Laying weights out, pretty rusty and dirty

Closeup of the weights pre-clean

Brushed all the plates both sides with a carbon steel brush then lightly scrubbed them with an anti-rust-to-primer compound. I also soaked the larger plates with CLR and that worked really well to clear the crud off.

Closeup of the cleaned surfaces.

Cleaned plate tree

Painting the plates.

Finished tree.

Everything drying.

Finished project.

My dad had these same weights delivered back in the 60s. Mailman hated him

My weight refurbishing weekend looks a little different.. Texas roadhouse, ice cream, hot dogs, maybe popcorn at the movie. Hehe

Weight for it...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m impressed at the amount of news paper and cardboard he used. I would have used a fuck ton more.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now use them

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I will do many reps with those giant 50lb manhood plates on my dumbbells.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

well that's given me a lift

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

If you painted those IN the garage you'll have a nice haze of overspray on your car, your workbench, everything

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Did. Don't notice anything

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How much does a full set cost? I wish i had the space for it.. i live in an apartment, 4 floor walkup :O

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was $150 but I got a great deal.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why didn't you make different weights different colours? Missed opportunity

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

I like black.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I heard you never go back.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

paint the letters white. i always liked that look

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you want gainz? This is how you get gainz

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But in refurbishment you may have added or subtract weight

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Doubtful and certainly infinitesimal if I did.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, we have the exact same car down to the colour and rims #TeamAltima

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because they were too rusty to use...?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should you not have oiled them and baked them? I'm thinking in terms of that's how I trust my cast iron pans.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's the problem with rusty weights? They weigh less or what?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just too dirty to handle...like filthy from rust on your hands that gets on everything.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everyone knows the rust and crud adds plus 5 to strength.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is important people. They would have never worked of this wasn't done.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If*

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't understand how completely filthy my hands were after handling just a few of these when I was picking them up when I bought them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's pretty neat.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Weight for it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have never seen anyone own that many non-olympic plates.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's only half. I'm going to make a few sets of dedicated dumb bells for 60, 70, 80, 90, 100.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought the same thing, but there are so many standard plates on Craigslist for cheap I'm about to start using them too.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like the unwanted plates section at a used sporting goods store

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

IMO it doesn't matter to me what they look like, their job is to be heavy, not pretty.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were so rusty you couldn't handle them without completely coating your fingers in rust. That's why I just cleaned and recoated them

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I swear I've seem this before.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of people accusing me of poaching this for some reason. Must look similar to another job from the recent past.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What did you use for the final finish?

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Did you weigh them after to see if they lost or gained?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Why would I do that? This process wouldn't have any effect on the weight. And who's to say they were 100% accurate to begin with?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this process considered cardio, or weight lifting?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good question...loading back and forth from the car, garage, flipping them, etc. was a lot of low intensity work actually. Probably lifting.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was kidding, but good job!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I fucking love metal plates. Nothing like the sound of them clanging together when you take 3 or 4 of them for a ride

8 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 3

The plastic Les Mills ones are nice with their click system, but they just don't have the same feel.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Big time buddy

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Clanging' & Bangin'

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Was always my favorite doing flys with dumbbells over called clanging them together each rep

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

*over cables

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

please only do that at home and not at public gyms

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

It's not like I slam them it's just that little clang knowing you completed the rep. Plus I go to a very small local gym not a chain.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Lifting with rusty weights looks way more badass. Like a backyard ghetto gym

Until you contract tetanus

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 7

Not if you're vaccinated.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I wonder what kind of pillock downvoted me. An antivaxxer or some moron that doesn't know tetanus can be prevented with vaccine?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you look closely you'll notice these round weights are not sharp.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Eyes so keen. What kind of work do they do? 20 sets of 20?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When you simply can't weight for the finish.

8 years ago | Likes 220 Dislikes 5

Not everyone is pressed for time.

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 2

Maybe sit down on the bench for a second?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Treadmill.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

You ruined it

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Yeah, clean up your act, you jerk.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey man, cut him some slack. His dad should have been home 12 years ago.

Ever since I learned about electrolysis....I’m never hand cleaning metal again!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You have cleaned metal plates through electrolysis at home? How?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Here's a guy doing a whole engine. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/IomonJeRiXg

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Parts of an old camera, but the same idea. Mix borax and water in a plastic bucket. Attach an iron rod to the pos DC pole...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Then attach the neg dc pole to the item to be cleaned. Drop the two into the water. Don’t let them touch. You might have to turn the item.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Let it soak for an appropriate time, then pull it out and wipe it clean.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Doot

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Thanks for the reply! That's actually really awesome! If I do something like this again I might try your method!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What voltage?
