First TX shelter for battered men opens in Dallas.

May 28, 2017 11:08 PM

The Family Place is a nonprofit organization centered out of Dallas that helps men, women, and children fleeing verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. In previous years, women and children have stayed at their on-campus housing, while men were placed in hotels by the charity. The organization realized that it needed to increase its ability to serve men fleeing abusive situations, so it has opened a shelter dedicated to serving men in the area, with 21 beds and private rooms.

There is a huge stigma around men being abused, and The Family Place hopes that opening a male-dedicated campus will help raise awareness of the issue, as well as help increase respect for the men enduring violence from their partners. (used this gif bc all the stock images of men crying were silly and over-acted; case-in-point).

If you're a man or woman in the Dallas area in a dangerous or difficult situation, please call 214-941-1991, family place's crisis hotline. You deserve safety, love, and respect.

If you'd like to donate to their cause (I have!), you may do so here: http://www.familyplace.org/donation/donate

Here's a list of their other important services: http://www.familyplace.org/ourservices/our-services

Yay for equality! We have a long way to go with this issue, but this is PROGRESS!

Strange question, but is there a live feed of the street across the shelter?

I'm from Dallas!

I know I'm a geek because I read this as "first transmit shelter..."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a feminist- really glad to see this. Hoping some day there will be one in every city.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Fellow feminist - same! :)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Hopefully this one won't get shouted down. Genuinely heart-warming to see someone who cares

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 4

I'm a SJW, extreme far-left liberal, and other names that are not for polite company these days. This is a great idea and want more of 'em.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Wait so men finally have two shelters or is this still the only one compared to the over 2000 women's shelter?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's progress. You have to start somewhere.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Deep Ellum Brewery just realesed their first sour. Dak is the quarterback. Dallas is becoming the city Texas deserves. Feeling homesick

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Amen. It'll be here ready for you when you can return

TFP is a wonderful organization, love seeing them extend their services like this.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

in the uk research indicates DA/DV is 50/50, yet the view is is still predominately biased on women. this abuse destroys and kills

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I wonder if men are less likely to seek help bc of the stigma, or bc of the sexist idea that women can't abuse men.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Likely both.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@op and @lulzbian, agreed, research indicates its both and society having those ideas, be glad it will change as more are aware of it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good to hear. I was abused by my ex fiance and it took me short of killing myself to finally leave her. Moved back home for a bit 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm really glad you're alive and safe.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here. Her bullshit wasn't worth losing my life over.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but I'm back on my own again. Her bi-polar became unbearable, especially since she refused meds. The beatings and cheating finally got old.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What if I'm not from the Dallas area, or in danger?

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 5

Then you can call me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell your mother. As a mother, can confirm we can and will whoop asses if you mess with our boys.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if I'm a woman, and not in danger? Im not, but i have a friend who is a woman and not in danger and need to know what i should tell her

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You should tell her, "Keep being awesome, cause you really, really are"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Volunteer or donate to your local shelter :)

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Donate hugs.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thank god, only took a guy to kill himself over it.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

One?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I ask because men have double the rate of suicide compared to women, and it's not really a coincidence.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The one in my city closed down. Wasnt used. Not because men dont get abused (obviously it is less significant abuse usually) but generally..

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

..dont seek help. Hopefully shelters arent seen as feminine as much

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Did a ridealong with a cop and got a call to a domestic. Cop was ready to arrest the guy automatically but when we got there I knew../2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...the couple. Told him it was probably the woman that was the aggressor. I was right. But she didn't get arrested.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's a women's shelter in Vancouver that even won legal rights to not take trans. Sounds basic till you find out they actually don't /1

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Believe trans are women, call them men, accuse them of risking the abused women. Petition for right-wing Christians on bathroom bills./2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There's a form of radical feminism called TERF where they disavow all trans, call it mutilation, and that they are men moving into /3

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Their "safe spaces" as part of the patriarchy trying to control them from the inside. It's fucking crazy. And some of these women make /4

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Us and Canadian policy. So yeah, these poor guys are going to get major dozxing and hatemail. One is good. It's not enough! /ens

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's sad that your government does not care so you have to rely on NGOs.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

Why do you you assume its the government's responsibility? NGO'S help willingly, better service and better community

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 9

I like your idea of making money by giving it away.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone from Dallas, it's great to see some positive stories in the news. The poor city doesn't have the best track record

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

I live/grew up in Dallas and I saw the skyline before the title. I was prepared for something fucked up. Yay we did something right!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i know, as someone born and raised in D town. we are basically a president killing town that only cares about our superbowl trophies.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

So true it hurts

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

As another from Dallas, yep. However I love this city

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Me too homie.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is verbal abuse a thing? Like if there are a lot of threats does that count as abuse?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, verbal abuse is very much a thing and extremely damaging.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Verbal abuse can include threats of violence, but in my experience it's where they manipulate you into thinking you're worthless 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's about changing your psych into one that thinks they'll never do better and isolates them from friends/family.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm no expert, that being said.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome theres one for men, I know a guy who's wife threw boiling water on him on purpose, ended up going to the hospital. Abusive cunt!

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 2

Is he okay? That's absolutely horrendous I hope she's in jail for her crimes.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

No, he was too embarrassed to say anything. We all knew, finally admitted it after the divorce while drunk. Thankfully he took the trash out

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

All down his shoulder and arm, accident my ass!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Man, I'm glad she's out of his life at least. Hope he's healing (physically and mentally).

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Fun childhood story. My oldest brother is a dick and kept messing with my sister (who later ended up on meds for being crazy). 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

She was making ramen, and walking past with the pot of boiling water. He reached out like he was going to hit it and she spilled a bit, 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

so she angrily threw it on his face. Now he can't grow facial hair on his left side. 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Omg he is lucky it wasn't worse and got into his eyes or something, shit...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda sounds like he was a dick as well. Not saying she should have through hot water on him but a hit to the arm yeah.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

He said it was boiling water... so thats permanent scaring tissue. This reminds me of a similar inccident when a man poured boiling 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate to be that guy, but I expect a massive barrage of hate mail against the founder.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 10

I hope not. :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah there are already threats against the people who run the thing by feminists like any men's shelter

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

That's not feminists.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

That's infuriating and objectively disgusting.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Source?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I posted this article and I'm a feminists. People like that are abusing the world feminist and it's not cool. Boo them.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boot them out off your organizations then. They use your donated money and resources to keep abusing people

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Ya, I'd love to. But how? Other than to disavow those people, not much your average person can do. Look for the good in people buddy :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Call me ignorant if you want, but why would there be hate mail?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Past experience. This is the best collection of examples I could find: https://pastebin.com/LyXcp2Ve

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I now feel nauseous. This is why we use the word FEMINAZI.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

*misandrists.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

These are not feminists.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

Keep telling yourself that, maybe it makes the problem go away.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

Keep telling yourself that they're feminists. Maybe it makes the problem go away.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

They are. That's why identity politics are so dangerous. When you support an identity, you support everyone who assumes that identity.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

They're misandrists.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

They haven't been denounced and many of them are leaders in very large feminist organizations

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

Even if true, it doesn't mean they're feminists.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 8

Because people think sexism only goes one way. That ignorance is what really prevents the feminist movement from proliferating at the rate

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

The feminist movement these days is extremely sexist

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

There are plenty of good feminist representation that's agreeable and reasonable. Just that they are also equally afraid of the feminazi

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Look up any feminist who speaks out against feminazis.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe it could just be an "abuse shelter" rather than "men's abuse shelter" or "women's abuse shelter".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

There are plenty of unisex shelters and women's shelters but this is the only male shelter existing in the US after the last one was shut(1)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Down due to violence protests and threats driving the founder/owner/runner to suicide. I don't see feminists destroying the women's shelters

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

which it should in this progressive age. People are hesitant, because we aren't doing enough to oust the misandrists, with fear of being

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

labelled as sexist for doing so.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Maybe it could be an "abuse shelter" for anyone, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or otherwise.
