let's get this boy cleaned up nice and spiffy

Nov 30, 2018 11:45 PM

This poor kid has seen better days but we about to change that up lickety split!

Battery compartment not too bad with very minimal corrosion on the contacts so now let's crack this mofo open...may the force be with me!

CHEESE AND SPRINKLES!!! you seeing this??!! i noticed before opening that the buttons were sticking so we can see why. i don't really wanna guess what all the gunk this and it's all kinds of gross but we must stay the course.

all of the inside is a hell of a mess but luckily both of the pcb's seem to have avoided any of the filth and just need a rub down with some alcohol.

SFW BATH TIME! we throwing in all the plastics and giving them all a good scrub down.

now we putting the contacts in some vinegar to help give them a shine and remove any corrosion.

don't forget about the speaker

looking MUCH better after the wash

now we all cleaned up and ready to bring it back to it's original color

using some retrobright and letting it bake in the sun for a few hours

while the shell is baking we can now throw in a white backlight, bivert chip plus new buttons and a glass screen cover to finish it off.

battery contacts are now clean AF

BABY GOT BACK!

mission complete! thanks for tuning in and see ya space cowboy...

SFW bathing time haha.

That Gameboy used to contain bedbugs. The black specks in #3 and there's the impression of one in #4 on the left.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

You are 100% correct. That is a dead bedbug or a molt.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op you get back here and turn that game boy on so we can see!

Amazing restore of the famous brick. However, not a fan of subbing SNES controller buttons in for the originals. +1 anyway. Bromine -1

I’m good at taking electronic shit apart, not so swift with the putting back together. Salute you do shit that makes me feel retarded.

7 years ago | Likes 144 Dislikes 4

Make pictures as you take it apart so you remember how it goes back together, or film it. I did it with a camera I was fixing, saved me...

You shouldn't put the bar code on here. Now anybody can download your Game Boy.

Game boy Tetris is the best Tetris.

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

It's objectively worse than NES Tetris. NES is 10x20 and GameBoy is only 10x18. Maxouts are lower and the gameplay is slower.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Do you remember there were 2 NES Tetris games? One was way better than the other. You could play 2 player side by side.

+1 for teaching me about retrobrite

7 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 2

Go to a Sally's Beauty or the like and just pick up some Salon Care 40 Volume. No mixing or anything needed, just apply and let sun.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have to be careful with retr0brite as most plastics will yellow even faster and look worse than they did before using it over time.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can use hydrogen peroxide for yellowing LEGO. Works best on white and light Grey. Plenty of sunlight is the key.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is retrobrite and do I need if for a nes/snes restore?

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Removes yellowing in old plastic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retr0bright

Can't tell if joke but pretty sure is joke

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

40 volume developer is a 12% hydrogen peroxide solution with cream additives to make it so you can coat stuff like hair (or plastic)

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Okay yeah I was wondering if that was normal and I was just remembering them wrong.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think we all scrolled back to see them again! Good eye mate!

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Eh, if you’re going to restore it to “new”, I’d rather see GB buttons, personally.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I noticed right away they wre the wrong color.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Serial numbers on the back don't match. Did you have to switch the case backing?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That white barcode sticker had to be taken off because it wouldn't survive the cleaning process

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think the barcode is original anyway

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you show with new screen? Isn't it weird it's not green? Does that make it lose value not being green?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://imgur.com/m6UHIfv there are different colors available

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeee

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How are you going to deal with your bedbug infestation?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know that, but I figured it should match the inset one that was beneath.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loved the original gameboy but those things are AA Battery graveyards

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why I got the cable to plug it into the wall...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And now that its got a backlight, I can only wonder how fast they will go.

Another Eneloop vote! They’re amazing. Makes me feel good every time I recharge them that I’m not throwing (recycling) away more batteries.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How gd do those envelops last?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn autocorrect

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are pretty amazing, I still use the original ones I bought back in 2013 for my xbox one controllers, and they last for weeks in those.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also last a very long time without a charge in my electric toothbrush, but as for things with screens, I haven't actually tried them yet.
