I was driving a humvee north on 60th street in mulhalla 824 in the Al Doura district of Iraq. The bomb exploded under the engine, lucky for me and the other two dudes in the truck. If it had exploded even a second later, all three of us would have been killed. This is the hood of that truck. I found it in the motor pool a few days after the incident, and I still have it in my garage.
I remember the boom, the truck rising into the air, my head hitting the roof, and then the is a lapse in time I have no recollection of. I don't know how long it lasted or what happened during that time, but I was told I was out for a few seconds. I came to hearing the truck commander calling up to the LT over that radio that I was dead, and I remember thinking, "well that sucks."
The engine was fucked. There was mud and soot and all kinds of engine fluids all over everything in the truck, and it smelled like burning sewage. I started feeling the gunner all over his body looking for blood, but I didn't find any. Later we learned he had broken his nose on his SAW.
I tried to continue driving, but the truck wouldn't move and I didn't understand why. I figured I should shift into drive, not computing the fact that I was *just* driving. The shifter was gone, and where it once was lay my M4, bent nearly at a 45 degree angle. The only thing I could think to do was press the gas again.
Another truck dragged us out of the area. My LT pulled me aside, and I now know what he was going to say because in a subsequent deployment I felt a lot of guilt as a leader, too. But before he could speak, shots rang out, and the moment passed. We're still friends to this day.
He wrote a book about our tour and titled it "Dead Rabbits", which was our platoon name.
Unrelated- This is my grandfather's plane from WWII. He was a tail gunner in a B25 weather plane. This is just a cool picture.
Dog tax. This is Mac. He passed away a year ago. He was a good boy.
mi17ke
Big badda boom.
HailTheFSM
Goddam that's tense. I'm glad you're here to tell the tale.
PizzaPringler
Thank you.
CliffyWeevil
You exploded, heard someone say you were dead, and tried to just continue on driving? Man, shock is one hell of a drug.
PizzaPringler
Exactly.
staticBabyMonitor
Well this was a bomb-ass story (im so lonely)
Somnophobe
One of the last IEDs I was involved with, our gunner got a piece of shrapnel in the ass. He still managed to lay down bomb-ass cover fire.
PizzaPringler
No, it was good! You did a great job, haha!
Jubilara
He fight for better reasons.... I'm glad that you are ok...
TacticalSergeant
Appreciate your sacrifice brother. Also, doggo looks like a good boy as well. -Fellow service member
PizzaPringler

Sweet Max! When you feel ready, hope you get another doggo.
PizzaPringler
I really want to. My wife isn't down for that yet, so we'll see what happens.

Muhalla 651 here. Ghazaliya Baghdad 06-08. Welcome to the surge.
PizzaPringler
Yeah, I joined in March of 06, was in Iraq by October.
Chewthestitches
How did your platoon land on dead rabbits as your platoon name @OP?
PizzaPringler
From the movie "Gangs of New York", I believe. But that was the established name when I got there.
ChaseGray89
"Well that sucks" classic
atesomebadfugu

Hmmm. That sounds like solid advice.
imapersonandmynameisanakin
It really applies to almost any situation
PizzaPringler
I'll do my best, hehehe.
atesomebadfugu
love ya, man. you're what makes our country great.
PizzaPringler
I try to be part of it.
NotifweJammit
What was you LT gonna say??
PizzaPringler
Couldn't tell you the exact words, but I know he was feeling a huge measure of guilt. Honestly, it was more what he was going to do than say
NotifweJammit
I'm glad you're still with us. Thank you for your service Sir.
PizzaPringler
Thank you.
fuckyourmuminherass69
seems like they are pretty well designed if they can take a blast like that and still have everyone inside be alive. holy shit
PizzaPringler
For real!
DonIsMe
I applaud your attitude, and thank you for sharing this with us all. BAMF.
ImSorryChampIThinkIAteYourChocolateSquirrel
Glad you made it back, bro. Take care of yourself, and others.
PizzaPringler
Thank you.
Notanotherdamnone
What did the LT say?
PizzaPringler
He didn't say anything. He got cut off by shooting before he could speak. I imagine he wanted to say the things I've wanted to say to 1/2
PizzaPringler
2/2 the men I led into danger who were nearly killed on my second tour. Leadership guilt weighs heavy.
DanGtp
Because you actually give a shit, not implying that's rare but an important quality to have imo, kudo's sir
donimals
Thank you for being brave.
PizzaPringler
Brave, dumb, sometimes the same thing, honestly.

PriestofThor
Were you at Falcon? I was there in 06
PizzaPringler
Yeah. I was in 2-12 infantry. At falcon freon October 06 through the end of December 07.
PriestofThor
No way! I was there with 2-506th, we were Nov 05-Nov 06, you guys replaced us.
PizzaPringler
We did! I remember the 101 guys giving us stuff they didn't want to take home, haha!
IsntThisWhereWeCameIn
Happy anniversary. Crazy how war is a game of inches.
PizzaPringler
It's funny, because that lesson was beaten into me several times over my tours.
tyrsfavoritesword
;) so good times for everyone?
PizzaPringler
Haha! Always.
tyrfin
Truck looks pretty good. Most of the humvees I saw hit IEDs in AFG were missing everything in front of and behind the cab or just pancaked.
tyrfin
Gratz on not being tomato soup buddy.
PizzaPringler
It hit under the engine, so we got lucky. There were far bigger IEDs that hit others.
tyrfin
Well, like I said, glad you made it out of that deathtrap. By time I was running convoys they mostly banned humvees outside the wire
Bluejay0013
Wow, @OP congrats on not dying! I'm glad you survived an IED. Thank you for your service sir.
PizzaPringler
Thank you, but I do not deserve your gratitude. I'm just a guy.
rubbarz
Standing in front of a girl...
PizzaPringler
Haha! Awesome.
LittleDragon
Just a guy with a pizza?
PizzaPringler
Pizza Pringles.
andyskeels
Good enough.

Bluejay0013
And I was just a mechanic in the AF but we still had our part in the mission
PizzaPringler
I'm am infantryman, and I never downplay the importance of other jobs. Some of the most important soldiers are cooks and generator mechanics
MandalorianMerc13
The army is a well oiled machine, and if just one cog from it disappeared, it would stop functioning. No matter what the function of it.
PizzaPringler
Agreed.
thelostg
Thanks for your service. Glad you survived. HNY.
PizzaPringler
You as well!
nerdparatrooper
What BDE of 2ID?
PizzaPringler
2nd, when they were at Fort Carson before reflagging to 4th BDE 4th ID.
nerdparatrooper
Gotcha. Spent 4 years with 3-2.
PizzaPringler
Nice. I know a lot of guys that came from Lewis that are now in my SBCT.
nerdparatrooper
I'm going back to JBLM in May, just not to the SBCT side
PizzaPringler
I hear it's a good post. Best of luck!
ConcertsAreProzac
Thank god you survived. Hell of a story to tell. Going to see if I can check out the book and read it.
PizzaPringler
Cool!
ConcertsAreProzac
History was my minor. So I like reading about what the courses didn't cover.
Morgan96
Yes!! Good way to put it. I wish more ppl filled in the blanks like OP does
ConcertsAreProzac
I agree!

Worst minesweeper player ever.
PizzaPringler

PizzaPringler

PigsWeGetWhatPigsDeserve

PizzaPringler
I'll see what I can do!
PigsWeGetWhatPigsDeserve
Cool!
jcraig919
I'd like to read the book, but don't want to google "Dead Rabbits" haha
PizzaPringler
Try Scott Flanigan "Dead Rabbits" on amazon or something. That should work without staining your memory forever.
jcraig919
That did it. Thanks for everything!
PizzaPringler
No sweat!
RightInThePleb
How much was it it sounds like an interesting read
PizzaPringler
I'm not sure. I bought a few copies as gifts a few years ago, but I forget what the price was.
MrSkar
$15 new, $12 used off amazon

PizzaPringler
Also, sorry for the first picture. It wasn't a selfie on purpose.
CodyHoward147
not a selfie if its taken by someone else brother man.
whooshby
My husband's family live in Al Doura. They've been kidnapped, bombed by rebels, and his brother drove for the US troops for a while.
PizzaPringler
It's that was a hard place.
JuisSloshJuis
Was this on loyalty?
PizzaPringler
Falcon. Probably the same kind of building, considering KBR monopolized the contacts.
JuisSloshJuis
The Humvee looked firmilar, I was on loyalty attached to 2/2 and the first one I saw hit was an efp that did something similar
PizzaPringler
Oh, ok. I was in 2-12 infantry, but that was just the vehicle number.
PizzaPringler
Also, I'm glad you made it through.
JuisSloshJuis
You too, we rallied through yards and muhallahs avoided all major roads 15 months no issues.
