It's my cakeday. Here are some facts about my imaginary country that I favorited.

Oct 29, 2017 2:18 PM

Thanks to a merger earlier this year all government regulated lottery and casino games, sports betting and horse racing are under the same company. Still non-profit.

Still a thing that happens every summer in Sonkajärvi. I am not entirely sure why.

Been to Tornio, didn't realize this was a thing until I saw the original post. http://www.torniogolf.fi/?lang=en

This one is outdated. Singapore and Germany now have the world's most "powerful passports" with Sweden, Finland and the UK in the top 10.

Most people nowadays go to Estonia for their cheap alcohol, and even that is more expensive than it used to be. I am going on a heavy metal cruise to Stockholm in February though, so there's that.

Can neither fully confirm or deny this. There are definitely Ikea furniture named after places in Finland but not sure if it applies like this all the time.

Each doctoral candidate acquires their own, universities don't just hand them out. Costs about 1000 euros total but you can borrow the sword for the ceremony.

A lot of resorts here are starting to have their own variant of an ice hotel. Lapland is definitely worth the visit, no matter what time of the year.

In the same way competitive eating or wife carrying is an official sport, yes.

Cat tax

We don't live together anymore but Roope is perma-tired of my shit. Or just tired.

Torille!

Declawing a cat is the equivalent of cutting the end of a human's finger to the first knuckle. Should be outlawed everywhere.

#17 since Nokia phones are from Finland, this doesn't suprise me. There is more risk to damaging the ground than the phone.

8 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 2

It's okay because there get that extra 7 km² to replace Nokia-damaged land

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

As a Finn, can confirm.

a friend of mine found out about #10 and has studied there for the last year and a bit

I think #9 gives the wrong idea that you would use the ferry to go across the sea to buy alcohol. No no no, you buy it on board of course!

It should be noted that there are still fees associated with attending german colleges. They ca run as high as 500 euro per semester.

But the one I went in Hamburg was 270e for winter semester and included a public transport ticket for the whole time. A pretty solid deal.

Perkele!

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

What does that mean to you out of curiosity I have heard many different meanings

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I first heard it from the name of a heavy metal album. I've never found out the meaning, I just know it's a Finnish swear.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have read that it means Satan's grandfather or Thor in a way

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Profanity. People speculate the original meaning was the native Finnish name for a god of thunder, but now it's just another name for satan.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shouldn’t you be calling a game instead of browsing Imgur?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The Scandinavia one is nonsense; in some definitions Finland is included while in others it isn't. There's no formal definition so... 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 24

Finland is part of the Nordics, but not Scandinavia. It's based on the scandinavian dialects, and Finnish is not one of them.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The name comes from the mountain range going through Sweden and Norway, the Scandes. Which is the backbone of the Scandinavian penisula.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You mean through Sweden, Norway and Finland? Check your geography.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Blame the Swedes, if it weren't for there centurys long rule over the Finns we might not be asking whether or not Finland was Scandinavian

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

If it weren’t for us you’d call it Russia

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

This is true.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yup. Finland is a part of cultural Scandinavia but only the northernmost part of the country is geographically prt of Scndinavian peninsula

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Well...no. Noone, and I mean noone, in Scandinavia, says that Finland is a part of it. Only those outsiders who suck at geography and don't

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

know the difference between Scandinavia and the nordic

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Eh. No-one? lol. I'm from Finland and a lot of people here do consider themselves as Scandinavians when it comes to culture.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah, well, that's what you get for not being Scandinavian!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please elaborate?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Finland is not part of Scandinavia. It’s part of Nordic countries which include: Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Again, there is no formal definition, and different definitions used around the world include a different set of countries. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

2/2... And you're also missing Iceland in the set of Nordic countries, so evidently you're just clueless on the subject.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Scandinavia is the area around the Scandinavian mountains. Finland is not a part of that area. Plain and simple.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 32

Actually, Finland *is* part of that area. Denmark, however, obviously isn't. So much for 'plain and simple', eh, numpty?

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 8

Were you not incorrect, I'd agree.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 29

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 10

2/2... both are correct, depending on context.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 13

Scandinavia as cultural boundary: Norway, sweden and Denmark. Scandinavian shield as geographical area: Finland, Sweden and Norway.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, it was the one I thought about leaving out. If someone calls me Scandinavian, I'm not going to go "Actually, 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

I'm Fennoscandian, thank you very much." 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

I would. I don’t want to be mistaken to be in the same club with Sweden.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Actually no. Official definition states that Finland isn't part of Scandinavia, but most people mistakenly count it to be part of it anyway.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There is no formal definition, numpty.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Saying it's nonsense is even more nonsense. Finland is partly included in the geographic definion (mountains), but not in the cultural one.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 8

Actually, it's *especially* included in the cultural one (for obvious reasons...). It's the geographic one that is more debated.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Finland is only included by idiots outside the Nordic countries, which I suppose has made it quite a popular assumption I suppose.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes, but doesn't change the fact. There is no formal definition, it is what people decide it is.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsXMe8H6iyc Only 1 is correct, have some internet guy tell you why

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually, he makes it pretty clear there is no clear definition.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You're so fricking wrong it hurts. Scandinavia is Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Nordic countries are Scandinavia + Finland + Iceland.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

Yet Finnish town Oulu is named Capital of northern scandinavia

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Se että Oululaiset on kuutamolla siitä mikä on Skandinavia ja mikä ei, ei tarkoita että Suomi sinne kuuluis.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Again, that's just one definition. In some cultures, and generally in the English language, the definition includes Finland and more.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Finns are historically and culturally balts, not scandinavians. It might be a common misconception, but it's still a misconception

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Are you an idiot? Finland was literally Sweden for like five hundred years, the beaurocratic language was Swedish

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sure. Go tell the finns they're really Swedish, I dare you

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes. Read the fucking article you linked to, illiterate shit cunt. It's right fucking there.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

It, uh, does list Finland under the same.section as the baltics there, in the 'sometimes' category, specifically because people get it

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It says "Sometimes also:" you fuckweasel, and only does so because of cunt stains like you.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 4

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's amazing. They cant scratch the shit out of you, your furniture, etc. People say it's pretty unpleasant for the cat, mine seem fine

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 67

Let's cut off your dick, people say you won't like it but you can't spread your DNA and that's amazing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Ok Go ahead and chop your fingers off at the top knuckle then tell me how you feel crap for brains

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Are you fucking retarded?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

You took the risk to make your pet suffer, for the well being of your furnitures. that's fucked up, don't try to justify it.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 4

Would you be fine if somebody chopped off the first knuckle on all your fingers? Because that's exactly what declawing is.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 4

If you don't want a pet with nails, don't get a pet that is born with nails. Idiot.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

How about removing their testicles? "If you dont want a pet with testicles, dont get a pet with testicles, idiot."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Hey asshat, do you realize that declawing a cat is not just "trimming the nails". Its very painfull procedure that may lead to many...

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

...problems in the future like late joint problems, biting problems and they will be in pain when using litterboxes (digging).

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

This was my parents cats 20 years ago, I dont currently have a cat. None of them had any problems.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You know, dogs can't bite if you remove their teeth.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I mean they have quite a bit of power in their jaws so best to just remove those too.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Bears cant bite with no teeth, but people generally seem pretty happy to upvote that russian bear with the models.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Totally against declawing but I'd like to see some actual reliable evidence that it's as bad as it seems. Like frequency of complications

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I've read that and there is very little real information there. It just says that it can cause issues but no information on frequency or

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anything like that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My cats have their class, in-laws cats do not. They don't seem disadvantaged but all I've ever seen is sketchy evidence that indicates that

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They should basically be crippled by the procedure and not jumping a billion feet.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Again I'm against Declawing I just want evidence to back my position and what I've found is sketchy at best

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
