Full disclosure, to make this easier to explain - the oldest and youngest are both technically my girlfriend's sons. But they live with us. The middle is my daughter, and she lives with us. We've lived together a few years, so essentially they're all our kids. Anyway, here's the update to my original post (here: http://imgur.com/gallery/lrujQUe) - To make it easy for the kids to get used to playing and for me to get used to DMing, we had planned on playing a really watered down version of a d&d campaign, Monster Slayers: Heroes of Hesiod. You can find it in a couple of places. (It's free!)

At first glance, it's a cute, little, easy to grasp game. Not a whole lot of customization available, which is probably good for those trying to understand the basics. Anyhow, after a text from my girlfriend telling me she'll be late, I offered to get the kids. Only to in turn realize I myself was going to be late as well. I had planned a big, medieval style dinner to get the kids into the spirit and that was quickly rushing into "It'll be wayyy too late for the kids to stay up if we do that" territory. We actually debated not playing last night.

Me in the car on the drive home.

I realized "I cannot waste this opportunity. We must play! Also, 5.000 people on imgur upvoted me. I can't bail now." I decided they'd get by just fine with pizza while we play. The kids were way excited by this. My failure is their reward.

Good job dad!

So my girlfriend gets home, we start setting the scene, the kids are getting way into it. The monsters are supposed to attack immediately, but I let everyone roam around and try to find anything that might benefit them. In the middle of this the pizza comes. Outside, while I signed the credit card slip, our oldest says "This is AMAZING! Can we play every night?" I said there's no way we'd have that kind of time. So he asks:

"Can make it a weekly thing?"

At which point I feel like the best DM/Dad in history. Mind you this was before ANY real action. That feeling lasted until we got back in and he looted a barrel and found two potions. My daughter asked "If we find stuff like that and people need it, can we give it to them to help??" hashtag:Proud-Dad. And our oldest goes "I'm keeping it all for myself!" and I had a flashback to earlier in the day when he asked like 3 times if we were allowed to attack each other or steal from each other.

MFW I realize my oldest son is going to kill the party.

So now I'm tasked with my first struggle as a GM already, how do I convince him to play fair? Oh boy... Anyhow, they are immediately attacked by the terrible BULLETTE. Which of course attacks my girlfriend and everyone thinks I did that on purpose. It attacks the highest HP! Back off family!

The devastating, but ticklish Bullette

Our youngest son dug in the ground to search for materials. I told him there were no random materials buried, but he did find a beetle and a worm. I thought he would be disappointed. However, he thought that was the greatest thing ever and put them in his pocket.

Meanwhile, my girlfriend attacks and does the first damage of the day!

Only to have it turn around and swallow our youngest son whole.

Oops.

But? He tickles the Bullette on his next turn and rolls high enough to be spit out!

Nice roll, kid.

After about 2 minutes though he screams in terror: "OH NO DID I LEAVE MY BUGS INSIDE THE MONSTER?!??!!"

He was not joking. He was fully engrossed in this world and in love with his pet bugs. I said "No, they stayed in your pocket. Would you like to check to see if they're still alive?" He said no, which really upset me, because I wanted to tell him there was magic inside the Bullette that turned the worm until a big, furry, muppet-like snake.

Fine. Have it your way.

Now, you might have noticed I haven't mentioned my daughter much. This is when she asked if she could climb into one of the open barrels to hide from one of the monsters. She's a very cautious girl. That's when I realized she had spent the entire game moving the opposite direction of either of the monsters on the board.

No, they can't see you, dear.

At this point we had been playing for nearly 3 hours and they had only killed one of the four monsters. It was an hour past their bedtime, and I decided to pause the game. I honestly thought we'd have completed all 4 in an hour or two. Who knew it would take so long?

Thanks for reading.

All in all, we loved it. It had its ups and downs and I'll have to learn how to manage our oldest's evil side, and our daughter's cautious side, but as soon as we finish this small campaign I'm going to write a campaign that plays to all of our strengths and weaknesses and holds the kids' attention. I'll be using some of the great ideas people mentioned in my last post. Thanks guys, you made this all much easier for me and started a new family tradition!

One of the main rules of D&D ,its ALWAYS going to take at least 4x the amount of time you think it will

Grats OP! I spent four days Building a diorama for Warhammer, and about 10 painting two armies. My son can't be arsed to play :-/

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Grats, DMDAD. Great read and sounds like an awesome time. You're the man.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I did this with my kids. Their characters were their favorite stuffed animals, "rescuing" other stuffed animals. They loved it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm 45 and an now the DM for 5 13-14yo guys (1 is my son) who just love ad&d.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Campaign time!!! (Pulls lucky dice from her backpack.). Let's roll ;)

There is a little Italian manual about 4 levels to get to the first level. It aims to create relations between players and teach the rules

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Manuale dei livelli infimi".It might be in English too. We're having such fun!Last great thing was a triple critical trying to punch a rat

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

marry your gf asap, you can't risk losing that many players...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good point. I'll work it into the game so she's adequately confused. "You find this ring. You have to accept as I'm the DM."

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm newly part of a group that has been around for near 30 years, and has members aged 5 to near 80 sometimes, it's a helluva game.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This is the dream of my friends and I. Our kids are almost all old enough to play. It is coming soon.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want to know how it goes when it happens!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's always that one guy in every group that considers killing the party for loot. I find it hilarious that it's an 11 year old mentality

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As someone who was once an 11 year old boy, I'm not even a little surprised. It's hard to unlearn competition for cooperation

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't want to get too personal but...How do you have a "middle child" together and a child from another partner older and younger?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The oldest and youngest are his SO's from a previous relationship. The middle is his from a previous relationship.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can DMDU be a weekly thing?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My dad ran games for me when I was 10. It was the best, I always loved gaming with him and still do, when I can.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Worth mentioning, my dad only came into my life when I was 7, he's my step-dad, but he's my dad. So good luck on that score too!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Awesome! Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was awesome. Great way to stimulate creativity while addressing inhibitions and struggles. Plus fighting orcs and shit. Nice work op

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like the way the eldest thinks.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love the concept of 'I can't find friends I GUESS I'LL JUST HAVE TO MAKE THEM'

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd keep give the 11 y/o loot that is only helpful for the others 2 out of 3 times. Then put him in situations where he needs their help 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That's good accommodateing for play styles. Award heroism XP and later have them promoted to Palladian. Make it a big deal. Full ceremony.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

These are fantastic ideas!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The first time I ran a D&D game for my kids (twins, age 7 at the time), they rescued the goblins' dog instead of the captured NPCs.

10 years ago | Likes 170 Dislikes 0

That's a legitimate possible future outcome with these kids. I'm thinking about building in quests to our campaign where they can get pets

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

You should look at giving them familiars, can make the pet experience a useful tool for the dm to give info and needed skills to a party :)

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Now I just have to wait to have kids so I can learn how to play.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why wait? Steal some kids!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There will be a good amount knocking on doors tomorrow night; ) but then the county jail doesn't allow that big of table top game

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me and my friends have been playing for 6 years. It gets kind of ridiculous when you're playing with 6 almighty transcendant beings.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This is why I like to reroll characters often and try to keep the campaign under level 8.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dam mage the awakening group is making plans on killing the almighty. They recon he's just high level mage . They might win.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People are always like "D&D? Nerd alert!" (unoriginal bastards) but then anyone who tries it actually enjoys it.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I had a group of 3 meat head gym rats playing at one point. They loved it. Was the only time I heard feats & prestige classes discussed (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2) over "bro tips for gainz" at the gym. Went on for weeks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They either try it and love it, or go play Fantasy Football and think it's different.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

D&D is such a great game that almost every PC game that tries to emulate it fails to meet expectations.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yea. I tried to play a D&D type mmo but I couldn't get into it..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is cool, I'm getting into DnD with my Mom, Dad, younger siblings(13 and 14) and my SO. We already tried a campaign...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

With my dad as the DM, but we didn't play again because he wanted to have a character and not be a DM... so, I picked up the torch...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We are going to have our first session sometime next month, because this month has been really busy, but I'm looking forward to playing...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

with my family and having fun with everyone. I'm also looking forward to learning how to be a DM. I love making stories and my Dad would...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

have so much more fun playing with everyone else instead of being a DM.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I Totally favorited this. I want to reread and laugh and plot my own sons indoctrination *cough* I mean introduction to D&D.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Talk like this makes my brovaries twitch.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You made me snarf my coffee haha

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Back in high school a few years ago there was an "rpg club" basically a d&d club. It got to be a good after-school past time I enjoyed 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I eventually learned that the club didn't have any proper d&d stuff so eventually I donated ALL of my d&d items and

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/3? they enjoyed it so much that I'm sure, even to this day, they still use the donated d&d items for their campaigns :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Side note: Mr. Chandler if you're reading this, like I said back then you're welcome for the d&d stuff :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your the man now, DMDAD

10 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 1

DDM

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Your"

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

DADM?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

IF YOU DON'T GET A SHIRT FOR FATHER'S DAY THAT SAYS "DMDAD", WHAT HAS THIS ALL BEEN ABOUT

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nah, I just have pretty great kids.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Your oldest son will be a great villain, commanding an army of bugs and tearing the family apart. Welcome to D&D, happens everytime =p

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I DID THE ILLUSTRATION OF THAT BULETTE!!!!! I'M SO EXCITED

10 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 1

It served us well! :)

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I'm glad! Loved reading about your game, by the way. I tried my hand at DMing for the first time very recently as well.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Great work! Do you do it professionally, or just for fun? Any more work to look at?

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Yeah, I'm a professional. Here's my blog, conveniently updated with the rest of the D&D work I did: (link in reply)

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You did the remorhaz! They're my favorite monster! Thank you for making them awesome. I remember the first time I brought them into game.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow! I was really impressed with the work in the Monster Manual! I'm running a 4e campaign, but I preferred the 5e art for the bullete 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

and the tarrasque, so I showed my group those pictures. Fantastic work! 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This was for everyone who wanted an update. @dagrmaan @Cyanosis1184 @twicetheheart @quietwalker @XPACK007

10 years ago | Likes 251 Dislikes 2

Add me to future lists? I've fallen in bro love with your son

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I too need to hear the continuing adventures!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha this is amazing!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I still insist on joining the party!!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can this be a weekly thing? Please

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Congrats! Remember: the rules are a guideline and fudge the dice if it'll make for a better story.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you. Very much appreciate the update. My kids are a bit older already, and we're gaming too :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd like updated too please

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Keep them coming man

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who always leaned Dark Lord, I have faith in your oldest embracing his inner evil.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd like on the list, mate!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Need more of this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

May I also be in the loop? You made your game interesting even in our eyes. Great job, op!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like something my kids would love thanks for the update!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

can you add me as well to any more updates you might make? this actually made me smile quite a bit, thanks for that

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you delivering OP, that sounded so fun!!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should make up an adventure for them that you play a little through each week, like build them up for a neat little storyline all theirs

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There were people who DIDN'T want an update on this? I'll read all of them if you keep them coming. :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great job! Those are the same things you deal with in adult groups too.I spend hours wondering how to get adults to play nice with eachother

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You guys are all so nice. I'll definitely add everyone on here to future posts. They may not come weekly, but I'll do update posts for sure

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Add me to future lists! And also, I demand a weekly update!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

FYI, I highly, HIGHLY recommend you look into Dungeon World. It allows for D&D play, challenge, and fairness, with a little less complexity.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's more streamlined for time and you'll do a lot less rulebreaking for your kids.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Add me to future lists boss, this was great!

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Same! This sounds awesome!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too please!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same! Please!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too! Love this

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op dont forget the people in this thread too.
