The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, in Britain, built between 1795 and 1805 to carry the Ellesmere Canal over the valley of the River Dee to link the coal mines of Denbighshire to the national canal system during the Industrial Revolution. It was one of the world's greatest engineering achievements of the time. For more than 200 years, it is the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain, and currently a World Heritage Site.

why did you need 2 seperate posts @OP

Why don't we have aqueducts all over cities, for travel? Like a Subway, but higher, and have it a quick stream except for loading areas

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Thats would require pumping stations to supply the constant flow, it would be a terrible waste of energy.

I'm sure Barclays Bank did a TV advert which was basically this water slides between all the skyscrapers and shops.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Aside from the elevated part, that's how people moved things prior to the introduction of railroads. Canal systems are part of world history

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Because we've invented far cheaper and easier methods of moving things - you're basically describing overengineered canals

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you're going to have it sloped in both directions you may as well just give everyone bikes and let them coast between destinations.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Because they'd be full of garbage and piss.

Just like the streets of San Francisco!

You know, I've seen these aqueducts from the roadside, and it never fucking occurred to me, perhaps I can kayak down that bad bear.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Is bad bear like a Kayaking term or can I apply it to general life? Because I want to...

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

you can absolutely apply it to general life, just something fucking awesome and big

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Romans have been gone for over a thousand years since this was built.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

Spoiler

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The point is this isn't much of a feat considering the Romans were building aqueducts over a thousand years before this one.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not a fan of Monty Python, then?

Interesting! Do you know why W.S. Gilbert was frequently drunk on his transatlantic crossings?
