My dad shook John Wayne's hand when he was young. It's one of his favourite accomplishments.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Live in new zealand, island country and all that. Can't fucking swim.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm John Wayne at the first Thanksgiving pilgrims

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From Hondo. Don't ask what happens to his dog at the end...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hondo, based on a story by Louis L'Amour

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the Seventies, fuckin swimming instructors did that shit!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is how I learned.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He just did that because he knew the alligators were hungry.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I downvoted because "nuff said". That phrase is so unnecessary.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He did okay, for a guy who was at one time known as "Singin' Sandy."

I'm always amazed by people who can't swim, here in the uk anyway. You live on a tiny, wet island what are are you thinking!?

9 years ago | Likes 409 Dislikes 1

I don't get it either. It's easy. I've been swimming since I was a toddler. Aren't we born with the ability to swim?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm more surprised at the people who can't swim and assume its easy then die at sea on a summer break. RESPECT THE WATER, DAMMIT.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Australia here. Everyone can swim. And its 90% outback.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hawaiian here and I'm baffled when I meet someone who can't swim.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think the same of people from Jamaica or the DR, or anywhere else in the Caribbean. you live on an island motherfucker! Swim!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guess how many immigrants drowned this summer in germany.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When you're working class your parents don't have time to take you swimming as a child...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in Hawaii. I've met way too many people here that can't swim, my wife included.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. Used to live on an island in the Lowcountry. The number of people who couldn't swim there was astounding.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was like, You know there are fucking hurricanes here right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a Dane... that, times ten.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Dutch here.. yeah.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Live In S. Korea. No one can swim. For all intents and porpoises it's a goddamn island.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You missed the chance to say "water you thinking?"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

jokes on them , there are people serving in navy , who cant swim

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That the water here is awful? Who on earth wants to swim near britain? What do you think I fly for?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm in AZ, USA, didn't learn to swim til I was 17 and we had our own pool. but I lived in deserts and cold the rest of my life, so no need.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why did someone dv this? Is it wrong of me that no one taught me?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Born in Australia, grew up in a beach city. Can't swim. I learned how, just kind of forgot. I don't have the fat content to float either.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Note: even if you can swim do not swim in the canals or in the thames. Both will make you sick.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I swam right across the Thames and back once at Hammersmith. Felt fine. Mind you, I was spectacularly drunk.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

that's also impressive because the Thames has a strong undercurrent which can easily drown people. Now don't do it again.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

My girlfriend is one step weirder... She can't float. Like, even dead people float! How can you not know how to float?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm one of the no floaters. Can't stay still and float for more than about 5 seconds.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there's 2 parts to it, if she is skinny she may well have more problems than most, the other part is controlling breathing, take a deep 1

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

breath, hold it in, then breathe just enough on top of that, don't breathe all the way out or you sink

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

density issues, I can't float either.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

fuck, I mean buoyancy. Also do American's say "booey yyancy"? to match how they mangle "buoy"?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how do you say it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

boy-ant-sy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same as me then, so why say booey instead of boy when it's just buoy?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you seen your beaches?

9 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 7

Yeah all the more reason to learn to swim. It's not like you can avoid the ocean. You don't not want that shit in your lungs.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

As british i agree

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes. In Dorset, Devon& Cornwall they are quite lovely.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah I went to Bournemouth uni, perfect beaches.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Likewise in Northumberland

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The beaches where I live are actually quite nice. You could almost be fooled into thinking it wasn't baltic.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I'm impressed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is a nice beach and a fucking freezing looking ocean.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

how many Brits can actually get off that tiny wet island and swim to the mainland?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's about a 1 in 10 chance. Birds pick off most and then the sea creatures take what they can.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Urggh, your actually advocating swimming to France? We're not that desperate.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm from Michigan and it always surprises me. All these lakes and you can't swim!?

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

All that air and you can't fly?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Right? In addition to the giant freshwater seas we're surrounded by, you cant go 5 miles without hitting a lake inland.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Do you really wanna swim in those lakes, though?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Absolutely. Maybe not Lake Erie, and I've never tried Ontario, but the big three are excellent for swimming.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Erie and Ontario are both fine. Georgian Bay is my fave - freezing cold but crystal clear.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OMG, so fucking clear! I haven't been to Tobermory since a few days before 9/11. I should go next year...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It blew my mind that, when I went to Navy boot camp, people arrived being totally unable to swim.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

To be fair, if you really need to swim in the Navy, something has gone terribly wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It used to be really common for sailors to not learn how, as they felt learning to was tempting fate and they were mad superstitious.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As an army medic we had several people show up deathly afraid of the sight of blood, like passing out at a needle prick ON OTHER PEOPLE.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Incidentally, boot camp turned me into that person. I dunno who pissed in our corpsmans' cheerios during immunizations week, but (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2/2) I had to throw away the shirt and skivvies I was wearing that day from all the blood on them. Terrified of needles now :P

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was born and raised in Alaska; not a whole lot of recreational swimming there. That being said, we were required to learn how to pass H.S.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I am also born and raised in alaska, my mom dragged my ass to the chugiak HS pool every summer for lessons, was quite popular as I remember

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had to tip a canoe, hang out underneath it awhile while capsized, then flip it back over and get in. That was middle school.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I did this with my kids. Am I horrible? :/

9 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 7

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was how I learned. Saved my life at 3y/o when I fell into a frozen river.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My grandpa was abit evil ^^ He threw his kids in a box then into the water and told them to get out and learn to swim, 2 things at once ^^

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom hates swimming besides in the pool cause of that ^^ other 2 are macgyvers

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once tried out of desperation with my brother when he was about nine. It did not work at all, he still can't really swim.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya, parents are supposed to be a emotional support system.... not forcing a CHILD into an unexpected life/death situation!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well, yeah this is dangerous

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

As a guy who learned to swim this way, no, no you're not

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

That's literally where the phrase "throw them in the deep end" comes from.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think my parents ever taught me to swim. Once i was tall enough to touch the bottom of the pool i just figured it out at like 4-5yo

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did it worked?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

66.67% of the time based on his study. The study was cut shirt due to... some bad outcomes

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

none of them are ded, so, yes! :)

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Good dad!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom did this to me. I had a panick attack and almost drowned. Now I panick at the thought of being in lakes or oceans.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm usually panicking because of sharks or other large fish... Me no likey

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Former swim teacher - no, if you knew it would actually help. Just know, doing something like that can spook em, and that's hard to fix.

Like I recommended to another imgurian, look into adult swim lessons. I taught a 60 yr old woman to swim and she loved it! It's not too late

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I love the ocean and water but find it hard to jump in because of this (also didn't shower for months afterwards, was too scared to)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And that's why my bf is 24 and can't swim

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

That fear is a pretty powerful thing. If he's interested tell him to look into private adult lessons. Theyre easy and rewarding

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My favorite students were adults when I taught swimming. I could have someone swimming in a few weeks if they fully trusted me in the water.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's what we are going to do. I live for the water and I know our children will too so I want him to be prepared for the worst

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

good on you both

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My kid learned how to swim this way.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

my oldest son fel lin a pond and his mother stood on the bank and showed him how to swim. Moving her arms and all. LOL

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You understand the action in the above gif is literally attempted murder right?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Well I didn't do it "exactly" like that. But pretty close. Ida never let her sink.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh that's good, but it's still concerns me how many of these commenter's don't understand how the actions in this gif are unacceptable 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 I mean if I were that mom I'd literally shoot that guy in the face

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get it. It's really more less an over exaggeration. You have to treat it as such.
