2005 to 2010 was the golden age of youtube, change my mind...

I've watched TMR EVERYDAY for years. YouTube refuses to put Sam Seder on my front page. I always have to thier channel.

I don't understand how Google won the lawsuit against Viacom. Youtube was mostly just pirated shit back then and I say that as a proud pirate.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i always delete trash from my watch history, it seems to help a bit

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This sucks as a fan of WH40K because there's this absurd overlap with fucking Nazis and 40K.

The algorithm is not working _for you_, it is working _on you_ to control your money spending behaviours.

For those that don’t know, 2 easy ways to get rid of shitty suggestions. History, if you click something, and know it’s the reason you get terrible YT suggestions, go into your history and fully remove the watch. It might suggest the video again, but it’ll stop suggesting based on watching it in the first place. The meatball ... menu is the more known one. It seems to work less than History removal, but don’t recommend channel and not interested seem to at least remove specific suggestions

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is likely confermation bias. You're just noticing the click bait because you don't like it. If you want suggestions for stuff you'll like then you need to manually search for it. Suggestions will get better if you do that.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find youtube weirdly starts recomending very right wing channels to me every three months or so it then takes a solid week of "not interested" and "don't recomend this channel" for it to go away again.... but all the studies that show social media has right wing bias are fake right?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And the YouTube AI gestapo censorship algo is SUPER FUCKING AGGRESSIVE. Just try using terms like "Israeli Terrorism" or "American Terrorism" and watch it not even bother to shadow ban your post, it'll just straight up fucking delete it in ~5 seconds. But it deletes far less controversial writing, too. It has turned the comment sections into little more than ultra sanitized human-drone speak.

I like watching engineering videos on a bunch of subjects, including transportation infrastructure.

YouTube is just: "OMG, you like TRAINS!? I'm going to constantly try and feed you crappy shaky 1 minute trainspotter videos for the next decade. And nothing you do can convince me to stop!"

1 year ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

I mostly watch challenge runs of video games and game related news from people I like but one time I clicked a video talking about some controversy surrounding one such person thinking "oh no! what happened?" and it was just some anti-woke nutjob ranting about how coming out as aro/ace will kill her viewership because people only watch her because she's a woman... plot twist: it didn't. What did change was my suggested content for like 2 months.

Dude I like gun jesus on forgotten weapons because I like the way he explains things and it's funny what he gets excited about.... so I get recommended so many rednecks shooting drink bottles...

Stuff that interests you cannot be monetized. The algorithm is not designed to show you what you want to see, it's designed to sell you stuff under the guise of showing you what you want to see

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Then I seriously wonder why I constantly get recommended channels with under 1000 views in my niche tech interests then? Because I can assure you, not a single one of the github and gaussian splatting channels make them money.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I make it a habit to watch my own videos once when I upload them, and YouTube now loves to constantly feed me content from the “let’s plays from unsuccessful YouTubers” genre.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think I might be sexist... The majority of YouTubers irritate the shit outta me, but for some reason women YouTubers irritate me the most. There are only three women YouTubers who don't irritate me.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The thing I hate the most is that it constantly loops back on itself. I don't want to watch the same fucking video over and over. I had to purge my watch history to get it to stop. And the fucking "personalized ads". I had to turn that off too because I was getting the exact same ad over and over. I was losing my mind

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because I work with buffoons who loudly listen to Joe Rogan and share their narrow-minded views I keep getting fed Right Wing Media and it's pissing me off.

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Nah, youtube just really likes to feed everyone right wing media because it gets the most engagement. I assume it's the combination of tricking normies into an infinitely self-perpetuating media ecosystem and that the left is more willing to argue in comments, being generally more literate and informed

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Gosh when you put it that way I'm down to believe it's a combination of things. Goddamn tech oligarchy.

I once accidentally clicked on a Big Bang Theory clip and YouTube thought it was my favourite show for MONTHS

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Youtubes search function is trash these days. It even shows the same videos when you keep scrolling.

I just want to watch some relaxing gardening stuff on occasion why am I being forwarded to alt right homesteads and hydroponic weed?!

After "The Acolyte" finished airing, I watched a single video discussing its overall writing structure, given that it was a flawed attempt at writing a mystery story. YouTube then decided "Oh, you hate women! Here's an avalanche of vile bigots and incels we platform for some reason!". I guess it's just linking the sort of videos other users who watch Acolyte-related content have on their lists, but it frankly says a lot that it didn't even give me other Star Wars content - just misogyny.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm very much on the left leaning side but I've noticed YT is happily pushing alt-right influencers. I often clean my YT history and it still comes through. Before anyone thinks they're clever, I'm mostly subscribed to techtubers and edutubers.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too late, I already think I'm clever.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm still trying to figure out why my Youtube routinely suggests random clips (usually just one at a time) in a handful of languages that I've never used.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP I hovered over a video while I wasn't looking that I would never watch, didn't click, and it started auto playing just the video. So now I have 10 videos from that dudes channel as recommendations.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YouTube is becoming total
Trash just like the rest of the internet.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In their defence, YouTube was a money drain since day one, losing millions every year. It was either shut it down, or let Google buy it and try making it profitable. When Google bought it, it was still losing millions. It's just recently they've started making money from it. It's either this way or nothing at all.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I must have somehow clicked on one of those shitty AI generated fake movie trailers cause that's all it gives me now

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I found that when that happens, I go into my history and delete it. That greatly reduces the algorithms recommending similar vidoes.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Heaven forbid you watch something that's slightly outside of your usual blend of content consumption!! The super aggressive way it jumps on anything different and spams your recommendation feed with similar content actually puts me off wanting to look at any more of it. "Oh, you just so happened to watch 10 seconds of a video that doesn't fit your usual viewing? Well bend over and buckle up because we're gonna ram that stuff up your ass for weeks, whether you like it or not"

1 year ago | Likes 175 Dislikes 4

open that type of content in a private tab.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if your cursor hoovers over something it counts as watching it... gods forbid you knock the mouse on the way to the bathroom and all of a sudden it's all "SCANDOLOUS REDDIT STORIES!"... give me my cooking and gaming channels back please.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

On the other hand I wish it would stop only showing me the same shit I've already seen!

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I like rewatching stuff I've seen already, but usually not an hour after I just saw it. If a song or something catches my interest I might watch the video a couple times, but not every ten minutes.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

"Oh, you like PirateSoftware? Maybe you'll like Soda Poppin'!" *Watches 30 seconds, decides it's not for me* "Here're 40 videos on Soda Poppin' being an armchair gameplay analyst."

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Watch one political video, feed fills up with it and usually it's RWNJ videos.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, you scrolled back to that bible-passages reading in order to mark the channel as "Do not recommend ever again"? Clearly you want even more channels that read you bible-passages!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me curiously wanting to know who the fuck Joe Rogan is, and then immediately being shown far-right fuck the left nonsense for months.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't have that issue personally, but I also use the "Not interested" / "Don't recommend channel" options YouTube has (when logged in), you don't even have to click open the video, just use the kebab menu.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

for some reason the mobile app doesn't have the don't recommend channel button. sometimes a i get so sick of a creator i put down my phone so I can block them on my pc.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It took me 3 days of *aggressively* doing so to finally get the equestrian stuff off my feed for a week. I do not care about your tall cows. It's still trying to put equestrian stuff on my feed, but at a reduced rate

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

"You accidentally clicked on 'wokeness is destroying video games', when you were actually trying to tell me to never show that channel again? That's cool. Here's more anti-wokeness shit, a bit of PragerU, and three Jordan Peterson videos."

1 year ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

Whenever I try to watch PirateSoft, it eventually autoplays ThePrimeTime. I like him, but for some reason the moment that happens, EVERY suggestion/autoplay becomes right wing garbage. He's a fucking programmer. Why.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Viewer statistics probably.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If only "don't show me this shit" actually worked on right wing content, but rage bait seems basically immune to being blocked since it generates so many clicks.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Just like Amazon and Google: "We know you bought a toilet seat recently, so here are a thousand adds for toilet seats." Bro, how many toilets do you think I have in my household that need a new seat? How many ADDITIONAL toilets you think I got in my household that need a new seat RIGHT AFTER I just bought a new one?

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That seems like a holdover from when Amazon was just a digital bookstore. It clearly does not work for household fixtures lol

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't order an urn off Amazon, unless you want your recommendations to get downright apocalyptic.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I really hate that about Amazon

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have found that deleting things that don't interest you from your history is a good way to prevent this from happening.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. As soon as I realize I made a mistake by clicking on a video, I open my history and delete it.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And YouTube peddling right wing media, I’m as fucking far left as it gets and I get non stop right wing content it’s so fucking shameless the way it peddles it

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s because you watch right wing stuff to outrage yourself.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But I don’t I watch left wing stuff that shits on the right wing like legal eagle for instance

Sky News did an experiment where they set up a fake account and pretended to be a 13yo Boy. They simply allowed the algorithm to feed them content via YouTube Shorts, and within just over an hour they were being shown numerous Andrew Tate videos without seeking out his content and despite him being banned on the platform at that time.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one that really likes their youtube recommendations? It feels like it's always giving me banger music and content I like. Whenever I downvote a song I don't like on the youtube music app it immediately skips the song and never plays it again, too, and tends to not play similar songs.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right click or tap on the three dots, and click "don't recommend channel" or "not interested".

I'll keep fighting Algoritmo.

1 year ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

It never works

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Or delete the video from watch history

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is the most important, do what madjo recommended but delete it from your history. That helps significantly.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Algorithmo counts that as ‘engagement’ for some fucking reason.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm constantly bombarded by right mens health bullshit. I have banned the channel every time and I STILL GET JOE ROGAN... I watched one god damn video from Jordan Peterson because I was interested in lobsters ... Not his lobsters, just lobsters in general. I like the videos where he puts a notch in them and gives them a snack.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YouTube doesn't listen to stuff like that. I did a test once where I repeatedly flagged a specific advert as being "inappropriate", got a "confirmation" that I won't be shown the advert again, to only be shown the advert over and over.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Completely different system.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You're right, it doesn't work with adverts, but it does work with normal videos.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeaa, it does nothing

Yeah no, I regularly press so t recommend channel and get another 2 videos from the same channel within the next 20 shorts

I have a user muted in imgur and it still tells me every time they have a viral post. Which is every day because he’s an employee or nepo child of the owners or something. Just the way websites treat their users nowadays, it’s made me leave for a year before because it’s so obnoxious. Stop shoving content down our throats that we don’t want, why is that so hard?

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Take your own advice and try it. Let us know how it goes. (we already know. this is for you.)

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It seems to work just fine for me. I've blocked many channels from my Youtube home page.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which would be great if we were talking about the don't recommend channel feature, and not the recommendation algorithm.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

huh, did not know that was a thing...

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Check your history with regularity, especially if you hover over a video for longer than 1 second.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don’t worry. It does fuck all. But you can think it does something

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

As a content creator, I can assure you it works VERY WELL and as intended. But you have to be consistent with it. Not just once. You're LOWERING the possibility, not removing it.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't know what to tell you, but it has worked for me, so far. If I see something on my youtube homepage that I'm not interested in, I tap those three dots, tap "not interested" or "don't recommend channel", and those videos don't appear on my homepage anymore.

Now, I don't know if it works if you watch the video and then click "don't recommend". But I do it before even watching. Usually based on the title and the thumbnail I know if something is for me or not.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It's not perfect, but it does have some impact on recommended or autoplay videos.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I would advice anyone to turn off Autoplay. Stay in control what you watch

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed, especially as it was found to push people towards right-wing channels in a very short time span.
