Let it be a reminder

I'm changing my party registration as soon as possible. If this is what I can expect from the Republican party, I won't be part of it. What happened in DC was absolute bullshit, and if you defend it, you are part of the problem.

Everyone who has supported Trump in the last 5 years has played a part in what happened yesterday.

Republicans have been dog shit since the 60s. You really wanna be a member of a racist party? Fuck them.

Glad that you see the truth of the Republican party now... but what took you so long?!?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And if THIS incident is what turned you, and *nothing* prior to this, you are definitely part of the problem.

Is this your first cue that being a supporter of the Republican party isn't the smartest decision?

Canadian here. Why do you have to register for a party at all? Can't you just decide that when you vote?

5 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

It's the analogue to Canadians joining a party to vote for leadership and the local candidate in riding associations.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Something about the primaries for each party requiring you to register your party in some states in order to vote for your representative.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In part it has to do with primary elections. As a Dem, I can only vote for which Dem makes it to the main election. It's weird, I know.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think party memberships are weird. Every country that has political parties has it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AZ you have to or your vote doesn’t count in the primary.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don’t have to! But in many states you have to register to vote in a primary — the race that decides which candidate will represent the

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

party in the general. For example, in many states only registered Dems could choose between Biden/Warren/Sanders et al for the pres race

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the info!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure! Thanks for being curious!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't tell me you don't have party memberships in Canada, we have it in Finland. It doesn't matter in general elections but in primaries.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We do, but our leaders are chosen by leadership conventions, for which there are a limited number of party members designated as delegates.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not everyone that joins as a member votes for the party leaders.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We absolutely do. For the same reasons.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well I mean, that's what "registering for a party" is. Party membership.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We don't need a party membership to vote. AFAICT this is never asked asked for at the polls.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Party membership is literally for voting in party elections/primaries. Has nothing to do with general elections.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and in my experience since the 1974 federal election and all provincial and civic elections this has never been asked. IIRC it is forbidden

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As for voting for candidates in your party, membership rules vary depending on the party. Voting to decide candidates is not widely done.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In the primaries you get to vote for your parties candidate, then in the general election you can vote for whomever you want

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, but because parties host their own in house voting to select one candidate they only allow their party members to vote.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So if you ever wondered why the 2 party system continues to be hot garbage, this is why.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To most elections, there are two cycles - the Primaries in which the party picks the candidate, and the general election in which the...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

populace chooses which candidate wins. In most states, to participate in the primaries you need to be registered with that party.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the general, any registered voter can vote. It works this way because the parties are technically private organizations.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. In the general and special elections you can cast votes how you see fit.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

However, in the primary elections(elections to select candidates to represent a party on a later ticket) you must be a member of that party.
