musically, Buhloone Mind State raises the stakes; it gets to something rap seldom achieves — a truly gorgeous groove." In 2005, comedian Chris Rock named it the 10th greatest hip hop record of all time in a list published by Rolling Stone.

Unplugged is a 1993 album by Eric Clapton, recorded at Bray Studios, England in front of an audience for the MTV Unplugged series. Recorded in January 1992, and released in August, songs include a version of the successful 1991 single "Tears in Heaven" and an acoustic version of "Layla".

Critical reception has been mostly positive and most critics feel the album is "relaxed" and "charming". It remains the most successful and best-selling live album ever, winning two Grammy awards at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards in 1993. It is also Clapton's best-selling album ever, having sold 26 million copies worldwide

What albums did I miss?? Anything I should've included here?

Pablo Honey was the last album I bought on cassette. Never really felt old until I typed that. Gosh, thanks.

Ahh yes, I remember when the Sugarcubes dissolved.

Nirvana had more than three studio albums. There was Bleach, Nevermind, Insecticide and In Utero. Plus anything I've forgotten.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe Insecticide is a b-sides compilation

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I, too, was released in 1993. July 2, 1993 to be exact. Released from my mother I mean. Her womb specifically.

Your dad released into her 9 months earlier. You do what you will with that knowledge.

Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid by Collective Soul?

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Great album, but Collective Soul is often overlooked since they showed up late to the 90s alt-rock party.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is my adolescence. I guess I was very fortunate.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pearl Jam's Vs. was also released in 1993.

8 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 2

How'd I miss that? Nice save

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Unpopular opinion, pearl Jam is overrated. Could never understand the hype after all these years.

They fucking suck

Greenday's Dookie album was also '93 I think. Back when they were good. "She" being one of my all time favourite tracks.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Dookie was 94, and 94 was also an awesome year for music! Offspring, Hole, Weezer, and a shit ton more...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I stand corrected. But you're right, good time for music.

I already know I'm old, op. Thanks for reminding me.

Make sure you follow the ToolArchive channel on YouTube. There's been a handful of album updates recently. Frothing!

I won't believe anything til I'm holding it. There's been teasers for years

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

1993 was the pinnacle of both hip hop and alternagrunge. It was a megayear, like 1985 before it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Undertow came out in 93 by probably the best and most intelligent rock band Tool

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

As a 26 year old, I find that most of the music I enjoy is from the 90s.

Theyve started playing nirvana, red hot chili peppers, Green Day, blink 182, foo fighters on the local Classic Rock station. Stresses me out

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Our classic rock station still stops at ZZ Top. Nothing newer than about the early 80s. I wish they'd go into the 90s.

Jesus christ, I remember buying both Use Your Illusion albums 27 years ago with pocket money and hiding them from my parents.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I still wouldn't play 'My World' for my parents. That shit's messed up.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno, mine were most displeased when they discovered "Get in the Ring"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also a classic. I mostly just remember wondering who Bob Guccione Jr. was and how he had earned Axl's ire.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice list! Midnight Marauders-A Tribe Called Quest; August and Everything After-Counting Crows; Return of the Boom Bap-KRSOne; Music-311

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

+1 for 311

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's making me feel old is all these bands from the 90s are starting to be played on classic rock radio stations. Where did 25 years go?

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

This is why I listen to the station that plays classic and modern rock. Hard to remember how old a song is when it's mixed in with stuff

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

from the past 50 years or so (yes, Black Sabbath was formed in 1968).

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Counting Crows, "August and Everything After" was released in 1993.

It's a shame Billy Corgan is a massive douche. #2 was an excellent album.

8 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 5

You're a douche! The man speaks his mind, and stands by his beliefs 100%.. Like we all should.. makes some damn good points..so piss off..

I ran into him in his tea shop in Highland Park, IL just playing piano and singing to no one. He was kind to us when we sat and listened.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I saw them at Leeds festival. They played the US national anthem and the crowd started wrecking everything. He walked off. Dick!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fun fact the girl on right in the Siamese Dream cover grew up to play in the band.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not denying he’s a douche. But he did have a pretty messed up childhood....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He had a store on reverb.com if you wanted to buy his old music gear. Bit over priced in my opinion, even if you were buying it for history

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are rumors that Smashing will reunite for a new album

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The album has finished recording. They just announced a US tour with original guitarist and drummer and Billy obviously

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They accepted Chamberlain?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Accepted? He's worked with Billy since Machina in 1999

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha. I have to admit I haven't followed Corgan after they broke up. I'll have some catching up to do ;P

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm his biggest fan and even i know it. His recent solo album is amazing (not for everyone tho)

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I agree on his latest album. I was surprised and even relieved. It's been so long since he's published anything worthwhile.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep same. I expected to have to be a bit forgiving. But it's a real album. And you can hear how much more effort he put into his performance

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

D'arcy, James & Jimmy have all told many stories about how much of an egomaniac he is.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Wow 1993 was a pretty good year for music.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I know I had a pretty good time, at least from what I remember.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
