I tried...

Dec 7, 2016 2:14 AM

A while ago, I moved to a new city to try to start my career. I did some unpaid internships even though I couldn't afford to, but I really wanted to make it work. After holding out as long as I could, I'm flat broke and my career has gotten no where. So after 6 years of being on my own, I'm moving back into my mom's house. I worked 70-80 hours a week just to save enough money to move out here and go for it, and I've failed.

Today, I sold my first guitar for gas money and I cried.

All through college, I slept on an air mattress because I had no money for furniture, but last year I finally bought myself a real bed and even a desk and it made me so happy! I've had them for less than a year and just sold them for a measly $100.

I've never felt so defeated. Sorry for the sob story, I know no one will see it and no one cares. I just needed to vent.

EDIT:

Thanks guys - My friends and family have been very supportive and I've cried to them enough, so I wanted to vent to strangers. I'm actually excited to go home, and I'm lucky to have that. I actually like my life quite a bit. It's just been a rough year and I can't help feeling a little down. So thanks for listening.

Been there. Had to sell my microwave and mini fridge for gas money once, lived off cold canned ravioli for a hot minute.

You tried &that's what counts. If you were anywhere near me I'd make you some consolation cupcakes. You'll get back out there.

Chin up, OP! Just a road bump that will lead you someplace else. Maybe where you started, not necessarily where you'll stay. Good luck.

Aw, I'm sorry it didn't work out, buddy. I hope it turns around for ya soon.

You tried and learned a helluva lot about yourself and what you are able to do. Though it does not seem like it now, it will serve you well

You have so much more than a lot of lazy pieces of shit out there. You did it, sure it didn't work but you did it. That is so invaluable.

@op I don't know what to say to be honest, but learn from your mistakes and hopefully everythings turns out well for you in the future.

Remember that sometimes its not that you fell off the horse that was the problem, its because you need a new saddle.

People often fail because they're obsessive and too picky. If you like music, I'm sure you can find a job in that field. Don't give up.

How much did you sell your guitar for?

"Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th." - Julie Andrews ...smart chick that Mary Poppins.. keep going...

find a job in your field at your mom's house? Build up experience (you've got some from internship) then have a job before you move again.

Man, I've been there. You bounce back. I know it sucks, but you aren't going to be back home for good. You have a winner mindset

You have t failed, you are part of a system who who failed you

'It'll all work out in the end. And if things haven't worked out, it's not the end.' Moved 1k miles after college. This quote saved me.

From your username, is it back to Colorado? What industry do you work in?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where were you? Where are you going @op? I did this exact thing last year, I'd love to help if I can

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'll get through it. I've had this happen to me twice. I had to sell a gift from my dad so I could have enough money to get back home, 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And I've always felt guilty about it. You'll figure it out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey next time get a second job, like bartending a few nights a week to help keep up with what you need. Also find a roommate right away. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 also don't give up. Try again

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i have 3 roommates, and still working 70 hours a week. interned on my days off. =/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't mean to complain, I just mean it's tough. my student loans are through the roof... but i'll figure something out. thanks =)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But you went out there and did it, as opposed to moving right back home without the effort. That is something. I hope you will try again

Why do we fall Master Wayne?

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

So we can get back up higher than before

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That scene always makes me tear up

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'm curious what your career was if I may ask.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

animation

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My cousin had a hard time getting into that too. Now he designs animations for slot machines. Not glamorous but maybe something to check out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you thought/tried doing your own thing and putting it on YouTube? Sorry. Probably stupid question.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Assuming he can get together enough money for the hardware/software required, then started actively making animations he could get >>>

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

<<< at least some money flowing. Enough subscribers/dedicated followers and he could even do a patron and make extra on the side.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unpaid internships should be illegal. So many companies abuse that and it's unfair.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

Pretty much this. You're often told to do things that aren't technically allowed, but can't complain without jeopardizing your career. BS.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same with student teaching

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Student teaching? What is so bad about it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't get paid and I'm working as a teacher

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought that they did get paid

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's usually right before you graduate. My last semester was as a student teacher and my mentor got a free semester of tuition for taking-
