Always start with the finished product, right?
So this is where it started. In my first year of architecture school our teachers had us using those shitty pen knives that killed your fingers after using them for hours. So I analyzed the cause of the problem. It's caused by a hyper-extension in the first joint in your index finger. So I made a quick model that eliminated the hyper-extension.
I made my first model out of sculpting foam and couldn't use it to create a working prototype, so I had to duplicate the handle out of wood. This took some time. I started making them in my mom's basement, spending 8 hours a day sculpting handles and analyzing them.
Process shot. Multiple handles.
Once I had a form that I was satisfied with I created a template so I could cut as many blanks as I needed. After that I would sculpt them with a Dremel and sand them with a belt sander.
After making a few iterations I started having students at the school (Boston Architectural College) test them out. I'd analyze the way they would hold them and make adjustments.
Handles with notes. All part of the iterative process.
The form I settled on. At this point I'd been working on the handle for about a year. It's now the combination of 7 different orientations of cutting ergonomically.
Time to make some 3D printed models. I had to teach myself the 3D scanning software (NextEngine 3D scanner) as well Rhino (3D modeling software) so I could modify the 3D mesh that the scan created. After that process, which took like two months, I was able to 3D print prototypes to send out to architecture firms to be beta tested some more.
3D printing a prototype. At this point I added a magnet inside the handle to hold the blade in place.
MORE PROTOTYPES. After testing it in a few model shops at architecture firms in Boston, the only complaint I got was that the blade would get stuck in thicker materials. So I added a latch to utilizes the prefabricated hole in the blade to lock the blade in place.
At this point (which is about 2 years into the project) I partnered with a marketing firm to help me bring this thing to market. They suggested I make a wooden version. So I used my skills as a digital fabricator to CNC machine a wooden handle. This is a rendering of the toolpaths created to cut the handle out of a plywood blank
The blank being milled. I used Baltic Burch plywood with 1/64" layers to show the contours of the handle. The stepover on this finishing pass, which is like the resolution, is set to .005". That's less than the thickness of a human hair. Each handles takes about an hour and half to mill and another 30-50 minutes of finish work.
The internal workings of the Kiwi.
Me sweating to death presenting it to 60-70 architects and designers.
You have no idea how nervous I was. There were probably 60-70 people there, but I nailed it.
All the packaging was done by me. This is a laser cut box that I've designed for the plastic injection molded handles.
Some glamour shots of the kiwi
After posting it to imgur ArchDaily contacted me about publishing an article about the Kiwi!! Here it is http://www.archdaily.com/778556/how-i-developed-ergo-kiwi-an-ergonomic-craft-knife-that-your-fingers-will-thank-you-for
I almost threw up!

So...how did it go with the architecture?
TyGuy11
Beautiful process. Welcome to the long list of architects converted industrial designers ;) (im an industrial designer)
Seamusriley
Thanks! I've definitely found my passion, it just took 5 years of architecture school.
LvAllen
That looks pretty sharp.
ihavetwosnakes
Fucking brilliant.

As an occupational therapist, I came a little. Just a little.
IDontThinkSoTim
Did you call it the kiwi because you're New Zealish? (Asking as a fellow Bostonian)
Seamusriley
Nope, name comes from the handles shape. looks like the beak of a kiwi.

Annnnnnnd that's very unlikely.
Seamusriley
True enough, I only made $1125.00 in sales.
ProbablyDrunkAgain
It is a start, and I could see that doing very well in an art supply store. Best of luck to you. Never not support entrepreneurs.

ZachPutland
Reinventing the X-ACTO Knife is a bold move, but this is really well done.
Seamusriley
thanks! they're cornered the market for so long that there has been little to no innovation. hopefully this lights a fire under their ass.
SolidifiedSarcasm
If you're brave enough.
ThePizzaSlutAbides
You've got a lot of factory reject dildos there, OP
roketboy1987
As a machinist, .005" is larger than almost all human hair.
whostheboss
But can you use that to summon Velociraptors?
whostheboss
I didn't think so...
Illegitimatekitten
As a kiwi, can you explain how you came to the name? I'm not really sure on the link myself.
aliiak
Agreed, it doesn't look like a kiwi. I think they just thought it a cute name.... which is kinda yea...
lightlybreadedtoast
Do you have one for lefties?
ktheman
Based on the fact that he sells them from etsy you might be able to add the comment to a purchase for him to make a lefty
Seamusriley
It's bilaterally symmetrical, so both left handed and right handed people can use it.
lightlybreadedtoast
thats awesome. your awesome for creating this. i cant wait to buy one
Seamusriley
Thanks! I can't wait for you to buy one! You'll have to let me know what you think.
GrimmThistle
Some of the pictures show it being used with the left hand just the same as the right hand, so I might just assume it is symmetrical.
suckstoyourauntie
No, you'll just murder someone with it, devil spawn. JK, I was thinking the same thing, as a lefty.
ohmegatron
We are quite sinister.
lightlybreadedtoast
sshhh dont give away my secrets
BeautifulUnicornNurse
In several of the "glamor shots," the tool is being held in the left hand. Makes me think it's lefty compatible. Also, lefties unite!
lightlybreadedtoast
I saw that, but wasnt sure...you never know with those right handed folks, 99% of stuff we adapt for our own use, lefties unite!
umuziki
Could it not work in the left hand? It looks symmetrical.
whyexactly
If it isn't I'd imagine OP just needs to flip the design in software
lightlybreadedtoast
a lot of products are subtly adapted for right handers. lefties adapt, but it can be annoying.

KioWhat
Sooo... I want one... When can I have one?
FelixATR
https://www.etsy.com/listing/242123044/ergo-kiwi found them
causality
When you can stomach paying $65.00 plus shipping for an x-acto knife. He could make a profit selling plastic versions for five bucks each.
Seamusriley
Yeah, it's tough making them in small batches because the manufacturing costs are higher. Hopefully it takes off so we can sell them cheap.
causality
B-b-b-bullshit. If you had any interest in selling them cheap you'd be offering a plastic one instead of just "wood" and "fancy wood"
Seamusriley
Did you not read it or did i forget to add that we're making them out of plastic. thats what i'm referring to btw.
causality
Good to hear. You should also offer unfinished handles to both cut production time and allow people to make personalized versions
causality
Personalized versions you can then post on your social media pages to create more hype and strengthen your user community.

Jesus, $95 AU for plywood and $131 for bocote? And then $22 for shipping? You're cool, OP, but I cannot afford that.
SatanLordOfUpvotes
yeah, way too expensive. More expensive than the materials id be cutting
LadyBabalon156
Yay!

Have you checked copyright for kiwi? Being from New Zealand where kiwi is our national bird and used to brand EVERYTHING, might be worth it.
Ezzybells
Yeah, I have a couple of KIWI BRAND knives which are awesome. At first I assumed he was getting them to make his product. :/

They're so sharp and cheap too but they don't last too long.

Depends on what he applies to get trademarked. Different design marks are more likely to coexist than simple word marks are.

Studying civil to be an architect would be useful. Studying architecture to be civil will not be as much. Just to tell you so you could(1/2)

try to look into the future and not waste too much money/energy if you want to be civil.

If i may offer a tip, buy multiple, different colored lead holders for your most commonly used leads, so you don't waste time changing them
geraltofnvidia
2mm lead tip from H2 till B6 or something shit's awesome, never ever have to sharpen a pensil, or deal with broken lead. Also copic markers
