TLDR @MereMarker was clearly having a shit week no one wants to pay 1200 for something they didnt even do. That's when the awesome @exlurker42 stepped in and dropped some very helpful tips that would cost them $35.

I love seeing people helping other people. There's been so much hate and violence around the world it's nice to see some genuine kindness.

Plot Twist: Her grandma did it.

Only do this on a car if you dont care how it looks, touch-up paint is by no means pretty, it just makes the damage harder to see from afar

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Someone scratched my car and didnt leave a note yesterday, I'm gonna try this too, thank you! ????

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone keyed a giant penis in my car :/

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't fucking use Dawn dish soap. It's for dishes, not cars.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd love to hear a version of "Before He Cheats" where the girl was an abusive drunk who keyed the wrong car when husband was at AlAnon.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Talk about clickbait, I thought we were gonna get the"love triangle" but got "that'll buff out" instead, is there a that de-escalated meme?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's like it depends on the day. This day they got help. Had it been the next, they would've been called an idiot and ridiculed mercilessly.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

"you can fix paint damage with a rattle can of touch up paint and a scouring pad", sure. If you want your car to look like hammered shit.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Just use sharpie.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

An inexperienced painter with a rattle can, that will not end well

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Worked for a body shop for years. Do not do this. Please do not do this.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And NEVER wash your car with fucking dish soap! That shit is horrible for clear coat

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a really fast, cheap, and easy way to ruin your cars paint. Might fill in the scratches, but it will cost more to undo and fix later.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Being told how to fix it and executing it are very different. Touch up paint ain't going to fix that.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

good from far, far from good

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is why when I sell an insurance policy, I quote with 500 ded No reason to ever pay more than that to fix your car for these situations

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So your trying to get upvotes on two things you had nothing to do with? Lol

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Sometimes keys don't actually get through the clearcoat and you can sand it down, polish it and you're fine. If not, you still have this!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, this isn't a fix, but you can wash it with dish soap, apply clear coat and sand it with 2k 3k & 4k sand paper, polish for protection.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'll keep the rust out, this is also an opportunity to acquire a new skill and practice on the car.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah $35 and a LOT of man hours. There are at least 15 steps you're not including. Some things should not be DIY. This is one of them. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Why is homer simpson running in the notification bar?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

probably a game notification

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is a question that needs an answer.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Simpsons tapped out.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been addicted for years

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who had their paint scratched right after signing for a car, this is actually super conveniently timed

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If it's a new car, get it professionally done. Or, at least heavily research it, don't just go by Imgur. Remember, there's a reason -

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

- it's so expensive to do it professionally. It's time consuming and more resource intensive than anyone here will tell you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah, I know. I bought it used but wasn't wanting a new scuff on it from day 1. I probably won't get around to tucking it up anyway

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*touching

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uhhhh ya.... $35- idk what crock of shit this guy is spitting. Those results are going to look like shit, rattle can.. save that for beaters

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 3

'fixed' for $35... I'd just do some sweet rattle can racing stripes rather than try to match the color. There's no way in hell that'd work.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

it's just a clear coat scratch it look like even.....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Clear coat cannot be repaired. Repeat after me "clear coat cannot be repaired". Trust me- repainting my motorcycle tank tomorrow.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

35 bucks is an understatement. 35 bucks and 8 hours of hard labor to make it look halfway decent maybe.

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 3

still, 1200 bucks for 8 hours of labour plus 35 bucks is a ripoff.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Because professionals, who have studied a profession, deserve to get compensated for their expertise.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

As someone who has spent 2 years in college for what turned out to be a useless degree, 1200 bucks for 8 hours of work is complete bullshit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$150/hour is the fee the company I work for charges for Engineering consulting services. IIRC, mechanics generally get ~$30/hour.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alright, I can see that as being a reasonable wage, and the price blowup doesn't surprise me. Still think the price is kinda bullshit though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to be fair op is missing a wheelcap. i bet xhe doesn't give an ass if the color is a bit off

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree. It'd still be better than how it is now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*she.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let's just all agree to use "they" as a gender neutral, singular pronoun.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FYI don't use dawn dish soap. It has a lifting agent that will chew through clear coat. You probably seen cars with chewed up clear coat.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually depending on the depth of the scratches you want to remove part of the clear coat with dish soap.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Especially if you have a wax compound on your car.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use a good compound wax with a buffer to get the marks down. Then wipe with a damp towline. Then apply paint very light coats allow drying.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Between coats. Then apply clear coat after 24hours. Good luck op. Pm me if you have any questions

I was really hoping this was going to be a successful witch hunt where they track down the guy and key his face.

8 years ago | Likes 438 Dislikes 12

Key it with acid.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Girls key cars ,guys punch stab or shoot.Unless it's my ex wife then its all of them at once.

"Homewrecker" is usually a term used by girls to other girls

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 2

Im with you, sell their organs to pay for the car

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Nah, it's definitely a girl who did this.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Track down the guy? Every story like this has been a girl keying a cheating dude/mistresses car. Not to say it doesn't go the other way.

8 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 5

Sounds like a job for 4chan.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I do paint work for a living(Not a body shop) I can tell you right now that the touch up tube paint is horse shit in the fact that its not

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

(2) even the same kind of paint and usually not the right color for what is on the car and if you don't do the clear coat properly it will

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

(3) look like utter ass. Unless the owner of the car is prepared to have it look just as bad when they are done, then they should do it.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

(4) otherwise they should save up and find a shop that will work for cash, smaller shops will do it for far less than $1200 if you pay cash

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

(5) instead of going through insurance.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Username checks out. It's clearly a beater, why does he care if the color is /exact/? You gonna drive around with "Homewrecker" on your car?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because I know even my friends who drive beaters would hate if the color was off. Better off just clearing it and seeing what goes away

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

It might be cheaper to go to the wrecking yard and get 2 new doors, its a popular colour so chances are you will find a perfect match

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's not going to be cheaper than 35$ but it'll definitely look better.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cheaper than $1200

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The rattle can would fix it. Extremely poorly, but better than all of those scratches.

8 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 3

May as well tell him to go buy a dozen cans of rustoleum and go to town.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

100%. It'll cover it, it'll look like garbage. OP will wind up looking like a shitty driver, but not a homewrecker at least.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I've sprayed cars. $35 wouldn't cover materials, more importantly there's a lot of additional steps and skill involved

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It would look fucking terrible.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep, Insurance may cover proper repair

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Unless they just have liability.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but then OP has to pay a deductible and risk insurance rates increasing.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not if he has only fire and theft. Most people on a budget never go for the full insurance options.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You got the $500 deductible?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In other words $1200 to fix it properly

8 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 2

yep...I worked for a company that made aftermarket paint. it's tricky to match colors. it's not the same as factory paint after sitting (1)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

in the sun and fading for years. it's often 3-4 different shades to get it perfect (2/2)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It looks like it's Toyota 1G3. The hardest color to match that's out there right now

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not to be rude to @OP but I'm pretty sure that car isn't worth $1200 so dumping money into it wouldn't be a smart use of funds.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

I wish cars were that cheap.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a recently previous owner of a 1200 dollar car, this car looks way more expensive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a pretty new looking car. What car do you think it is?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Definitely over 1200, but it has hubcaps, so it has to be a cheap old shit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do hub caps mean it's cheap and old? You can buy a new car with hubcaps on it from factory...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Car looks close to 10 years old. Depending in the car, most of its value is probably gone. Probably worth more than $1200 but not by a lot

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I'm like 90% certain it's a toyata yaris. In Canada an early Toyota yaris is unlikely less than 5k. Maybe 4k at auction.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where do you love that a 10 year old car is less than 2k? Here in Canada a 10 year old car is worth like 4k. Maybe less if it's a domestic.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

10 year old car in SoCal runs anywhere from 3 to 5k depending on the make

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But that's not a particular car. I'm pretty sure that's a newer domestic(USA) or at most 6 year old import. It's should be atleast 5k
