Brent Weeks

Night Angle series is about an assassin that tells the story of how a few people can kill an entire government. granted there's a ton of magic, and training, and wars going on. But the devils in the details, great story, there is a detail that grinds me a bit. But overall it didn't mess bad enough that I couldn't finish the series.

Hard Luck Hank

Great story and series. This is the story of one poor guy that just keeps getting the shit detail. Sci-fi comedy, and plenty going on to keep everyone interested.

Dresden

Snarky wizard investigator that just can't seem to get along with anyone. There is a ton more to it then that. But really if you want to read about a wizard that finishes what he starts, oh and rides Sue the T-Rex (granted it was one book but it was pretty epic story telling.) Anyway these books do a great job with mystery and magic.

American Gods

Every nerd promotes Gaiman. To be fair, this guy earned it.

Magic 2.0

This is a fun story of what happens when a program finds out they are a program. This isn't spoilers, they talk about it in the first pages of the book.

The Laundry Files

This is a British bureaucratic look at avoiding and micromanaging the end of the world to flying squid monsters. Great books about a hungry ghost and his pet errand boy.

Soy Sauce

No description i give can do this book justice. It is just amazing. There is another book that ties to it called, This Book is full of Spiders: Seriously Dude Don't Open it. If you have read cracked, or anything by David Wong can't recommend it more.

Sandman Slim

This is about a poor bastard that got stuck in hell. He gets out, but that kind of thing isn't something you spring back from.

Incrypted

These are some fun stories. It is more directed at teens and young adults, but still pretty good reads if you are into snake cults and monsters.

The Lies of Locke Lamora

A gentleman bastard, kinda jumpy story telling but think of it as a Tartino flick with time.

The Name of the Wind

Just read this, then send all the hate mail you can to the author till the 3rd goddamn book is out. For Real. :/

Malazan Books of the Fallen

This series is amazing. There is another post that I made going way more in detail about it. Really suggest you read these books.

The Iron Druid

This is a great story of a Druid looking to live his life. Though a few angry gods keep trying to make that hard on him. This is a must read for fantasy fans that are tired of the standard story.

You had me at the Night Angel Trilogy.

I like you. Have a +1.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Iron druid series is godly (punpunpun), a very well done example of urban fantasy. My only issue is the books are so short.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So many of you guys keep talking about Patrick Rothfuss that I guess I should check him out.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Quick thing about the Gentleman Bastard series, G. R. R Martin recommends them

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha, Night Angle! Saving his world with a protractor and pencil

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Just noticed this, leaving the error for your comment to make sense.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love the Night Angel series, absolutely brilliant newer style of fantasy writing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for Brent Weeks. His stuff is fantastic!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Finally some love for Sandman Slim! If you loved that, check out Daniel Faust, black magic con man and trigger man in Vegas

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol I've read all but two of these series good list suggest you read the joe ledger series by Jonathan Mayberry

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I will have to look it up thanks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ordered a few books from ThriftBooks, Way of Shadows was one of them. Don't know which will give out first, my wallet or my bookshelf.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The Belgariad is missing from this list. Son I am dissappoint.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The Belgariad belongs in a different era IMO, it was fantastic tween fantasy when it came out but hasn't weathered very well.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never heard of it, can I get a run down of it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are the first person Ive ever come across who has also read the Belgariad! One of my favorite series growing up..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recently started reading books by Robin Hobb. Starts with the farseer trilogy, fucking amazing series.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If you really wanna dig into that universe, read the series in order! Farseeer -> Liveship Traders -> Tawny Man -> Rain WIld -> Fitz & Fool.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She is a fantastic author! The Fitz and the Fool Trilogy still has one book to go and I can't wait!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My only sadness is that im already on the second book, cant wait for the third one.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With her writing pattern the third book in her trilogies often has a lot more action than the other two, so I'm really looking forward to it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MOTHERFUCKING SANDMAN SLIM YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT. A similar series to Sandman Slim is the Avery Cates series. Also, Mistborn unrelated,butgr8

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I ran out of characters

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That book was fantastic! Got any other suggestions similar?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mthe Dresden files is super good but if I hadn't brought the first 4 books with me on a transpacific flight I would have stopped 90 pages in

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The first couple are horrifically bad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say horrifically is a bit strong but yeah, they aren't very good.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the first couple start are a bit shaky but if people can make it through them the author finds his stride and the rest are really good

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OH fuck yeah

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You missed the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never read it, can I get a run down?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great sci-fi with lots of nuance. Discussions of philosophy and religion without overusing it. Won a nebula award

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really wouldn't know what to say without spoiling it. Great elements of horror, and fantasy, besides the main Sci-Fi setting. GRANDIOSE.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about the night angel trilogy grinded you? I loved it all. Also id recommend the Magician series by Raymond E.Feist

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Malazan series is so fucking incredibly good, I'm on Reaper's Gale right now. They just progressively get better as well

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Dust of Dreams is bit meh rest are amazing. Check out Essselmont's stuff too once you are done with the main.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is my absolute favorite series of books. My goal is to get this nice leather bound ones and get them all signed. No joke.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sandman Slim: What B-movies would look like with unlimited budgets. Over-the-top and bloody fantastic.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a great description of it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The nightside series by Simon r green would be a good addition to this list. But love it, GJ op

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...NOTHING FROM SANDERSON!?

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

I cannot fathom the love for this guy, he's writing is poor, and plots badly created.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's your opinion and you are welcome to it, but I heartily disagree

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have read a few from Sanderson, really love his writing, but something about his books keeps me from going back.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

In my opinion the best he's written is the short story Legion, if you ever feel like trying him again that's the one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually love the legion story. If that were to become a full novel I would read the shit out of it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's always the sequel: Legion: Skin Deep.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just throw a dart at the Fantasy section. Like, 90% chance you'll hit something good by Sanderson.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

90% chance you'll hit something WRITTEN by Sanderson. The man is a book-churning automaton

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was about to say the same thing!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The calamity series is my fav of his. All of his worlds are top notch

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those books are a lot of fun! You should check out another YA series he started called The Rithmatist!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was skeptical when I picked up Stormlight, but he was a slow burn and now I cant put down the first book in the series.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The name of the wind was so good I read both books in a 4 days it was that good (there both 800-1000ish pages)

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Took me about the same. Though my excuse is that English is my 3rd language. Officially. My Swedish sucks ass from not using it for 15 years

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read each one in a day. Then re-read them. Then re-read again.. Should read the one short story about Auri. Pretty neat

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like those books, and I can't wait for 3 (which is taking fucking forever, god dammit) I just wish the writing wasn't so goddamn verbose

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The company that translated and published Malazan Book of the Fallen in my country went bankrupt. I will be forever stuck in Reaper's Gale.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:( that's awful. Try the audio books. It's so very worth finishing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna wait a little bit ti see if any other editorial buys the rights. If not, I'll go with the english version.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But then you don't get the amazing catharsis for finishing the series! :( Also you don't get to see why Anomander is glorious in Toll.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Toll was the next one :'(. That aside, Anomander has always been glorious.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Toll makes that much more so.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like I'm the only person who didn't like American Gods. Shadow was a hideously underdeveloped and underutilized character, and 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/? the plot was just all over the place. There were a few scenes that were pretty neat, but as a cohesive piece I just don't think it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It helps if you understand the authors intentions and a bunch of mythology.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3/3 worked at all. That's the only work of his I've read though, so maybe his other pieces are better.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's funny, I just finished an all-nighter listening to Lies of Locke Lamora and opened imgur to see it here, small world.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Audio books are great, the reader foes a fantastic job.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Night Angel trilogy was fantastic

9 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 2

Loved that series.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the few series I've read multiple times and I have recommended to friends.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really? I had the hardest time reading those books. I felt such a huge disconnect with them. Only time I liked them was when they went rebel

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It sure was the comic wasn't too bad. I started reading his other series, light bringer series.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@confusedcanine also recommended the Lightbringer series. I'm definitely going to check it out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've read the first two, but can never seem to find them in my cities public libraries. :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fantastically terrible. I've seen better writing on facebook.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Omg yes, it's my favourite book series and I never see or hear people talking about it.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Unpopular opinion: Weeks' writing style is that of a teenager. His prose doesn't flow, it stutters jarringly. Couldn't finish the first book

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

I agree with this statement, but as a teenager when i read it it was amazing. Its a good intro to fantasy for young adults imo.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Prose / flow indeed is adequate at best. His strengths lie in world building. YMMV whether that compensates well enough.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. It was terrible. Women were whores or super mega ultra pure. Characters had no motivation for acting, and were boring.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seconding. comparable to Eragon by Christopher Paolini. Very bland.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Agreed. I thought it was incredibly bland and standard. Read Brandon Sanderson.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I loved the Night Angel trilogy. The description seemed kinda "edgy" in a lame way, so I had a low bar and was delighted by it though (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm curious what OP was unhappy with? Was it the seemingly rushed ending? That's kinda the universal gripe I hear. (2/2)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My gripe with it was that he tried too hard making contrasts, one chapter it's sweety-poo marriage life, the next is GORE AND CANNIBALISM.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Heehee. Wetboy."

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hehe :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It sounds like a male prostitute that specializes in watersports.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha! Now I can't detach that from "rentboy" :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's almost like Weeks did that on purpose.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's what came to mind when I first read the series.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree, hope OP sees this too but read Mistborn, phenomenal series as well

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Really? I'll have to check that out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Read anything by Brandon Sanderson, although Mistborn and Stormlight are his best. Not finished yet and will take along time.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the recommendation

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Spoilers: I enjoyed about 80% of it, the latter 1/2 of the finale felt rushed and thrown together. Abilities out of nowhere and randomness.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The books kept upping the ante, until somewhere halfway the third book the event horizon of awesome was reached.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More spoilers: Entirely unsatisfying having all the problems solved by abilities the characters pulled out of their ass.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I agree but it was his first series and I feel like he's growing as a writer and making up for it with light bringer

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I up voted only for that trilogy

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I haven't been able to pick up the third book. The first two books were pretty good, but there were so many spelling errors... *shudder*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you read any of the Lightbringer series by him?

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Really enjoying the series so far and loved the Night Angel trilogy. Would recommend to everyone!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've heard of them, but I haven't started the series. Is it good?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Better. He definitely learned a lot while writing Night Angel, and put it to good use.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is so good i often have trouble deciding which series is my favorite.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes. Yes yes yes read it read it now

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, arguably his more original work, it's all about a world where magic is based on colors ( that's a very simplistic way of putting it)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

But if you liked Night Angel, I highly recommend reading it sometime. He recently confirmed the 5th book in the Lightbringer "trilogy"

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'll check it out. Thanks :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

5th?!?! I'm still waiting on the 4th!!!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I LOVED night angel but didn't really get into the lightbringer series so much. I have all of them though so I might give it another go.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's very good, but a little slow to start. I read it over again every year or so.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The new Lightbringer book is releasing in August, if I remember correctly

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

October 25. Called The Blood Mirror

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I did the quiz. Yellow Superchromat here. That'll do!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now the important question... Boy or girl?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What're you? Are we BFFs?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Green Superchromat :D Based on this I think we would kinda get along...freak :P

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Male, so I'm a freak! But hey, I'll rock it like I rocked going bald at 19! Booyah!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recommend it over the night Angel series. I love both though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you enjoyed Brent Weeks check out Joe Abercrombie. Cold, ruthless and beautiful.

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Agree so much.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh my god I'm currently on the heroes. I fucking love these books

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just commenting to affirm that Joe Abercrombie is the shit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I will check that author out. Thanks for the recommendation.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also check out Brian McClellan's Powder Mage series. Brent Weeks needs to hurry up with that next Lightbringer book tho.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Last I heard was nov '16. Almost there...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any recommendation on which book to start with?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cheers guys

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Blade Itself is the first book jn his First Law series, start there.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What those guys said. First Law Trilogy is amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First Law Trilogy, which begins with The Blade Itself. Best Served Cold, The Heroes and Red Country follow the trilogy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Commenting so i can check him out eventuallly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like Joe Abercrombie, so I should try Brent Weeks.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a good job we don't judge books by their covers, cos some of these look painful

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This, this is so true.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But before you read those, read Pratchett.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Can you tell me what Pratchett is about in your words? Looking for a good book to read and have read most of @OP's list

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pratchett is hilariously written social commentary set in an absurd fantasy world, the early ones parody fantasy as a trope but it moves 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

from laughing so hard, in just about every book. Now, since there are so many of them it can be a bit daunting to know where to start, 3/4

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but they're fairly independent. I'd recommend either the Witches (Equal Rites) or the City Watch (Guards! Guards!) and go from there. 4/4

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is guards! guards! the first book in that story arc? My gf has it as was wondering if I could just start from there

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is, and I envy you for getting to read it for the first time. Have fun!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Guards storyline seems to be the mostly loved so perhaps start on that plotline ^_^

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always tell people to start with Small Gods.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you know, that's a fair starting point! I always get caught up in the recurring characters but that one is definitely a good intro 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Finally! One of these lists with "The Name of The Wind."

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

you mean unlike the other 8/10 that have it on there?
