Did Kevin Padian really work on Jurassic Park? I looked it up on wikipedia and the credited Paleontologist was Jack Horner.

I blame Phil

That is epic. He replied!

I tried clicking this like an idiot...

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Why was it more dangerous for the power to turn OFF with the guy inside the TRex??

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Everything relaxes. Hydraulics were holding up the head and such. Turn that off and everything goes back to resting. With so much weight...

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ahhh I see. Thank you.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Uh, they're flocking this way"........that was CGI, and fucking top stuff it was too.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Also, the computer did the CGI that WAS in the movie ended up doing South Park. Matt and Trey bought it.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The velociraptor size discrepancy has a lot to do with knowledge from the original book's publication date - at that time, the name 1/

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Velociraptor was also used for velociraptor antirrhopus, which is better known now as deinonychus.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Nnnot quite. Deinonychus antirrhopus was named in the 60s. Some paleontologists, including the one Crichton consulted, considered it a/

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

species of Velociraptor, but that was by no means the consensus.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ah, gotcha.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He means 2 meter not 2ft

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Practical effects are the best effects. Compare the visuals on Hellboy 2 to Avatar and see which one looks better after 10 years.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Both of those movies look decent to me, but I'm a sucker for fantastical landscapes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True, but I think one of them has aged a lot better.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I derive as much enjoyment from watching Captain Kirk fistfight a lizardman, so I guess "holding up" isn't a huge priority of mine.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a totally respectable way to be. Rock on, you. ^_^

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Avatar holds up really well tbh... But it was also the first and last movie that really nailed 3D!!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@ the last bit, The JP raptors are actually Deinonychus, Velociraptors were only about half a meter tall at the hip.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fun fact if you're a Tool fan: their guitarist Adam Jones worked on the JP SFX team.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Helluva baseball player too!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Saying “most if not all” were practical is a huge exaggeration. The gallimimus were 100% CG as well as the Rex and raptors at most points.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not to mention LITERALLY every dinosaur they see in that herd when they first get to the park.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The velociraptors were GUYS IN FUCKING SUITS?! My whole life is a lie - excuse me while I go get permanently brain drunk to handle this.

7 years ago | Likes 433 Dislikes 5

Not really. They hand life-sized puppets, and they had velociraptor legs that puppeteers wore on their feet.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The red sneakers make them look like the most realistic Yoshi cosplay I've ever seen. Just mount a red saddle.

7 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Not all of them. You can tell when they're cg and when they're fully present in the scene

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

The ones jumping around and being killed by the t-rex at the end probably aren't guys in suits, I'm guessing.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least that explains how they can open doors

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

One thing not mentioned is that the scene where the Trex broke through the Jeep wasn't supposed to happen.their screams of terror were real.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Oversimplification of the effects. There was a LOT of groundbreaking CGI in that film: it was originally supposed to be stop-motion models…

7 years ago | Likes 156 Dislikes 1

Didn't ILM spawn as a result of jursassic park?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

No. Lucas started ILM back in the 70s to do the VFX for Star Wars.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yeah that comment about "most if not all" being practical. no don't get it twisted, there was CG in that movie too. it was just done right.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

There was absolutely groundbreaking CGI, but not a lot of it. Less than four minutes of footage.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Practical Dino’s only appeared in ~14 minutes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do think traditional effects are the way to go, but the CGI is probably the most dumbfounding that it was done back in 1993.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

… of little puppets animated one frame at a time. Computers killed it when ILM did a 10 second pre-viz of a T-Rex waking in a field.

7 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 0

The producers were gobsmacked at the smoothness and realism achieved. They even created the DID- the dinosaur input device (later called…

7 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

The direct input device: it was a metal skeleton armature that allowed stop-motion animators keyframe movements directly into the PC…

7 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Without needing to learn computer animation. The results speak for themselves.

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

A lot of it also had to do with the compositing of the CG. For example, they made little plops in the water for when the CG T-Rex was

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Weren't the skin textures sculpted by hand and then scanned for other scenes.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Spielberg wanted, and got, 2 meter raptors, not 2 foot. He said the smaller ones wouldn’t be frightening enough.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have 14 dinosaurs. The two largest are my quaker parrot t-rexes. But my favorite is my green cheek conure velicoraptor.

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

My dinosaur is the sun conuresaurus. I never knew I could love something so much before her.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice. I only have one dino, an umbrella 'too, but she makes the noise of a dozen. I planned to get a greenwing macaw, but I was window

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's been years since I've been in a pet store. Can't stand it. All my babies are rescues w/special needs.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

shopping at a pet store and this 'too picked me. Seriously. I can't go window shopping at pet stores anymore. =/

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you're set on the macaw, start exploring the interwebs for reputable breeders. You may have to drive a far distance, to pick up 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

your new baby. But it'll be worth it. Reputable breeders are the best way to go.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They also embellished the Dilophosaurus, it was never confirmed to split venom.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I don't think they spit venom. Maybe stomach acid? Maybe they had a saliva like the Komodo dragon have.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but it was never confirmed to NOT spit venom. Eh? EH?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes it was. There are tells on the bone structure for venom sacs and the necessary musculature for venom spitting. Dilos don't have them.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that was in the original novel, though.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it was there too.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you look it up Spielberg did this on purpose. I wanted something that resembled a cobra.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was also 6 meters long and didn't have the big frill. They were not interested in making accurate dinosaurs, merely interesting ones.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The original was Sci-Fi horror, and the new ones just didn't capture that. They followed the new formula for films, and I hate them.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I started and received my AS in Biotechnology because of this movie, yeah I wanted to make an actual Dinosaur.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And an example of CGI that stands the test of time is Robert Patrick melting through the bars of the mental hospital in T2: Judgement Day.

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah. STILL looks great :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2001: A Space Odyssey was filmed in 1968 I think, and there are movies today that don't look as good (okay, except the gorillas).

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For me there were 3 groundbreaking movies as far as effects go....JP, T2 and the Matrix.

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

The Mask lol

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WETA digital literally revolutionized computer graphics, for LOTR.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Star Wars franchise, Tron, Blade Runner, Young Sherlock Holmes, and Matrix are all movies that changed the visual media with special effects

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I honestly think that ILM and Weta have the largest impact.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Starship Troopers

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only one comment about Starship Troopers, I'm disappointed in people. ST IMO holds up much better in terms of effects.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously the arachnids are still are amazing effects. It's hard to tell when it goes from VFX to practical and it ages so well

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, the majority of the T Rex scenes, like the chase and visitor center stuff, were indeed CGI, and it's pretty obvious too.

7 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Regardless, JP is still one of my favorite movies of all time.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yep. The bits that were done with CG have not aged well. Amazing through the end of the 90s, but nothing compared to quality CG since 2000.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

I dunno why you were downvoted. Those scenes were incredible back then, but today they're "ewww!" CG has gotten a WHOLE lot better!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

The only part that HAS aged well is Rexy - in the rain - in the dark. LOTS of obscuring to hide flaws.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A lot of the CG actually does hold up pretty well. It looks more like it's from 2003 than 1993 though.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Don't believe me? Compare the brachiosaurus to the nazgul from LOTR.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They could probably do a rerelease with updated special effects for the modern age but honestly I think the movie is perfect how it is.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

LOTR is the only trilogy of films that to me, has held up incredibly well when compared to anything else from the time...early 2000s.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Look up Phil Tippett, who was one of the big VFX guys on Jurassic Park. He has had an amazing career.

7 years ago | Likes 354 Dislikes 2

He pissed off the palentologists. Phil wanted to give the raptors snake tongues

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He also did a lot of the design work on Draco (Dragonheart).

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Love that movie

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GODDAMIT PHIL WE HAD RAPTORS IN THE KITCHEN

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh, we know all about Mr. Tippett’s failure...

God damn Phil Tippett, the dinosaur Wrangler. Dinosaurs got all up in the park Phil! People died!

7 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 3

YOU HAD ONE JOB!

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

He's one of the greatest SFX guys to have ever worked in film. Robocop, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Starship Troopers are all SFX masterworks

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

People died, Phil....

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Didn't do such a great job supervising though... Raptors in the kitchen, Phil. In the goddamned kitchen.

Fun tidbit: Adam Jones from the band Tool was also on the FX team!

I was about to comment that. You can see him working in the background of the making of feature.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And Terminator

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And Ghostbusters II.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And Predator 2, and Batman Returns, and Edward Scissorhands...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just stop the misinformation that is in here they weren’t utahraptors they were deinonychus

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 7

Also they used crichtons descriptions of dilophosaurus not archaeologists best representation. Real dilo could reach 23 feet long. 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and had no frill around their neck either. Also no evidence they were poinsonous and the filmakers took liberties as chrichton describes 2/3

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The "venom" as a psychoactive substance meant to pacify its victims for capture not blind them 3/3.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crichton also describes some of the dinos as chameleon like which makes them even scarier if you ask me, but didnt show uo until world.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're right and wrong at the same time. When they were first discovered, all of the dronaeosaurs were generally reffered to as 1/

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Velociraptor, and even now, it's technically not wrong to call Deinonychus Velociraptor (Velociraptor antirrhopus). I believe this was 2/

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

specifically addressed in the first book (foreword possibly) though it's been a while since I read it. Also, I misspelled dromaeosaur.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Deinonychus was smaller than the Raptors used in the film. Spielberg wanted bigger Raptors, and during production the Utahraptor was (1)

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

discovered, basically legitimizing Spielberg's desire for larger Raptors.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They weren't anything. They were invented for the books because Crichton was far more interested in a story than realism. Most of his dinos

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

were massively unrealistic. The deinonychus claim was fans trying to make it more realistic than it actually was.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Utahraptors were discovered during the production that matched closer to the screen used dinos. I watched an interview with Jim Kirkland 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

That explains the discoveries.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yep. And before being officially named Utahraptor, the guys who found the remains nicknamed it “Spielberg’s Raptor.”

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Which inspired the novel "Raptor Red" by Robert T. Bakker. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raptor_Red

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whoah, I remember that book. I have the paperback with the hologram cover stored somewhere.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’ve got one with the same cover. Reread it last year. Loved the book as a kid (mostly for the cover & art) and it’s still a great read now.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You just got learnt.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Theres a great book called Raptor Red. It's about "Spielberg's giant raptors" called Utahraptors that were found in a dig after the movie

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

still find it physically repulsive that such MIND BLOWING practical effects were created for The Thing prequel but they went with shitty CGI

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The Thing is the most disgusting film I've seen. Then I saw clips of the prequel and never felt like even trying to watch it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It could have been horrifying repulsive had they gone with the practical effects initially made. Pulsating nodules, etc. the works.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instead we got something The Mummy looked better than despite being years older

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And some of it may be true!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I learned two lots

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was also a video of chickens with taped on plungers or something like that to stimulate the long tails of dinosaurs. Surprisingly eery

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How dare you tease us and not link the video.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of it is a lie though. They had a lot of animatronics, yes, but most of their dinosaurs were really just CG.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

The true truth is that they used actual dinosaurs

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I was that kid who loved JP way too much, and had every action figure and toy t they ever released. I could build Jurassic Park 100%

7 years ago | Likes 878 Dislikes 4

Same..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, your parents spared no expense?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not gonna lie. I practiced for hours to be able to roar like the T-rex through a sustained gutteral groan thing. Idk how indid it, but I did

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I collected everything, then watched the film and was so scared by it, parents had to take it all away. 6 year old me was a pussy.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You may enjoy Parkasaurus when it comes out.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As kids, we made ID tags and made like... innate backstories for our characters (I was the niece of Alan Grant) with full academic credits

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

We played this game for LITERALLY YEARS. With each friend playing their own character when they came around.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

There were rules about who could and couldn't go into which section of the "park" or access different terminals in an emergency.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Just, uh. We also really liked JP.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

THIS IS HOW IT STARTS

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got the dude on the motorcycle that could explode into pieces and the jeep with the side net that had "damage" pieces that could come off.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My fiancé was the same way!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was that kid that never got any of these popular toys.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you have the Dino compound with the fence that attached with the big gate at the end? My favorite toy, had the little jeep and explorer

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Nope couple of friends did though and I provided a chunk of wildlife for them, 2 raptors, 2 flavors of t-rex and a dilophosaur.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, and 3 compies.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That I did!

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Book Ian Malcolm was my first literary crush.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MINE TOO

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have. My dad got me the book after I made him sit through the movie around a thousand times

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I randomly pulled it off the shelf in 8th grade (it had a big dinosaur on it why not try) One of those books that got me into reading more

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I hear there's a game that lets you do just that.

7 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 0

two games actually

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And it's actually really good. Like you don't know it's a movie tie in game good

7 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 1

Does it have a mod yet that changes the color scheme to jurassic park instead of that hideous jurassic world blue/silver?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Have you tried operation Genesis? It came before Jurassic world evolution and imo it's quite better

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure if I should emulate the PS2 version or try to get the windows version running.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Name?

7 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Jurassic Park Operation Genesis. It's better than evolution.

I have to say, I was disappointed with the size of the last island. Biggest on the map, except for that mountain they didn't mention.

Was that elaborate sarcasm or is it actually worth a buy?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've honestly not played it but the general opinion seems positive.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My comment was genuine. Same devs that made Planet Coaster
