You may be familiar with this scene. The Joker playing with Batman while Batman struggles to understand just what he is. You may also remember this specific moment where the Joker says this:

“You know, for awhile there, I thought you really were Dent. The way you threw yourself after her!”

Seems like a throwaway taunt until you remember one specific moment from the previous scene.

Batman arrives at the scene of the car chase headed by the Joker. Batman drives his Tumbler into the garbage truck in the Joker’s convoy. He turns around to face towards the Joker.

The Joker looks back towards the Tumbler and mumbles a “hm” seemingly mildly surprised at this turn of events.

Basically, that was the moment the Joker realized Dent wasn’t Batman. Of course he wasn’t, because Dent was inside that armored car. The Joker was telling the truth.

This is probably obvious and I was probably supposed to catch on to this easily but I think it’s an example of the watertight writing for this movie. Truly a masterpiece.

Watertight writing? Come on. Dude, seriously. Come on. Watch the movie and turn your brain on.

Of course its watertight. Otherwise the boat plot would have sunk before he could contrive more.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dent was a fit dude openly going against the mob. Even in the comics, a lot of people thought he was Batman until he became Two Face.

Heard this scene was improvised. Joker clapping was not in the script. Subtle, but really captures his personality. Such a good trilogy.

I wanna see the alternate universe where Ledger didn't kill himself and they got to use the Joker in DKR.

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

A play on the concept that all these villains only exist because batman does. Is he the solution or cause?

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The longest running bit on Batman and Jokers dynamic is - in a truly sick way - they need each other. Its fascinatingly dark and revealing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sidenote: This "cause or solution" paradoxon is one of the main reason I still consider batman to be the best written superhero series.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Man, there's just so many good batman arcs. Like the Killing Joke had an actual psychological question being can one bad day make you crazy.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I agree 1000%. As I said, it's just one of the main examples I would give if someone asked me why I consider it good writing.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like the part when the joker switches the addresses of dent and Rachel. Batman thinking he’s gonna save Rachel but instead it’s dent

8 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 2

Same here and how it ties into what the OP posted

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And the survivor knowing he meant to save the other person.

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

I don't think so. Dent seemed to think Bats wanted to save him, hence why he hated him afterwards

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

You're right, that was the result, but I think the Joker didn't know who Batman would choose (self vs duty), and swapped the addresses 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to sadistically destroy Batman's relationship with the survivor over the mutual knowledge of the failure, and the "wrong" person surviving.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If he just wanted Dent to survive and Rachel to die, he could have done that without giving Batman the (swapped) choice.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He went for Dent

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 22

If you rewatch..as Batman is leaving the building after the interrogation Batman states that he is going for her. Joker swapped address

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

No Batman knew the joker would switch, he needed dent to live.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

He literally tells Gordon that he's going after Rachel. If he knew they were switched, why lie to the Commissioner?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Because he knew they wouldn't make it, it's really obvious, I can't believe you guys didn't realize.

Such a fucking good movie. Fuck Heath was such an amazing and gifted performer

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Another thing to think about is that while surprised the outcome was planned for. The goal for the entire countdown was to draw out... 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...was to draw out Bateman. By going after Dent in the armored car he gets that. Whether it's him or not he knows he'll be there to protect

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gotta be said... Heath was the best Joker. Ever. Rip.

8 years ago | Likes 152 Dislikes 5

honestly i prefer Caesar Romero's clown prince of crime because it reminds me of the madness of the real joker along with Mark Hamills joker

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always reminds me of Mikeys review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFTmCqq-rYc

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While i agree, every joker had a different motive and purpose. Jack Nicholson's joker couldn't have been done by anyone else. Same here.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Vastly different incarnations of the Joker too.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jack nailed that portrayal. Cesar Romero's face is so wonderfully expressive, and Mark Hamill knows just how to use the voice itself as a

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

means of channeling Joker's personality. I really need to see the DK trilogy so I can properly assess what Heath brings to the table.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And then there's Leto

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

Leto was fine, get off the mindless circle-jerking bandwagon

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 24

Leto's Joker seemed a product of a careful study of all the source material with the intention of ignoring it as thoroughly as possible.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

There was some alternate universe one that they were going for and pretty much nailed it. Most of the hate just comes from being post-Ledger

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

For me it's more that it feels like the movie explicitly has to state how crazy Joker is. This counts for all characters of that movie - 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Leto seems to overdo every role he gets nowadays. His earlier work was much better, IMHO.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think we put too much stock in the actors. They work with what they are given, and the Snyderverse mostly gives shit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Having said that, he didn't need to do all those things to the cast. I wouldn't stop Will Smith if he decided to kick the living shit of him

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought his version was one of the Robin's brainwashed into the Joker ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is a theory with some weight, but that is all it is. A theory.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

leto's joker was great imo. he was a good representation of what a plausible modern-day joker would be like. its not a competition

think of it this way - take each joker and shuffle them all up in the batman movies. they would just be a bad fit in other movies

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

if you disagree with that feel free to tell me why yo uthink i'm wrong tho. but comparing him to other jokers is like comparing ice creams

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

probably because the other jokers tried to be like the joker, while leto tried (was directed to) act like something no one wanted

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

viewing him (and the rest of the cast) as a character that could fit into a modern city, he works. kinda like if michael jackson went joker

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

But his plans tend to work out quite well. Robbing a bank, Capturing Rachel and Harvey, blowing up a hospital, ... -

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

- ... being caught on purpose with an escape plan. The only one that didn't work was the loading two ferries with explosive ... -

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

- ... and being able to control them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But even then, he had a backup; he was equipped to kill both. Thing about plans is that some people have plans to ruin yours.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically every supervisor at work....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I recall reading a thread on Fark shortly after TDK was released that surmised the Joker’s strategy perfectly: he has a pyramid of 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ongoing plots which are occurring separately from one another, so even if one or more fail (which we may not even hear about on screen) 2/?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those which do succeed advance his overarching agenda of anarchy and chaos 3/fin

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am so confused - this is just two pieces of related dialogue in a movie. Am I missing something?

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

No, there's nothing profound about this. If you didn't notice it by the 2nd watch you clearly have a hard time paying attention.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 14

I've reread this post a couple times and still don't have a clue

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

just random fans gushing about the "sublime masterful" writing, when in reality they're grasping at straws of merely decent continuity

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Somebody in my gaming community tried to tell me Leto's Joker was better than Heath's... Said Heath's was a "methed-out hobo". We don't talk

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Good...you don't need toxic people like that in your life

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i just thought Leto's Joker was the much younger, punk version. i think BOTH versions offer us good lessons about how NOT to be.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Sure, but it wasn't the joker. It was some new character.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Punk? To it seemed like a clown got raped by mumble rap.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't get it. I assumed this taunt was a reference to him throwing himself from the building in an attempt to catch Rachel.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

It was. It was also when the Joker thought it was Dent until the chase.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Yeah, I really don't see what's so incredible? Are movies so shit nowadays it's considered brilliant writing to reference earlier scenes?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

To be honest I thought there is something incredible and rereading for over an hour before I realised what he's stating is just plain fact

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But in pop's defense he did say its obvious

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a well composed post, I'm just confused that it's doing this well, with so many super impressed comments

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly? Yes. Most movies are really that crappy.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It ain't that watertight, the scene where he catches Rachel just ends with the Joker still in the penthouse and Dent locked in a closet.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 9

Also there has been in history both Batman inpersonators and other people like Alfred dressing up as Batman

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But the Joker didn't know Dent was locked in the closet. And that scene is before both that OP is referring to here. Loft -> Chase -> Cell.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Wait, but the Batman is Dent scenario isn’t even a thing until after that, & @OP how’s joker confused if D is in the armored car?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure, but he's still right. The scene never concludes. What does the Joker do...just leave when he can't find Dent? Did he get bored?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fast editing to cover up plotholes and nonsense are like the Christopher Nolan trademark, all his films have it in spades.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 20

This. In inception they don’t even explain where he got the coordinates for the lab considering he gave them to himself

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Some say that's part of the whole "is Cobb dreaming the whole thing" issue.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Nolan Scapegoat “he’s dreaming it all” to avoid explaining the plot properly

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think your derision of Nolan is a bit strong, but I agree that his stories are kinda loosey goosey with plot holes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I thought it was because he literally threw himself out of the window after her when they hijacked the party earlier on.

8 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 8

It was. This is just retard people tryin to sound smart

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

That's correct, I think this post is wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Glad it wasn't just me, I was kinda scratching my head to understand OP's logic, no offense.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

no no, he's not saying that isn't why he said that, he's pointing out when the joker in the previous scene realised it wasn't dent

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That was why Joker thought Dent was Batman. It wasn't until the chase that he encountered Dent and Batman in the same place at the same time

8 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

So what's the point of this post? To acknowledge a clearly obvious reference ? No wonder movies are getting dumber...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I thought he knew Dent wasn't Batman, because the joker looks up and down the street while toying with the convoy, waiting for him to show

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

(4) breaks him which begins their f'd up relationship in the movie's universe but I don't know shit about film. Probably my BS take on it

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(3) have considering how destructive it was. I think it was this moment he considered the potential chaos batman is capable of if he...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sure, but his plan already involved the Batman capturing him during that chase sequence. Why would he have planned that IHT Dent was Batman?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

He wanted to get caught. He didn't think it was going to be Batman catching him, but the cops.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

He wanted to get caught so he could kidnap Dent and Rachel, so he could make Batman decide between them. Hard to do if 1 of them IS Batman.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2) I took the "Hmm" as being mildly impressed by what he's capable of doing (taking out the garbage truck) which is a funny reaction to...

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I agree with this. He was looking around as he was baiting Batman and the "Hm" is a comical underreaction to an extreme event.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1
