I mean kids ask a million "what if THIS improbable thing happened??" questions every day. His niece probably isn't genuinely worried that that will happen to her

Tell your niece she's already sus for asking this question.

I love this kid in so many ways.

If a cop wants to investigate you, they'll investigate you. History tells us evidence is sometimes an after thought

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Should we be worried that our 12 year olds are asking these questions?

Apparently there was a guy who was implicated in a rape case but the problem was that he was already in prison when it happened. Didn’t have any siblings or close relatives. Turns out the guy who did it received a bone marrow transplant from him.

Do not donate to locks for love they sell the hair and throw away a decent % of it. Wigs for kids is a much better charity

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ngl, that is honestly a great question. That kid is going places.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don’t know whether to feel impressed with her critical thinking skills, or to feel disappointed at the jadedness that the first thing a recovered cancer patient will do is rob a bank…

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suppose wisdom will come in when she does proper risk analysis.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My husband and I donate our hair to children with hair loss. We have done it twice. They give free wigs. They are not looking to make money per say, they care more about the people than the money. https://childrenwithhairloss.org/

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't donate to locks of love, there are better alternatives that don't exploit peoples generosity for profit.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, considering how inept the American police force is and the whole 'For Profit' prison system you have going on there, its gonna be inevitable that one day, this is gonna get an innocent person thrown into jail. Like all the other innocent people thrown in jail because quotas have to be met and fuck everyone not related to police, government or religious groups?

Someone keeps saying there isn't DNA in the hair-that's only sorta true. Mitochondrial DNA IS found in the hair shaft itself, and that can be tested.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But MtDNA is not unique to individuals, and is shared with others who have your maternal line of ancestry. Useful for paternaty tests, mostly useless for identifying any individual, without other evidence.

If you survive cancer, you ought to be allotted one free murder a year.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell her she might be investigated but it will be easy to have the case dismissed. Also teach her about double-jeopardy, so that way, if SHE commits the same crime later, she can't be prosecuted for it. It's potentially a free pass to donate your hair.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

If she commits the crime later, then it's not the same crime. Or did you think double jeopardy meant "if you've been found not guilty of grand theft auto, then you can never again be tried for grand theft auto. Go steal cars"?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's not how double jeopardy works, and no she won't be investigated. There's no DNA in hair. There is in the hair follicle, but that requires the hair falling out, not being cut off for a donation.
And even then, having a sample of someone's DNA doesn't magically lead the authorities to them. They have to know whose DNA it is, and it's not like DNA has your name and address encoded into it.

Always have someone who can alibi you out of the crime

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I donated to Saint Baldricks a few years ago, the cops haven't show up....yet.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Saint Baldrick's, eh? Well, if you're ever in the mood to commit a crime, I have a cunning plan

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A cunning and subtle one?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It is as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning.

Does it, per chance, include the use of a particularly large collection of turnips?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's an alibi, kid. "It wasn't me, it was someone wearing a wig made out of my hair".

2 years ago | Likes 287 Dislikes 0

An alibi is being able to prove you were somewhere else, what you said is an assumption.

I love this. Donate once, and you can have a good alibi for the rest of time. :)

https://www.ishinews.com/no-nuclear-dna-in-rootless-hair-myth-or-fact/ a quick research, it is possible to get nuclear DNA from hair shaft but it's very poor quality and difficult to use.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

For that reason it takes about a dozen stands of hair to get a match with high confidence, though there is hope that AI tools will be able to improve upon current methods. I only know this because it's something one of my professors is researching

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can often pull out a hair and the follicle

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

Not when you cut it for hair donation....

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

With the stress in my life, I pull out my hair and put in a jar, then donate when it gets full. They usually reject it though. Something about not enough demand for pubic hair

There's no DNA in hair. You can get it from the hair follicle, but hair donated to Locks of Love is cut off, not ripped out at the root. So there's none of the donor's DNA in there, and that's assuming her DNA is on file with a national or international database, AND the crime is high enough priority to warrant using those resources, which her DNA isn't
Old school fiber analysis of the hair could trace it to her IF there's both samples of her hair linked to her AND they correctly match it to her

2 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 18

In short, nothing to worry about.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

...which was found to be accurate less than 10% of the time. [Obama admin did a whole forensic overhaul that Trump admin had one PROSECUTOR review and mark unnecessary]
Seems you CAN get DNA from hair shaft, it just sucks and isn't very useful. Matching proteins may be possible. https://www.ishinews.com/no-nuclear-dna-in-rootless-hair-myth-or-fact/

The FBI and CIA have received "leaked" data from 3rd party genetic testing companies like 23 and me. They have used that data to find people through family members DNA. I'll see if I can find the npr link to it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I refuse to use such a service. I don't trust the data because it's largely based on correlation of genes with other people's self reported heritage. That's also why people can't use DNA evidence to join my tribe, nor any other tribe. There's no way to verify the results are in any way actually accurate because the quality of the data is so low due to self reporting what of one's heritage is.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

... locks of love doesn't rip it out by the root? Have they never done that? Maybe I was scammed...

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Even considering all of that, I assume Locks would have proof you donated your hair and maybe can help track down who may have gotten it. At the very least, they can back you up by giving a solid reason your hair would be somewhere you never went.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Like, 90% of what gets donated to Locks of Love goes right in the trash.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If anyone is considering donating their hair, look for someplace other than locks of love

2 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 10

Please don't listen to this comment, it spreads harmful missinformation. Do your own research with Locks or Love's 990, own website, and resources like the Charity Navigator link below. Locks of Love provides wigs to kids with medical need on a sliding scale basis. For ex if a sick kid's parents/family are low income, they will get a 100% donated wig. They sell hair unsuitable for making kid's for wigs to offset the high cost of production.

Wigs for Kids

They sell it.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

NOT TRUE! See my other responses.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its been years, but my wife used to donate to them before she learned how much hair they threw away and how much they were less like a charity and more like a for profit company that does charitable things. Like I said, its been a while so I probably should have done some research before I posted my comment.

Looks like they might have changed? https://www.charitynavigator.org/ein/650755522

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are lots of complaints about Locks of Love, but all hair donation charities throw out (or use for other purposes) a lot of what is donated. Not all hair is actually suitable for making wigs, but it's not really feasible to determine that before the hair is collected. A friend of mine used to be involved with St. Baldrick's, and they did the same thing.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Shoulda went with St. Hairricks instead. probably would have been used instead of stashed away.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Eh if they were like that is a good chance it hasn't changed sadly

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

My understanding is that they get a lot of hair (from well meaning ppl) that isn't suitable for various reasons

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I've been told that any of the operations that make wigs throw a lot away because they want to do as naturally close to their original hair, and the hair doesn't have an infinite shelf life, so despite a surplus of hair by volume, much 'spoils' before they can match it to a recipient and make a wig. So basically, many should donate for a supply with variety, but don't be upset if it might never be used.

I keep the hairs I find on my toilet seat in the freezer, so I can have a youthful appearance when I get to my 60s

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Last i checked they charge families for the Wig, also if you donate, you have to go get the haircut and usually ship it to them. So you are paying for things while they make the wig for profit

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

about a year ago i was trying to donate my hair and thats what my research came across, id have to go to a place, theyd cut my hair a specific way then id have to ship it to them. and when i investigated the actual wigs they make for families thats what i found. sadly the for profit "charities" are super common, especially for veterans
