This is false "eco-tourism". It hurts the whale sharks bec it changes their behavior and become reliant to the fishermen & tourists for food

*true*
That's good. Perhaps you went to Australia, Mexico, or Indonesia for the whale sharks? In the Philippines, it started with a diving company
telling the fisherfolk to keep the krill & use to lure the species, but they now do it year round. Of course the whale sharks would now stay
bec of it's easy food. But they're supposd to be migratory & they only get 5 kinds of plankton there instd of the usual 12 around the regions
They can get injured from the boats' propellers & humans too. Source: http://dive-bohol.com/conservation/5-reasons-not-go-oslob/

Sorry I didn't know it was à Real Word and thought u were just mocking me :)
It is in French. Not English, though.
Ruthless674
It is very difficult for tourists and fishermen to provide PLANKTON to this filter feeding fish. Google it.
SittingInTheRain
My thought exactly!
The fishermen traditionally use krill for a local condiment, but is now used as lure and feed the whale sharks. Not only it's making them
stay instead of naturally migrate, they only get 5 kinds of plankton of the 12 they used to get around the regions. It's not only their beha
vior that's affected but also nutrition. Source http://dive-bohol.com/conservation/5-reasons-not-go-oslob/
when they're supposed to hunt on their own and migrate through the region. They shouldn't also be vertical like that bec of their anatomy.
briham
I don't know if you can really "hunt" krill. Also, this type of feeding seems normal with filter feeders like whales and mantas.
420eatit
This is also the reason humans as a species have enabled common denominators to thrive in our society when naturally they would be the first
To be eaten by a lion because they wanted to ride it
This is called active surface ram feeding. It is natural for the shark to do this and does not hurt the animal.
DogWithATopHat
How the fuck does a filter feeder hunt? They just swim and open their huge ass mouths.
They have no idea what they are talking about. That girl is a marine biologist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IJFJDrY2CY
Obv they don't. I don't know much about marine life but I can smell bullshit from a mile away.
As a diver and someone who loves sharks and the ocean, this got me so worked up I had to debunk every one of their comments on this thread.
Them being vertical like shown here in the vid means they're feeding off from the food the fishermen threw so that the tourists could swim
around the whale sharks. Yes it looks majestic for us humans, but it's actually causing the animals harm.
Earan
Thank you for this, that's really interesting
Thank you too for being polite. I'd like to add that I'm only speaking for the whale shark tourism in the Philippines, bec in Cancun & Austr
Eco-tourism is one of the only things raising awareness and changing the public opinion of sharks. It does not hurt them, quite the opposite
Yes I agree that it raises awareness, but it shouldn't be all year round bec they're supposed to migrate thru the region. There are also gui
Well, there are people who do it the right way, and people that harm the animals for the sake of money. It's sad, really. If people get in

This is false "eco-tourism". It hurts the whale sharks bec it changes their behavior and become reliant to the fishermen & tourists for food

We swam with them and we certainly didn't feed them nor try to attract with food? Had to wait 2h til one was found for us to swim with

That's good. The guidelines esp the prohibition of touching it, are often ignored.

Couldn't agree more! We were told specifically to stay 4m away to give her space and they made sure we followed the rules, excellent tour!

The situation may be diff in other whale shark areas Cancun, Mexico & Australia, but this activity in the Philippines is bad. My sources:

Not completely true depends on what kind of tourism company you go out with. I went shark diving and no chumming was used

Iirc it's actually illegal a lot of the time too

That's good. Perhaps you went to Australia, Mexico, or Indonesia for the whale sharks? In the Philippines, it started with a diving company

Sorry I didn't know it was à Real Word and thought u were just mocking me :)

It is in French. Not English, though.

It is very difficult for tourists and fishermen to provide PLANKTON to this filter feeding fish. Google it.
SittingInTheRain
My thought exactly!

The fishermen traditionally use krill for a local condiment, but is now used as lure and feed the whale sharks. Not only it's making them

when they're supposed to hunt on their own and migrate through the region. They shouldn't also be vertical like that bec of their anatomy.
briham
I don't know if you can really "hunt" krill. Also, this type of feeding seems normal with filter feeders like whales and mantas.
420eatit
This is also the reason humans as a species have enabled common denominators to thrive in our society when naturally they would be the first
420eatit
To be eaten by a lion because they wanted to ride it
ZippytheMuppetKiller
This is called active surface ram feeding. It is natural for the shark to do this and does not hurt the animal.
DogWithATopHat
How the fuck does a filter feeder hunt? They just swim and open their huge ass mouths.
ZippytheMuppetKiller
They have no idea what they are talking about. That girl is a marine biologist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IJFJDrY2CY
DogWithATopHat
Obv they don't. I don't know much about marine life but I can smell bullshit from a mile away.
ZippytheMuppetKiller
As a diver and someone who loves sharks and the ocean, this got me so worked up I had to debunk every one of their comments on this thread.
thirdworldrepresent
Them being vertical like shown here in the vid means they're feeding off from the food the fishermen threw so that the tourists could swim

around the whale sharks. Yes it looks majestic for us humans, but it's actually causing the animals harm.
