Chile's Atacama Desert [700x467]

I was there 3 or 4 years ago (amazing place, would go back anytime). Thanks to title, I wouldn't have recognized the desert otherwise.

I take it there are bees around to pollinate these flowers, what do the bees live on in the dry years

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah Science!

this is called "Desierto Florido" (Flowered desert) and happens between september and november when it rains heavily in Atacama.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's a nice filter

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice pics

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's doing the same thing in Hawaii. Some parts of the island get like no rain because of the mountains and it's soo lush right now

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Here in Chile, it's been fucking us up with rain. This year we're calling it "El Niño Godzilla" (check #elniñogodzilla on Twitter)

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Visited there due to its renown as the best place to see stars. Got an unseasonably cloudy 3 days when I visited. Not a star to be seen.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This happens almost every year, tho. El Niño has only caused it to last longer

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is going to rattle the jimmies of star gazers over there, no? Don't they rely on the extreme dryness of the desert?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This happens frequently, but not in all Atacama. In it's central area, there are records of 400 years without rain.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tx :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My favourite phrase in the history of phrases.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If you insist..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This comment. This comment is beautiful.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Ok ;-)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So were all those flowers like "We'll just wait here. Sure its dry now. but one day..."?

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

That's about it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's pretty much what happens with seasons on normal places, only in a larger time frame over there

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Basically, yes.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe they've re-germinated wheat seeds buried for 3000 years in Egyptian tombs... dry seeds don't give a fuck about time.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Need a seed related deal with it gif

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uuuuuh... that doesn't look anything like wheat

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

He believes "they've", they have, not "they're", they are. He's giving an example.

"I AM IN THE HEART OF THE STORM KNOWN AS EL NINO, WHICH TRANSLATES TO, "THE NINO".

10 years ago | Likes 429 Dislikes 4

The Boy Child, technically. Yes, I'm fun at parties.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still one of the best weekend updates

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can hear it

Chris Farley

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I'll never read the words "EL NINO" in any voice but his.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fuck your quotes.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, yeah. They're fucked up. If you're referring to the absence of the double quotes at the end, yeahhhh.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yesssssss

The girl*

The Boy*

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I thought it's the boy, with nina (wiggly thing over n) being the girl (o=masculine, a=feminine)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh yeahhh! I'm just learning so need to remember these things, cheers!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Es un "n" con un bigote. ese es the only espanol i hablo.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"La "ñ" es un "n" con un bigote " is more or less a direct quote from my high school spanish class :p

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, yes, I supposed it could be that xD Don't worry, hs English class here sucks as well.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So the rain really did bring the train!

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

and the tracks

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Who planted all the flower seeds?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the seeds probably have been there for a long time. You know, before it became a desert.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

mostly sarcasm, but actually curious how that worked

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure that the seeds sit underground without germinating; sort of like hibernation in animals. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2/2 When it finally rains they all begin to grow and produce the next generation of seeds. Not sure how they're pollinated though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would assume birds spread the seed, then wait to germinate, as you said.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For the first time in history, it caused a train to grow in the desert. A true wonder of nature.

10 years ago | Likes 2026 Dislikes 8

I read that in Jeremy Clarkson's voice.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CHOO CHOO, MOTHERFUCKER. TRAINS ARE GROWING UP IN HERE!

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

The only other place I've seen trains run in dry places must have been on your moms downstairs mixup...

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thank you for brightening up my morning

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A wild train appears!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was eating chipotle and nearly choked to death mid bite because I laughed at this. Now everyone at the office thinks I'm dying. +1

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You. I like you.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I thought you loved me. Now you only like me. Hm.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Crazy how nature do dat.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Crazy how nature make dat.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

I busted out laughing at this. No one heard me cause I'm in my house alone.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks, Muad'dib.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The sleeper must awaken

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't trains usually grow in more sub-tropical climates?\

10 years ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 0

They can, but typically during Spring/Summer, which is what makes this so remarkable

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It could be an African train!

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Well, an African train, maybe. But not a European train. that's my point.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I thought African trains were non-migratory.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

perhaps they were transported

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, actually they are native to the rainy, depressing plains of England.

10 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

Also known by their Latin name "The Tube".

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I suppose that makes sense. What was I thinking of then? Oh, right, anacondas.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

So this website is not on drugs?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anacondas prefer to grow in environments where buns are present.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0
