After a front page appearance, I got a phone call...
Steve Harvey, a nationally syndicated daytime talk show, saw a story on Reddit about a promise I made to send 20 kids with cancer to Disneyland. With the help of Reddit, we were able to raise enough money for 100 Disneyland tickets. Steve Harvey interviewed me on his show and surprised me with this check.
All of this money is being used to fund "because I said I would," a non-profit organization, and I have never taken a cent of wage from this effort.
Reddit is the reason "because I said I would" has spread...
Millions of people across the world have heard about "because I said I would" because of Reddit. This is a promise card that a young high school student wrote after hearing about "because I said I would." I send 10 promise cards, at no cost, to anyone who requests them.
To save her brother....
A woman named Shawnta told me that her brother was diabetic and had complete renal failure...
"The last time he was admitted my father and I rushed him to the hospital and on the way there he cried out and said "I'm tired of this (being sick) I can't do this anymore." those words hurt me to the core and I cried out "Don't worry I will give u a kidney, just hang on."
Shawnta donated her kidney on March 29th, 2013.
Staying true to your word.
Laura stuck to her promise and donated over 13 inches of her hair to Locks of Love last month.
I have been working to reach more people.
I share the importance of a promise by visiting organizations and student groups.
For example, the sorority sisters of Ohio University Delta Gamma make a commitment to community service every semester. I gave a speech to them on Sunday encouraging them to stay true to their word.
One of their moms was in attendance and was kind enough to take this picture for us. She asked me to stand on a chair so it would be easier to point me out in the photo... I'm pretty sure you can tell which one is me :)
Thank you for giving my life purpose.
"Because I said I would" is a Reddit story. I would have never reached any of these people if it wasn't for Reddit. I receive messages every day from people telling me about how these cards have given them something to hold on to when they just want to give up. This experience has had a profound and life-changing effect on me.
So I wrote this letter and resigned from my job.
Thank you for giving my life purpose.
Also...
Today is my cake day :)

My brother needs my kidney. He isn't getting it because I said I would. He's getting it because he's my damn brother.

I upvoted this, because I said I would. Also because you are a good person, Alex Sheen.
Omny
Reddit is like 4chan in that it has a lot of things I don't like, but when it does stuff I do like, I love it.
itsawondertoo
+1 for goody guy Alex because I said I would!

Amazing, so glad to see how successful this is becoming. Sidenote, really excited to know that Steve Harvey uses Reddit.

TIL Alex Sheen is my hero. I will be a better person . . .BISIW.

I feel like it's cheating, somehow, if you're still super-pretty after donating hair to Locks of Love.
Supernerdtastic
Hair doesn't make the person pretty, it's their strength, courage, and compassion.
SheparDox
Anyone who donates is automatically pretty to me. Those hair pieces mean a lot to kids with cancer.
sandygiraffes
I will browse imgur...because I said I would.
sandygiraffes
Would you look at that, I'm a person of my word.
Hugums
And to the front page you go, you magnificent stallion of a man.
Hugums
I'm well aware it's from Reddit but it's still gonna end up on the front page :|

I love seeing stuff like this come out of Reddit, knowing damn well that it's the same place where r/spacedicks lurks.
Neganigma
What the hell did you just do to me?!?!
TehGreatFonz
Are you kidding me, this is a great comment!
mymomtellsmeimspecial
I had to scroll back to make sure I saw the spacedicks.. Once I get it out of my head, it just keeps coming back!
xavierjmole
There are two sides to every coin. In this case, one side just happens to be 100% high-octane NOPE.

I know I probably shouldn't have but I laughed harder at this comment then I should have.
itsimpossibletofindausernamethatisnttaken
Thank you. Now I know what r/spacedicks is. I'll be enrolling in therapy tomorrow.
chemistrydoc
Good Christ Shamrock. Give us all a chance today. You've been all over the top comments. Do you even go outside bro?
MisterYoda
Shamrock always wins. I just gave up after the fifth one. I am not that witty.
ShamrockFury
Haha not so much on weekdays. Mon-Thur I claim Imgur as mine.
WhyDoesImgurAllowSuchLongNames
You'll have to fight PeanutBuddha, Moonkey, and chemdoc no matter what time you try and take over.
ShamrockFury
Throw me into the ring with the Heavyweights, I think I can hold my own. Except puns, I don't fuck with Moonkey when it comes to puns
WhyDoesImgurAllowSuchLongNames
If any of the others had made the same comment, I would have put you in with the "heavyweights".
WhyDoesImgurAllowSuchLongNames
Though did PB reduce activity again? Haven't seen him in a while

Or the few months when CanadaFuckYeahSorryAboutTheLanguage was the ruling title holder for Top Commenter.
WhyDoesImgurAllowSuchLongNames
Oh, forgot him, whoops

I donated 10 in. to Locks of Love a few years back, though to my dismay I recently found out they reject 80% of their donations. 1/2
yalliebaba
If you are wanting to donate to make wigs for cancer patients, Pantene Beautiful Lengths is directly connected to American Cancer Society
BakeryBitch
I've always wanted to do this but my hair is like my security blanket and I just can't give it up :(
passingthroughtoseewhatthehellisthatthingomg
Excuses or results...you can't have both. (not being mean)
echomike
Whatever hair they can't use they sell to help offset their costs. Even though your hair potentially wasn't used, you still helped.
echomike
I've donated more than 10 inches twice :)
gespair
They even sell some of the wigs they make! I wish I knew it before I donated, just wanted to pass on the info. 2/2
AngryRedBear
mostly to run the charity... that being said, there are similar charities out there.
AngryRedBear
Actually they don't make wigs at all.. they toss 80% of donations and sell the rest, then use those funds to buy wigs, and run the charity..
vedpears
I was looking for someone to comment on that. Same reason I refuse to donate my hair to them, no matter how many people tell me "you should"
mllym
Donate your hair to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths. They make wigs and give them to women with cancer for no charge.
keleri
It's true-- however, there are other cancer wig charities out there way better than Locks of Love. Anyone donating should research
mllym
Pantene's beautiful lengths! They give women with cancer wigs free. My aunt has a beautiful wig thanks to them. I donated to them recently.
Graphically
I grow my hair out to 17 inches before shaving it all off to be donated. Any suggestions on a different organization?
chalicehalffull
Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Mkay. I cut it last year, so another year of no hair-cuts should get me to the proper length to donate to Pantene.
