I never had it before I was 30. Then I made a veggie version after my wife found a recipe and now I can't get enough. I even made a simple version the other day with a can of chili and topped with melted cheese curds and nearly ate it all myself. It's become such a comfort food for me.

Here's the recipe that she found from Hello Fresh -

Mushroom & Herb Shepherd’s Pie
https://www.hellofresh.com/recipes/mushroom-herb-shepherd-s-pie-60eef5789449ed22f62d8a20

If it's veggie, it's neither a Shepard or cottage pie. Shame on hello fresh.

*Not shepherd's pie. Mushroom farmer's pie, or something.

Told to a sexy waitress: "I'll have the Sheephearder's Lunch, a glass of milk, and a piece of ewe."

Just made Cottage Pie today. Still wonders me how's its one of the cheapest ready meals but takes me 1.5hrs to make.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m the same way with stew. I’ve got it down to a science to make it super quick easy and cheap! Not to mention delicious!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

as an actual user for hellofresh... i can just add it to my next delivery. thx

Just made a fantastic one tonight. Best comfort food ever

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I make a vegetarian shepherds pie called The Incompetent Shepherd’s Pie. Dude just can’t manage his sheep

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I used to go to a boarding school and we called it shepherd's shit because we got the runs from it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cottage pie is essentially the same thing made with beef instead of lamb

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tell him about Cornish Pasties

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're chili version is closer to the intent than the hello fresh recipe. It was originally whatever you had on had thrown into a pie crust

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your*

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You gotta make it with real shepherds to get the full flavour.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wuh? That' not shepherd's pie! There's no shep in it! It's not even cottage pie. Don't be all like 'I just discovered a dish' if you didnt

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

That's like me and scalloped potatoes with ham. I can just about eat the whole pan myself.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Brown a pork chop and throw it in with potatoes. All day!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Um, if it doesn't have lamb in it, is it REALLY Shepherd's Pie?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That would be a big fat No

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife makes Shepards pie about once a month. There's never left overs.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Eff Yeah...Ultimate diet food... spray oil the pan and pre-cook the first layer of mashed potatoes to make a "crust" for the pie, then fill

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it should be stew inside, massage top mashed potato crust into pre-baked and top with cheese... starches should bond soup creating heaven.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like paprika on top...among other things.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Might be worth checking out Tater Tot Hotdish as a fast option as well. Not exactly the same, but a midwest cheat.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And one of the best things you'll ever eat. My Mom makes a killer Tater Tot Hotdish and it's what I compare all others to.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it’s soooo goood, also have you tried stroganoff??

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When the wife's away, almost every night.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is it because she’s vegan and you’re not?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not a fan of mushrooms, so I use regular shepherds pie recipes and replace the meat with brown lentils. Just as delicious

I prefer cottage pie myself

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Just made some because of this post reminding me

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like creampies

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too *high five*

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What the fuck!! That recipe is not a shepherds pie. It’s in the name, it’s made with lamb or mutton. A cottage pie is made with beef.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

It's always hilarious to me when people get into semantics about a poor person's dish. Poor people make food with what's available

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

But they still know what to call it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Yeah I know. This is just their vegetarian version.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

You cannot have a vegetarian version of shepherds pie no such thing exists if i has only has vegetables in it its not a shepherds pie

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Chili with cheese curds on top is nothing close to shepards pie wrf?

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

It's all I had and had a craving. Called it poor man's pie.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Add some Fritos and you have frito pie, which is amazing.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Did it have mashed potatoes? It sounds delicious but I'm struggling to see how it's a version of a shepherd's pie

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah. If you Google it'll come up.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

What you don't know yet is that both shepherd's & cottage pies are fifty times better when you put HP sauce on them

4 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

Ah, our cousins from the UK have arrived. And no thank you, please pass the mango chutney

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I put in worcestershire sauce while cooking.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I use that and a bit of soy sauce, along with McCormick's Monterey steak seasoning.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Harry Potter sauce

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Frank's is better imo

Brown sauce?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's brown sauce, but a particular kind

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Gotcha. Not from over there, but fell in love with the stuff last time I visited.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for reminding me I forgot to get a new bottle when I got groceries the other day.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same.....I need to add this to my list so I don't forget it again.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A-1, too

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

No. You don’t understand, dude. HP sauce. I’m a yank and you should know this much.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Hewlett-Packard sauce? Harry Potter sauce? Health Point sauce?

I'm waiting for the Shepard's Pie/Cottage Pie debate

4 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 2

No debate, they're different things due to different ingredients.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Debate starts with the fact that it is spelt Shepherd's and not Shepard's! Whoever taught you to spell was a Lamb excuse for a teacher!

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I've only ever had actual shepherd's pie once and it was definitely better

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I rocked my Wife's world when I explained her favorite dinner was not Shepherds Pie. She still gets annoyed when I mention it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lost a lot of good friends during that last bloody debate. I do mean _bloody_ I'm not British.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about fisherman's pie?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But I like both.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

There is no debate. They are both great.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Question for those who know. Is there a name for other types but with different meat like ground Turkey?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know there's a fisherman's pie that uses white fish

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I appreciate the answer, sadly I don't like fish so to who ever enjoys it, please, enjoy.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're both good the provided recipe is neither as it contains neither.

Scottish egg? I keep meeting adults who never had one and they only tired it in my late 20’s

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You definitely need to try some delicious cream pies. Do a quick bing search for the recipes.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I love a good cream pie!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Probably not beans on toast

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love beans on toast. People at work think I'm wierd

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't have a PB&J sammich until I was 26. I'm almost 40 now. My childhood was a failure

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Realized I'd never had a PBJ in my 20's. Still haven't. 57 now...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was convinced I wouldn't enjoy one. Holy fuck was I wrong. So refreshing and still filling! It's like the perfect fast lunch!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about peanut butter and fluff? Go give that a go.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A pear

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I find shepherd's pie (lamb) is nice but can be a bit greasy. Cottage pie (beef) is more reliable - and cheaper.

4 years ago | Likes 512 Dislikes 3

Lamb is disgusting.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Any tough cut of red meat slow cooked with stock and mirepoix is good in my opinion.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only like shepherds pie, cottage pie just tastes like hamburger helper with more steps to me. I'm happy you know the difference though!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never used mutton, always ground beef.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My family always makes a version with turkey after Thanksgiving. Great use of leftovers

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can confirm both are great cottage pie is cheaper and lasts, saved my ass getting a good meal during some down times.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hubs uses half lamb and half beef - my favorite by far.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've only ever had actual shepherd's pie once and it was definitely way better. But cottage pie is cheap and easy and still delicious

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't stand ground turkey, it's much better roasted or as deli-style meat.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes cottage pie for the win!!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cottage pie is amazing, Shepherd's Pie is vile.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It bothers me immensely that it isn't called cowherd's pie

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I always loved when in collage the culinary school would serve “Shepard’s pie” made with beef. Idc if your a normal person….

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Calling it Shepard’s pie when it has beef but when you want to be a chef? Why?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The SHEPHERDS needed a meal they could carry out to the fields...the potato makes a crust....

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Step it up a notch and use venison. SOOOOOOOOO damn good

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hunter's pie for the win!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Half beef, half ground sausage

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

This is the way

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Dad is from Michigan. They have a highly Americanized version of this called 'Hot Dish'. Even cheaper and easier than Cottage Pie

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait you use Lamb in your "Shepard's" pie. Oh God, what have I done?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Home made or Store bought?!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think I've ever bought one. Or even eaten a bought one.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One made with minced chicken is also good.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I literally just leaned about this today

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I make it with venison

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Speed beef ftw!!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You think… lamb has more fat than beef?… noooooo sorry

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lamb mince as sold here is typically 20% fat. Beef mince is readily available at 10% or even 5%. Might be different where you live.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Huh lol thanks, idk we don’t have mince here ?? is it like ground meat?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing, as far as I know.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ground turkey works well also.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mum used to make it with leftover roast lamb meat, minced, rather than raw lamb mince. It was really good.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They can be made from lamb?! I want

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shepherd’s pie should ONLY be made from lamb. The clue’s in the name. With beef it’s called cottage pie.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Is bison under cottage pie or something else. Native American pie?

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Same question, but with venison.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hunters Pie?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you think about “Prairie Pie”? The nice thing is that ground bison could work in almost any meat pie recipe.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

If we're being historically accurate, Prairie Pie might use groundhog meat. Or gopher. Or possum. Maybe squirrel?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I appreciate this level of culinary specificity.

4 years ago | Likes 192 Dislikes 0

This is one of the few things that stuck with me from one of the Kitchen Nightmares UK episodes

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Specificity is one of the words I just don’t even bother using because I know I’m not going to pronounce it right the first time

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yea, you gotta have that shit on lock in your head before you bust it out in casual conversation.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Theologian

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

When I was a kid Shepherds pie was made with beef. That's what we called it. Hated it then, love it now!!!

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

Amen. My family were poor cooks. My uncle made the the worst Creampie too.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not nice to talk about your cousin like that.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Shepherds pie is lamb... hence the name. Cottage pie is beef.

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

Maybe originally, but in the US shepherds’ pie generally is made with cow.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Then it's not shephards pie. Maybe you called it that but think about it... shepherd... it has to be lamb

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Always assumed it was a pie that shepherds ate. ?‍♀️Cottage pie isn’t a thing in the US, it’s shepherds pie regardless of type of meat.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I couldn’t remember the term cottage pie and asked my husband to make cow pies for dinner. Pregnancy brain is awful.

4 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

The result of a creampie?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you Desperate Dan?!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If it makes you feel better, we have cow chip cookies here. Extra large chocolate chip cookies

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well now I want cookies. Damn.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I asked my, also pregnant wife what she wanted for lunch. She couldn't think of what she wanted and was at a loss for words. 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So she said, "Would you... would you make me... Shit...." and then a long pause. She didn't appreciate the suppositories I brought her.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pregnancy brain is a hell of a drug.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Turkey burger FTW. Limited fat and little of it is saturated.

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 6

Have you been introduced to the wonders of ostrich burger? Even less fat, doesn't taste like ass.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lift and should like it but have seen WAY too many contaminated ground turkey recalls for listeria, salmonella, etc. to ever trust it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Allowable levels of salmonella in routine testing is higher in chickens then it is turkey. So good food handling regardless is key.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We make these from the ground meat adding stuffing herbs then put cranberry sauce on the bun.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tastes horrid though - at least, to me it does.

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

Honestly, unless you have good beef I feel like burgers taste like shit anyway. The turkey takes the seasoning better, IMO.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I find always cooking it in red wine makes it taste a bit more like actual beef

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

cooking ground turkey with worcestershire sauce helps in my opinion

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ooh I gotta try it with turkey, my dad does it with beef and pirate sauce, a layer or green beans, a layer of taters, a layer of Mexican 4

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get the 93/7 mix... or if you're new to Turkey Burger, 85/15 will be more to your liking. Cook until brown throughout, no more.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cheese blend, and then another layer of mashed taters. Pirate in the first sentence was supposed to be picante

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ground turkey has a lot of turkey feces in it. I stay away from that stuff.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I feeeeel like this is hearsay / speculation... There would be food safe limits to feces, as is the case everywhere in the food industry.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am professionally certified on food bacteria. This isn't an issue I'm aware of.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is an article from 2013. But I'm 40. So that was recent for me.
