What kind of footprint is this?

Dec 18, 2020 4:29 AM

Yesterday, we had the first snowstorm of 2020 (FYI I’m located in the NE of the US) and this morning I decided to go for a hike. I noticed a strange looking pair of footprints. They didn’t match a dog’s or a deer’s, which are the only two animals with prints even remotely large enough as these.

Unfortunately I also saw this nearby. There were many more prints like this, leading all the way back to the parking lot by the base of the mountain I was on.

Now, the strange prints crossed the main pathway and zig zagged down the mountain. Right where it intersected with the path, I saw flecks of blood on the ground. (And followed those flecks to determined the injured animal was clearly a dog)

This is just a nice shot of untouched snow. But I made this post to see what you guys would think. If this is a no brainer for someone, please lmk. What kind of footprint is the first image?

Some nice deer tracks for you

The top of the mountain, decorated with ornaments made by local kids

A happy doggo, thankfully unrelated to the bloody prints. (Also my pupper tax)

#1Rabbit/Hare #2 Canid, knowing the size would help narrow it down a little. Could be a fox, a dog, a wolf...

Looks like rabbit to me. Front legs land close together, back legs come in front and leave the wider marks in front of the front leg mark.

I don't think that is the wolf's or fox's blood. I think it is its prey's blood.

The first one is bunny tracks. The spray of snow was the direction of travel. The two holes to the back are the front feet. The larger ->

holes in front are the hind feet.
