My Forge

I built this to melt down aluminum cans.

Metal ingot

Pure aluminum ingot. About 30 cans in that.

My first casting

I carved my own mold for this and for my first time, I think it turned out pretty good!

First casting, but shiny!

I sanded it down to make it even and shiny.

My second casting

I used a store bought bold for this one.

Oops!

I ran out of metal halfway through now's it's only half a skull!

Hehe

I really do enjoy metal working posts like these.

Now all you need to do is make some knuckle dusters to get more aluminium!

Oooh, hey. You should cast an aluminum can.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Now there's an idea!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about iron daggers?

Congrats on meeting Papyrus in real life.

So where do you get a bitchin pier 1 imports shirt?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Haha that's actually my cousin who had recently gotten off work and came to see the forge in action.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Need a bunch of us to come over with beer so you can get more cans?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha please drink it before hand. Having drunk people around a forge/foundry isn't such a hot idea!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 1: cut a hole in the can

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit balls, and I thought my forge was a frankenstein.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why skulls though?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So for aluminum casting you use a "Reverse Mold" made of Styrofoam. There aren't alot of Styrofoam molds easily available, surprisingly.

Pier 1 imports shirt is on point tho

SAFETY WARNING - That can is galvanized. If it gets too hot, the zinc fumes can kill you, or at least give you "fume flu."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I need to work with my foundry again.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get back to it man! The only problem I was having was no ideas, however somebody suggested a chess set so yeah!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you name the forge Geordi?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ive been wanting to do this for ages! King of random makes it look so easy.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not a forge if you are just melting stuff, just saying.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What did you carve the mould from please?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So it's a reverse foam mold that you bury in sand w/ just a tip showing then pour metal into foam. foam evaporates leaving metal in place.

http://imgur.com/KRBiptQ This is the mold for the skull

Well done on recycling

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that a foundry or a forge?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Foundry specifically.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool. A friend and I made one out of a microwave years ago. Used an iron oxide lined crucible. Couldn't melt much more than tin and lead.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yikes! Sitting on wet concrete!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun Fact! I have no idea what that mysterious liquid is! After I fired up the forge it started slowly bubbling out of the seam on the can!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You built your forge well. If there was a problem with it and the bottom got too hot, the concrete could have exploded.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I made quite sure that the bottom was the thickest part of my foundry for this reason.

This is the video which inspired me to make it!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ive wanted to make it so bad, i just need the time. and the money

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly I only paid maybe $30 total? Mostly for the can and then concrete. Pipe's really cheap, as is the hair dryer.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you use Thekingofrandom's design?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I did in fact!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did that too, it works great

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How much was it to make? The video said around $50 but I figured it'd turn out closer to $80

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly it ended up around $30 for me. The can was $25 and concrete and pipe is cheap. Bought the hair dryer used for 2.50. Then the coal.

sweet. I planned on making my with my last paycheck but that plan fell through.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go ahead and start gathering pieces you know you need like the hair dryer. having part of the project will encourage you to finish!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I already have half the stuff but I was gonna buy all new stuff just to be sure it comes out good

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my poor selfs first thought was... i wonder how much you could recycle that for?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not nearly as much as you could make casting artistic pieces from it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

million dollar art, no doubt.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ain't gotta be million dollar, make $15 off of $3 in materials and soon you can drop the "poor" selling random shit on eBay.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

no recycling, not ebay. think about global warming bro jeeze. im recycling a material not trying to sell used garbage.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hell I could sell the skull for maybe ~$10-20 and I'm only paying for coal.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

il give you tree fitty

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PROFIT!!!
