In Garden City, Ks 30 years ago, it would go off at noon. New comers would ask about it and we would tell them that was to announce that they were driving cattle up Main Street to the stock yards. Everyone had to get off the streets.
Grew up with this. But, I stopped hearing this several years ago, I wonder why they don't test the tornado sirens where I live anymore? (SE Michigan) Anyhow, they nailed it, exactly like I remember.
when we hear a siren like that here in NY, it's a volunteer fire dept's attention signal. Do y'all still have those out there too? if so, how do you tell them apart?
Most towns in Illinois are small enough that even if there are say 12 full time firefighters they still have 12+ volunteers. Many just have volunteers. They carry pagers when they are on call. They are also the only people besides police allowed to have blue lights on a vehicle. Usually a old fashion round roller light on the dash. Though you don't legally have to pull over for them. People will because they aren't clowns.
In Vienna we only have sporadic siren tests, but we live close to Lower Austria and there the sirens are tested every Saturday at noon. We can hear them

Yup. Wednesdays at noon. Which if I were a tornado (and I’m not), that’s exactly when I’d choose to strike.
