I was driving a humvee north on 60th street in mulhalla 824 in the Al Doura district of Iraq. The bomb exploded under the engine, lucky for me and the other two dudes in the truck. If it had exploded even a second later, all three of us would have been killed. This is the hood of that truck. I found it in the motor pool a few days after the incident, and I still have it in my garage.

I remember the boom, the truck rising into the air, my head hitting the roof, and then the is a lapse in time I have no recollection of. I don't know how long it lasted or what happened during that time, but I was told I was out for a few seconds. I came to hearing the truck commander calling up to the LT over that radio that I was dead, and I remember thinking, "well that sucks."

The engine was fucked. There was mud and soot and all kinds of engine fluids all over everything in the truck, and it smelled like burning sewage. I started feeling the gunner all over his body looking for blood, but I didn't find any. Later we learned he had broken his nose on his SAW.

I tried to continue driving, but the truck wouldn't move and I didn't understand why. I figured I should shift into drive, not computing the fact that I was *just* driving. The shifter was gone, and where it once was lay my M4, bent nearly at a 45 degree angle. The only thing I could think to do was press the gas again.

Another truck dragged us out of the area. My LT pulled me aside, and I now know what he was going to say because in a subsequent deployment I felt a lot of guilt as a leader, too. But before he could speak, shots rang out, and the moment passed. We're still friends to this day.

He wrote a book about our tour and titled it "Dead Rabbits", which was our platoon name.

Unrelated- This is my grandfather's plane from WWII. He was a tail gunner in a B25 weather plane. This is just a cool picture.

Dog tax. This is Mac. He passed away a year ago. He was a good boy.

Big badda boom.

You exploded, heard someone say you were dead, and tried to just continue on driving? Man, shock is one hell of a drug.

Well this was a bomb-ass story (im so lonely)

One of the last IEDs I was involved with, our gunner got a piece of shrapnel in the ass. He still managed to lay down bomb-ass cover fire.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I joined in March of 06, was in Iraq by October.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did your platoon land on dead rabbits as your platoon name @OP?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

From the movie "Gangs of New York", I believe. But that was the established name when I got there.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

"Well that sucks" classic

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I try to be part of it.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What was you LT gonna say??

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Couldn't tell you the exact words, but I know he was feeling a huge measure of guilt. Honestly, it was more what he was going to do than say

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you're still with us. Thank you for your service Sir.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

seems like they are pretty well designed if they can take a blast like that and still have everyone inside be alive. holy shit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For real!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I applaud your attitude, and thank you for sharing this with us all. BAMF.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Glad you made it back, bro. Take care of yourself, and others.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What did the LT say?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He didn't say anything. He got cut off by shooting before he could speak. I imagine he wanted to say the things I've wanted to say to 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2/2 the men I led into danger who were nearly killed on my second tour. Leadership guilt weighs heavy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because you actually give a shit, not implying that's rare but an important quality to have imo, kudo's sir

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for being brave.

Brave, dumb, sometimes the same thing, honestly.

Were you at Falcon? I was there in 06

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I was in 2-12 infantry. At falcon freon October 06 through the end of December 07.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No way! I was there with 2-506th, we were Nov 05-Nov 06, you guys replaced us.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We did! I remember the 101 guys giving us stuff they didn't want to take home, haha!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Happy anniversary. Crazy how war is a game of inches.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It's funny, because that lesson was beaten into me several times over my tours.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

;) so good times for everyone?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha! Always.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Truck looks pretty good. Most of the humvees I saw hit IEDs in AFG were missing everything in front of and behind the cab or just pancaked.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gratz on not being tomato soup buddy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It hit under the engine, so we got lucky. There were far bigger IEDs that hit others.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, like I said, glad you made it out of that deathtrap. By time I was running convoys they mostly banned humvees outside the wire

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, @OP congrats on not dying! I'm glad you survived an IED. Thank you for your service sir.

And I was just a mechanic in the AF but we still had our part in the mission

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

I'm am infantryman, and I never downplay the importance of other jobs. Some of the most important soldiers are cooks and generator mechanics

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

The army is a well oiled machine, and if just one cog from it disappeared, it would stop functioning. No matter what the function of it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for your service. Glad you survived. HNY.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Try Scott Flanigan "Dead Rabbits" on amazon or something. That should work without staining your memory forever.

That did it. Thanks for everything!

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

not a selfie if its taken by someone else brother man.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

My husband's family live in Al Doura. They've been kidnapped, bombed by rebels, and his brother drove for the US troops for a while.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's that was a hard place.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was this on loyalty?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Falcon. Probably the same kind of building, considering KBR monopolized the contacts.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Humvee looked firmilar, I was on loyalty attached to 2/2 and the first one I saw hit was an efp that did something similar

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, ok. I was in 2-12 infantry, but that was just the vehicle number.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, I'm glad you made it through.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You too, we rallied through yards and muhallahs avoided all major roads 15 months no issues.
