Dude literally put his body on the line for science

I thought it was an onion article when I glanced at the headlines, it seems like a very bad idea to let that happen willingly.

But I stand corrected (and informed) after reading the full article. He sorta knew what he was doing, and the researchers improved upon his antibodies to create a broad application antivenom.

FTA:

“The team also went back to Friede's blood and found a second broad-acting antibody. "And so we added that in and that's when we suddenly saw this coherent protection that was happening across this large panel," Glanville says.

This cocktail of three components offered mice complete protection against 13 species and partial protection against six more — representing a set of genetically diverse venomous snakes from Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, and more.”

Bill Haast did it first...

Ok but did he ever make friends with any of the snakes? Like they refused to bite him eventually because friendship??

Science can be scary sometimes, but this, wow, he must have a death wish buried deep inside... but a real idealistic streak for him to keep at it...

he probably got the idea off the poison thing from Princess Bride

My first thought.

Better him than me

It certainly wasn't without cost. Dude went into a coma for 4 days when one of his snakes bit him.

All the snake venom you can eat AND a long rest? Still sounding pretty good

That's like doctor who gave himself ulcers to prove his treatment theory. That's some serious self belief

I'm sure the first time it happened, he started hy saying, "Nah, it don't bite!"

Now available for only $10,000 per dose in the US, not covered by insurance

I remember watching a documentary as a kid about a guy who kept a ton of snakes to milk their venomous for research and anti-venom. He talked about how often he'd been bitten in the line of research and I remember thinking how dangerous that must be for someone who looked to be in their late 50s. Turned out the dude was like 80. I've firmly believed ever since that people like this will be young forever.

You’re not on the wrong path, these people are sort of outliers in the overall data set of humans. He does talk about how the first few bites were dangerously close to killing him despite the preparation. Not only did he heal from them, he hasn’t lost a limb or functionality of one.

After seeing some graphic photos of post snake bite limbs, I’m even more impressed at his commitment.

The first Emperor of China firmly believed that medicines made of mercury and gold would make him young forever. Didn't turn out that way.

He should have added some snakes.

This may be Bill Haast. Pioneer of venom production. Created the Miami Serpentarium .

There's compelling data that shows a correlation between putting your body under stress and reducing your apparent age, but it needs to be coupled with strong mental discipline. Usually people age in the mind before they age in the body.

Bill Haast? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Haast

Could be, it's been ages

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, yeah. I'm 99% sure it was him

Bill Haast was an awesome guy. Got to hang out with him a few times at the Serpentarium in Miami. Even brought him a rare morph of coral snake

Surely there must be a better way!

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There... really isn't. A long-lived species that survives a diverse range of bites across a very long spectrum of time will produce a broad-spectrum set of antibodies to deal with the venom.

Humans are about one of the only things that could do this.

The ignorance is strong. Look it up.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really, no.
Most anti-venin is made by injecting venom into other animals, horses, pigs, etc, and then taking blood samples to gather the anti-bodies they produce as a reaction. Honestly, look up how anti-venin is made, it's fuckin wild.

Gonna have to look into it!

That is probably the most METAL way to put the welfare of others over yourself. The risk, the sacrifice, the humility of this guy ... he deserves mad respect and free bar tabs for life.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually he did;t do any of the stuff he did specifically to help anyone, he was just trying to build up his own immunity for safer snake handling. Then some scientist read an article some news types did about him and asked if they could get some blood samples and see what they found. He agreed and the rest you know from there.

That said he's clearly happy it's helping others. And thats great.

Well, there goes my smile.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be clearly he's extremly happy its helping others, he apparently just never realised it could till someone got in touch.
