Mr. Bean

Mr Bean makes more sense than this

I like the backup car in the background

I still cant believe all this incredible comedy was packed in one season.

A friend of mine, with the exact model of mini in red, would mount the curb, drive AROUND the traffic light on the pavement, enter the traffic on the cross road with the light on green and turn left to continue onward. Anyone who's ever driven in an original mini will know it's a wild ride, they're just a go-kart with a roof!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Totally impossible scenario - people on bikes neither stop or dismount on red lights. They just go through

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why can I tell it's Mr Bean from the applause?

Is that a spare Mr Bean mini in the background?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Does not haves a black bonnet/hood, there are several minis in shot, they were incredibly popular only going out of production in 2000, it’s replacement the mini metro went out of production in 1998 :)

Here in the US we're just allowed to take a right on red. That's just a thing that you're allowed to do.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

One of the few really logical parts of the US driving code.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I moved from the UK to Canada. Being able to turn right on red took me so long to get used to.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There will a sign. Sometimes you can’t turn right on red here in ol’ Canada. The Top Gear where they went to Florida and the South is my favourite episode. I’m Canadian but live in NYC most of the year for work. Night & day. The States are insane haha

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's only 14 episodes of Mr Bean.

Boooo to you

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I still find it fascinating that left turn on red (keeping in mind that they drive on the wrong side of the road) isn't a thing in the UK. Or at least it wasn't the last time I checked.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Nope, red is red. You never go through one. On the other hand the stupid rule some US states have that you must come to a dead stop at junctions doesn't exist here. At junctions, roundabouts, mini roundabouts etc you don't even have to slow down if you can see the way is clear.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I find the varying rules in the US weird. In Europe, a red light means stop. Always stop. If they want to allow a turn in one direction while stoppiong forward traffic they have filter lights like this:

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Right on red is great for traffic. It keeps cars moving, but it's a bitch for cars trying to merge on to the roads as there are no breaks in traffic.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

more and more cities that have had it are getting rid of right on red. interesting enough Indianapolis wanted to get rid of it and the state passed a law prohibiting them from banning right on red. Really with modern adaptive traffic control systems there is no need for right on red.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What? Why? Right on red is efficient. If it's clear, no traffic or pedestrians in a crosswalk, what could possibly be gained by making the driver wait?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right turn on red is a car-centric nightmare that kills people, to save a few impatient fucks a few seconds.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

No, idiot drivers who don't look where they're going kill people. Right turn on red is efficiency.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Found the impatient fuck.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice, right to name-calling, how very mature. But I guess I can forgive you for it since there aren't any logical arguments to counter my point with.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

probably what causes there to be intersections with no crosswalks and signs prohibiting crossing. There is one near me where if you are on a certain corner, both road directions have a do not cross sign and I legit have no clue what a cop would do if you did cross because you have to cross a no crossing to get to a crosswalk for either road. I feel like if someone took that to court they could win.

I did this once with a motorbike, got warned by a police officer. What did I learn? I can only do that if the engine is turned off.

2 years ago | Likes 446 Dislikes 1

Or when the police aren't watching...

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had to think about it a minute. Right on red isn't illegal here (Left on red in opposite land.)

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Left in red is legal when signed. Roundabouts often have a left cut lane.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In some parts of the US, left on red is legal too! Usually on one way streets.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Here anything on wheels counts as a vehicle.

In many (most?) US states, bicycles and other similar vehicles can use the crosswalk, even if the vehicle lane has a red light. (Technically they're supposed to stop first, just like cars are supposed to stop before making a turn-on-red. But don't bet on either actually happening.)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not in PA. Bikes must follow the same exact rules as motor vehicles

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if there is a traffic light with a sensor that only turns green if there is a car waiting? Sometimes they don't detect the bike. Do they have to wait for a car to come before they can go?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They aren't programmed that way. They still have a time component programmed in too. Also we have a law that let's you treat a red light that is suspected of not working as a four way

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i couldn't imagine driving on the wrong side of the road like that. ...most people are right-handed, right-footed, walk on the right, drive on the right. ...why be backwards & wrong??? makes NO sense at all??

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 11

Yes, most are right handed, which historically made it easier on horseback to stay on the left so you would be able to draw your sword. There's more to it; read this: https://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Why-do-the-British-drive-on-the-left/ It also explains why it made more sense for North America to change & be the “backwards” one. And yes, most are right footed too, which is why the accelerator/gas pedal is still pressed with your right foot, regardless of which side of the road you're on.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

(if you're right-handed, you're right-footed too) (& left-handed = left-footed) ...& it's still easier & better to drive on the right. that clip shows how driving on the left is so unneccesarily complicted for no reason)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Having spent 30 years in the UK and 10 years in Canada, I can say that neither is easier than the other. The roads are different, and rules of the road apply differently as a result. Once you’ve adjusted to the directional differences, then driving is driving. I find the biggest challenge is to do with traffic lights and traffic light rules than which side of the road you’re on.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

@TheElliotPage I think the issue you’re getting at isn’t that one is easier than the other, but more that you were taught one way and to have to adjust to drive on the other side of the road is harder to conceptualize as a result. That’s something that works both ways because I remember the challenge of that adjustment period. But once you adjust and the muscle memory kicks in, then it’s all the same.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

not at all. it's like my cousin, i'm right-handed, he is wrong-handed. Doing something wrong, like driving on the left & muscle memory doesn't mean it's correct. Its still wrong & dumb. Do Europeans walk on the left side? No, they walk/pass on the right side, which is right. ...stop being an anarchist, you evil troublemaker.

That's gotta be a Mr Bean bit

Did Mr. Bean give it away?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wasnt there when I made the comment

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He wasn’t in the video? He’s driving/walking the car.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Look below the video

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What gave it away?

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

Op must have done an edit because I didn't see the mr bean when I made this comment

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Don't worry about it. It probably just didn't load right on first viewing. Happens.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The lime green mini

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Mr. Bean, probably.

Well you don't really get a good look at him in this bit, but the car is a dead giveaway

Oh my! So many vehicles that are no longer seen on the roads! A Mk3 Escort, Mk2 Astra, Granada, Mk2 Cavalier, Mk2 Fiesta, Mk2 Golf.

2 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 2

There was a Morris marina/ ital van opposite at the end. I had one as a project car that never really got off the ground. So sad o never got it back on the road

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is hard to believe that these cars existed at the same time as the Peugeot 205, which still shows up today.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had some of them

Forf sierra

Ford* FML!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cortina Mk4, Peugeot 309, Mk2 Escort Estate, the boxy Transit, another green Mini!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And a Nissan Sunny. But what's even rarer is a cyclist stopping at a red light

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the car that blue/grey car right in front on him was a Saab 900.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yup, it sure was.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So Mk#X type vehicles arent allowed on the road anymore?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No they all rusted out or died by now, any still running would be ~30 years old.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry to disappoint you but 30 years ago was 90s and these are older. Yes, we are old

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're allowed, they're just old and most of them have gone to the junkyard.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure its a MkV Cortina, not a Granada

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's both, dark blueccar turning right is Granada, gold car near start is Cortina. God I'm old.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. Didn't see the blue one...I was focused on the gold one!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Turning vehicle right when traffic stops I think is a Toyota Cressida

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I thought it Might be a Nissan Bluebird but neither the Toyota or Nissan have the flat rear arch. Somewhere in the recesses of my mind a small voice is saying "Subaru" but I think it's wrong.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's definitely Japanese, whatever it is. Mitsubishi maybe? Not sure, doesn't look like anything I remmeber seeing in the US market...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's been bugging me so much that instead of sleeping like a normal person I instead have been pouring over 1980's saloon cars. I think it may be a Mitsubishi Galant circa 1985?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It is a Mitsubishi Galant.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's very similar to a Proton Saga

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn you right. 1980/90s saloon cars are awesome. Cressida is one I am on the look out for altho I have a AE86 deal might be too good to pass.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh yea, never miss an opportunity to own an AE86! By the time I was of age to buy one the Irish had snapped them all up from the UK as they used them for road rallying.
