It was very dramatic I cried

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

frankly, balancing a checkbook takes kindergarten math and a modicum of organizational skills. that is not what algebra class is for.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the teachers defense, balancing your checkbook is basically like dealing with imaginary numbers...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Imaginary numbers are useful. Unless you would rather us not have a good way of creating electronics.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

if you are learning about imaginary numbers you have already covered what you need to balance a check book

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

people who think maths is useless are so annoying and stupid

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

OH MY GOD I'M SO GLAD I GRADUATED. Not being in school anymore is seriously the best.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Be free my niggas

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Y'know, as a teacher, I laughed and felt annoyed the whole way through.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, fuck people who are prepared. Fucking douches

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

#8 Well fucking done.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My favorite day of junior high was learning about imaginary numbers in algebra. No joke. I begged our teacher to teach us more about them.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

All these numbers and you still don't add up

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I fully expected #1 to turn into porn. This place has ruined me.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Angrily scrolled down to write a checkbook balancing comment ... Damn looks like everyone has it covered.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thought the first one was gonna go down a lil differently

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was taught how to write checks and balance a checkbook in my 4th grade math class. 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It was part of the curriculum. I'm not sure why it was taken out...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

We learned it for a few weeks in 9th grade, but I don't remember most of it anymore. Checkbooks, taxes, etc. Taxes went right over my head.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I let my homework on fire....

11 years ago | Likes 140 Dislikes 3

I DON'T CARE, I LOVE IT

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

brit spotted

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Apparently he needs to not let all his homework on fire

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He's about to let his bed on fire. His whole dawn house might get let if he's not careful.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I want to punch #4 in the face so damn much.

11 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 18

As a perfectionist, I will over study for this test if I damn well please!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Go for it, won't stop me from getting a 100 on the Bio final asshole. #curvekiller

Carbon is the party animal of the periodic table.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I lold thanks

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uhhh, ummmmm, uhhhhh, see what you did there.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You deserve more up votes.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I had to read this several times before I understood. Then again, I've had nearly two bottles of wine so there's that

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Checkbooks are actually a very outdated method of payment.

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Balancing a checkbook helps teach you how/why to pay attention to your fiances. I used them until I trained myself then switched methods.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eh, they're still very widespread in certain businesses. The more practical ones, anyway. Not that they'd be using many imaginary numbers.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Anyone else just want to go for a really long hike around the world for a few years and see all the cool places you've ever wanted to see?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm down, yo. I propose Iceland.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool, as in cold, as in the temperature, not your attitude

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My daughter got dress coded for wearing soccer shorts that were knee length...while surrounded by boys wearing the same that had no issues.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Did you bring it up to anyone's attention? You should, you really might expose some stuck up sexist values someone's been able to hide.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She also got in school suspension this year for wearing a Bowling for Soup concert shirt with the word beer on it.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

that last one. i can picture this in my head. everyone very sad and such...

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I REALLY lost my shit at that one. Like laughing loudly alone in my living room.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Let's be realistic: a class on taxes and checkbook balancing is way more dull than imaginary numbers. IMAGINARY. NUMBERS.

11 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 6

Calculus with complex numbers!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How lazy can your parents be to not teach you the basics on running a household. It's like them not teaching you to do laundry/make your bed

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

Unfortunately not everyone has good responsible parents either.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not necessairly lazy, both my parents worked 80 hour weeks to pay the bills, so they didn't have the time or energy to teach me everything

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Thank god for the internet and basic problem solving abilities

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Some just simply don't know how to do it themselves or assume the schools teach u how to do that. A lot of parents dont realize how

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Important it is to teach their kids that while they're still young and a lot of kids dont realize that's a necessary life skill to ask about

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Twive!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, the number you're looking for is threeve.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love you

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like you,too

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but one is used more by the common person.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

School is suppose to be more than just surviving in the world.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

School should help you provide for Maslows needs from the bottom up, more or less. Sometimes it seems to do top down.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Zero also.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But really though, imaginary numbers are like some of the coolest shit. Hella important too.

11 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 7

Also, what kind of school would EVER just introduce the concept of imaginary numbers without AT LEAST a week of buildup of the Algebra (1)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

behind it and why they're important. You don't just spring that shit on kids, man! I got those in Freshman year and I was fine with it (2)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

because they made sure we understood their importance and applications before we ever did a problem with them (last).

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, and also, he's not in vocational school, right? Art, music, literature, math, you're not learning welding. You're becoming educated.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Balancing a checkbook is addition and subtraction. If you can't do that, how did you get as far as a class with imaginary numbers?

11 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

I think the problem is kids don't know what they need to do. If they had one lecture on what they needed to do, they'd be set.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the problem is kids just wait for someone to tell them what to do, instead of figuring it out or ASKING.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its actually not just that. Its paying attention to your income and expenses. Which is something everyone could learn.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck teaching people the 'paying attention' skill.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imaginary numbers are useless? WTF? How about I take your computer and your car's suspension then, as those wouldn't be possible without 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 6

Chill out hot damn.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Imaginary numbers are useless *for most people to learn. Yes.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

Thank you. That one always bugs the shit out of me.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, you know, imaginary numbers are kind of useless for people not going into a field where they have to know them. Especially (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

when they're taught in the place of everyday life skills like cooking or doing taxes. So many new adults experience anxiety because (2/3)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

they haven't learned how to function outside of an academic setting.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

learning anything complex and exercising your mental faculties is never useless

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

those "useless" imaginary numbers. Stupid little shit. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 4

Chill out, damn.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think he means more outside of specific areas imaginary numbers aren't used where as everyone could use knowing basic accounting.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Basic accounting: 1) Make two columns. 2) Title them "Spending" and "Income" 3) Fill both and add each up 4) Check if "Income" > "Spending.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Including budgeting and preparing for unexpected expenses.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This pissed me off so much!!! Yeah, lets just go and abandon everything related to complex numbers, oszillations, angles... to be fair.. (1)

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

(2) its probably the school systen, which fails to teach kids the importance and beauty of eulers theorems.

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

No, it's a culture that's spent three generation telling kids that being good at math makes you a social pariah. The schools can't compete.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

Who needs to balance a checkbook, online banking does it for you now!

11 years ago | Likes 572 Dislikes 7

"Oh look, I have 200 euro left this month. This is going to boost my interest on my savings account by 2 cents. Awesome!"

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I record payments before my bank does it. Also I have multiple account, checking, saving, credit cards, ect. In 1 place.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I teach a financial literacy class to 8th graders. Its eye opening how much they don't know. And that they will probably never write a check

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

check books? do people still use them? haven't seen one since I was a wee lad.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT BALANCING A CHECKBOOK MEANS! As an australian, thanks obama

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

^This. Honestly have no idea what it means. I'm guessing making sure income exceeds outgoings? But how do you need to be 'taught' that?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Because that guy is either a troll or an idiot.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The guy in the pictures, I mean.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just sit inside with my 3 best friends: penny, chip, and used napkin

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 27, own my home, my wedding is next year, and about to change careers. I have never had or wish I'd had a checkbook.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who can't add and subtract numbers? Taxes are just percentages and filling out boxes. If you pay attention it's not that hard either. (

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

I will admit that forms are annoying and tedious though. Especially scary when you involve money.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That and there are some people (myself) who will always find a way to misinterpret the instructions. Still doesn't stop me from doing taxes.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know if you know this, but banks do make mistakes.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Checkbook?? WHAT YEAR IS THIS?!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. And some kids like math and learning how to use imaginary numbers will be helpful to them. But continue being self-centered

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

What a time to be alive.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If people learn how to do that shit on their own, my job field is going to get a hell of a lot more narrow.

11 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 0

I thought you said if " people learnt to shit on their own"

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't worry, I plan on remaining oblivious.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Amen.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what do you do exactly? I've never used a checkbook. .

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me either. I use mint.com and my bank will mail out all my bills for me. Never had a paper check, have yet to need one.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well I don't know about OP but I'm an accountant and I'd love it for people to learn to do it themselves

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't worry. Just picture someone of avg intelligence and remember that half the planet is dumber than that motherfucker. Your job is safe.

11 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Median*

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We'll assume median is approximate to the mean because we don't have the data right now.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well anyone working in technical field with some kind of acdc should learn the math.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All that addition and subtraction in checkbooks. Too hard for the guy taking more advanced math.

11 years ago | Likes 1197 Dislikes 17

How about listening to your parents for once? They can teach you life skills.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hard? Or USELESS? Too much useless math is taught as a generality...as if it happens in everyday life and you need to use it. You dont. Wont

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think most people don't even know what balancing a check book requires. I think the fact no one knows speaks for itself.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

I just hate this argument against analytic math. Not only do people assume its worthless for no real reason, but they act like 1)

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

All I know is that I have no idea how banks, loans, financing or buying cars/houses work but I've spent 2 years learning geometry.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3) undergo. You may not necessarily use complex numbers in your line of work, but your increased analytical skills by using them will

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

school isn't supposed to be vocational/life training. anyone who thinks so misses the point. School is about developing critical thinking 1)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2) work ethics, analytical skills, and cultural awareness, that will make you a more productive member of society in whatever you choose to

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) doing math will Never even benefit your critical thinking skills and will never serve anyone, ever.

11 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Wholeheartedly agree

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And they imply you need to learn basic math again for financial interactions

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What if they know what job they want and analytic math IS useless for them?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most of school is about learning how to learn and think and making you a well-rounded person.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Studying math can still increase critical thinking skills.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I honestly don't understand what you could mean by balancing a chequebook. Is that like maintaining your own personal ledgers?

11 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

... I don't make enough money for my checkbook to qualify as "ledgers"....

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's right. It's simply a matter of keeping track, independently, of your expenses. It's not difficult.

11 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

oh, thanks. Yeah, just export your bank statements to excel. Simples

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

There was a time before personal computers and electronic banking were ubiquitous, so people had to keep track of their expenses with paper.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's still more a question of diligence than math though. If you can add and subtract, you have everything you need.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't understand the concept of it bc it was never introduced to me by anyone. Yet I was honors/AP through high school and now in college

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plus, research suggests learning general maths is more beneficial for future financial behaviour than specific financial education (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly what kid in school today is ever going to write a check?

11 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 4

That's not quite what it means. It means more of balancing a log of your finances.

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

my town doesn't allow utilities to be paid with debit, I HAVE to write checks. It happens

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My city utilities are automatically paid online.. the future is now.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

we don't even have online billing :/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wrote checks right after I graduated, but they shouldn't give checkbooks to college kids. Bad decisions were made.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You make money, you add it to the balance. You spend money, you subtract it from the balance. Nothing to it

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

But no one ever explains this, which is kinda the point.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who even writes checks anymore...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Do you pay rent in cash?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

automatic bill pay, or I use a debit card

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My landlord is an individual person, not a company, so he doesn't have this option.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So transfer money from your bank account to the landlord's account. Should be as easy as writing a check.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Automatic bill pay is through my bank

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

American, right? I never figured out why US banks can't seem to get their shit together and provide basic transaction options.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been asked by financial advisers if I've balanced my checkbook and I have no idea how the fuck you do it. I'm good at math, just dunno

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

you just subtract your purchases from the original amount in your bank account.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

To those responding - Seems like it's already taken care of by online banking lol

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Write down how much money you have in your checking account. Then update every time you make a deposit, withdrawal, debit purchase, or check

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Microsoft Money Sunset. It's free. Just record your purchases and reconcile them against your bank statements each month.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Imaginary numbers aren't considered advanced math anymore. It's algebra II.

11 years ago | Likes 339 Dislikes 11

wait is algebra ii not advanced anymore? when I graduated high school, I don't think it was a requirement.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When was that? At least in NJ, students have to be well versed in geometry and alg II. Most students take calc AB or BC (or multivar, etc.).

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All I said was that imaginary numbers are more advanced than addition and subtraction.

11 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

well, the basics are. But complex numbers have applications well into advanced math. Differential equations use them a lot for example

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

They're also important to modeling cyclical motion such as springs, pendulums and AC circuits. Taking Class Mech this semester.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know. I'm also a physics student.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh. High five?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still more advanced than the ability to add and subtract simple numbers to two decimal places.

11 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 3

What we're getting at here is how alot of us learned useless shit in school, like how we know how to write without lifting our pens. 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

like seriously...who uses cursive? 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*raises hand* It's much faster for taking notes than print writing, IMO.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Most of the Europe afaik. At least as long as it's handwritten.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Though I don't personally use it, it is a much faster way to write as you are not stoping at each individual letter.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyone who has taken the SAT. Seriously. I'm not entirely sure I understand why it's on there.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned it in algebra 1a last semester...

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This means nothing without knowing your age or grade level.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Highschool freshman, fifteen years of age.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's about when I'd expect, honestly. i isn't even a difficult concept.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fact we don't consider algebra 2 advanced pleases me

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

No kidding. Because it's really not. I really wish the advanced kids would be allowed to get into higher math earlier, too.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was taking Geom in 8th grade homeschooled. Switched to public school, and they threw me in pre-alg...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had to take 2 math classes sophomore year just to be able to take AP calc senior year.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's super messed up.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did alg II and geometry in 7th/8th grade. If the school won't provide, there are always extracurricular classes (G&T, MIT OCW, etc.).

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sadly, those weren't commonly available when I was in 7th/8th grade.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seriously, I hate this argument. "Balance a checkbook" is a SPED class for a reason. If you're in Algebra II, figure it the fuck out.

11 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 12

It's not even that hard. Microsoft Money Sunset is free and all you do is press a few buttons.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

And when your computer doesn't work...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Well then you need to keep your receipts. Check the receipts against the bank statement mailed to you.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

So you'd rather keep a volatile sheet of thermal paper as a record instead of your checkbook. Right...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah elementary school math gives you enough knowledge to balance a checkbook. If people can't apply it that's on them.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

THANK YOU. I get so sick of people complaining about stuff like this. If you truly want to learn it, there are resources online for you.

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 16

Resources online are not the same thing as having a teacher.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

'Resources online are not the same thing as being forced to learn it'

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

True, but I do think many people choose to complain about what they didn't have rather than use what they do.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

There are resources online for learning most levels of math as well.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think the intent is more about learning/understanding/focusing on understanding personal finance, not specifically a checkbook.

11 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 11

Had the choice, of taking an online personal finance class over the summer vs an economics class... it was pass fail based on whether or 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not we got over 80% on the one test that was graded, the questions were taken from 5 practice tests, which I just had open in 2/3

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Other tabs, there was no time limit, I found every answer without having to think, yeah horray for personal finance

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I learned some pretty useful personal finance stuff in calc. The point is they teach you a skill and you apply it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most high schools require finance/economics classes so, I'm not at all sure what you're talking about.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine didn't. People just didn't listen in Alg 2 when the teacher taught us compound interest. And then bitched about real world application.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fucking yes, thank you. "Balance a checkbook" is just a metaphor for learning about finances in general.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 8

So, addition, subtraction, and exponents (if you want to get fancy and figure out compounding interest). You learn that already.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If your outcome is greater than your income, you are fucked. If your income is greater than outcome save the difference for when the first(1)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or, synecdoche.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Decrease outcome until less than income, then continue with the nonfucked path. Lesson. Fucking. Done.(3)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

happens.Take positive difference and put some of it into an IRA. Continue with this procedure until retirement. If you are currently f'd (2)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And seeing as school teaches you everything you need to know to figure that out for yourself, it's a terrible argument.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That requires thought to get to, though. :P

Well it's a pretty poor metaphor, considering it's second grade material.

These schools, trying to teach me useless crap like exponents or calculating terms in a series, when all I want to know is how to 1/2

They teach that. Exponential functions.

figure out how much money will be in my savings account after a few years. 2/2

School has already taught you that. It's called basic mathematics.

For example, exponents and imaginary numbers become key in mathematics of wave theory, which become critical for analysis of dampening

Is counting to 20 really that hard? :D

Why? I really hate this argument. Just because something isn't the minimum required to survive doesn't mean pursuing it won't benefit you

a wrong analysis of this math means that the bridge you have might go say... the way of the Tacoma narrows bridge

We had a class that taught stuff like this. Turns out, it was super simple and the class was pretty my a joke.

We had a 4-week course as part of Computers covering finances and using a checkbook. I remember nothing. It was not very helpful.

It will be when you have to manage your finances/budget...something imaginary numbers wont wont be used with.

Just because its simple doesn't mean it's not worthwhile, though.

It'd be more worthwhile to teach how things like high speed trading and other accounting tricks means you're likely screwed for life.

It's just something they should have a short class on; a week or two. Teach (high school) kids taxes, checks, basic life skills. It (1/2
