Lawn mower blades are bolted directly to the crank shaft out put. When it hits something that does not move the energy of the blade spinning instantly reverses and pooof. Usually you hit a tent pole or something and throw the timing of the engine off and causing an expensive mower repair. This is pretty extreme I’m guessing he hit something anchored underground.
Transfer of momentum, possibly. The piston may have seized, which is why it goes up rather than out if the cylinder is oriented that way. If it's not, then I would agree with a sudden loss of controlled combustion due to a hole forming in the cylinder.
I was expecting a ground hornet nest or a puff of ant hill dirt. I was not expecting an explosion/catastrophic failure that resulted in the mower somersaulting seven feet into the air.
Luckily he should be able to recover 40% of the materials that can be reassembled for 90% of the original cost meaning this is a net savings of 60% of a new mower.
Those old Sears-Roebuck push mowers had this built is as a feature so you knew when it was time to replace them. I think it was the 1978-1982 production years.

From what it looks like the lawn mower underwent rapid unscheduled disassembly.
