Following years of litigation over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, a federal judge recently gave initial approval to a $725 million settlement between Meta and Facebook users alleging the company shared their personal data without proper consent. If you used Facebook between May 2007 and December 2022 and lived in the US during that time, you’re eligible to get cash from the settlement. While it will be a few more months before that money starts making its way to people, you don’t need to wait to submit a claim. https://www.engadget.com/heres-how-to-claim-your-cut-of-metas-725-million-cambridge-analytica-class-action-settlement-163255438.html

Meta Platforms Inc. has agreed to a $725 million class action settlement resolving claims that Facebook (now Meta Platforms Inc.) shared or otherwise made accessible to third parties Facebook user data and data about users’ friends without permission of the users whose data was shared and did not sufficiently monitor and enforce third-party access or use of that data.

The settlement class includes all Facebook users in the United States between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, inclusive (the “class period”). The settlement class does not include: (i) all persons who are directors, officers, legal representatives, alleged co-conspirators and agents of defendant or its wholly or partly owned subsidiaries or affiliated companies or employees of defendant or its subsidiaries and affiliated companies; (ii) counsel for any plaintiff whose case was consolidated into this MDL and their employees, including but not limited to class counsel for plaintiffs and their employees; (iii) the special master, discovery mediators and settlement mediator who participated in this case and their staff; and the judges and court staff, as well as any appellate court to which this matter is ever assigned; and (iv) eligible persons who elect to opt out of the settlement class.

The court has scheduled a final approval hearing for Sept. 7, 2023.

Class members who wish to exclude themselves from or object to the Facebook class action settlement must do so no later than July 26, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim form is Aug. 25, 2023.

The only way to receive a cash payment from this Settlement is by submitting a timely and properly completed Claim Form that obtains approval from the Settlement Administrator. The Claim Form must be submitted no later than August 25, 2023.

You can submit your Claim Form online or download the Claim Form and mail it to the Settlement Administrator. You may also call the Settlement Administrator to receive a paper copy of the Claim Form.

If your claim is approved by the Settlement Administrator, you will give up the right to sue the Defendant in a separate lawsuit about the legal claims or factual allegations this Settlement resolves.

It's pocket change for them as a fine for illegally selling private data. It won't change their behavior one bit.

Done. Now where's my quarter?

Reminds me of when I got my settlement check from Bank Of America back in 2013. Was for like 6 bucks.

I took one for the team and relinquished my ability to sue Meta. Gosh i hope i don't regret not being able to sue Meta all by myself.

Reading the fine print, those that were eligible, but did nothing, also relinquish their right to vote, so.. may as well

Ads and data sales have ruined the internet. Take me back to the late 90's or early 00's.

I got a payout from a Wells Fargo settlement I didn't even know about...it was "complimentary" identity theft protection for a year. :c

That .464 cents in gonna be my mad money.

With 258.3 million people over the age of 18 in the US, that's $2.80 before legal costs. I'd guess a payment of $1.82 in the end /2

I signed up. I will post how much I get. Hopefully I can get a hershey's bar with the landfall

Cambridge Analytica also helped Stephen Harper win reelection, as the Conservative party was an early buyer of data scraping, at the recommendation of the UK Tories

And yet conservatives believe China is funding the liberals, somehow

TD just settled an overdraft fee lawsuit called Abercrombie v TD Bank. Goes all the way back to 2015. I got a check for $6.12, or less than 20% of a single overdraft fee. Yay!

I got like $3 from whatever class action milk lawsuit there was a few years ago. Nearly enough to buy a gallon.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For each person who files a claim, the amount each of us gets goes down. I am betting we each get maybe $.20 or so.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't care if it's only pennies. Eat the rich.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sent mine in. Back in the day when there was a class action suit for LCD screen electronics, I got a check for like $25. Bet this check won't even be worth the gas to take it to the bank.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That data made them ridiculously rich. Our real payout should be something 100k. bankrupt those fucks

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

That's exactly what I said to people praising these headlines. They are paying out such a small fraction of what I can guarantee you that they actually made from that data.

If you quit telling people my payout will be bigger.

What I keep thinking. But so many people do not seem interested anyhow.

But remember kids, it's apps like TikTok that need to be banned because they are Chinese and they might spy unlike American companies.

I wonder what I'll spend my $1.74 on...such exciting times!

It was about that time I got suspicious . . .

Facebook gets a slap on the wrist. The lawyers make MILLIONS. The courts get their fees paid. You, as the wronged "class" will probably be lucky to get $1.50 out of it. Class action lawsuits are bullshit simply meant to enrich law-firms while simultaneously closing off avenues of potentially far greater financial damage to the company the committed the wrongdoing in the first place.

2 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 5

Then opt out of the class and get your own piece of the fat pie. But seriously, the lawsuit judgements usually include terms that prevent the company from doing whatever bad thing they were doing.

Having been part of a misclassification class action suit against a former employer, I cant help but disagree. While you are right that it may not feel like the justice everyone deserves, especially in these huge nationwide suits with millions of people, class action suits give people like me, who could never afford their own lawyer, a way to get some repayment.

Only applies to US citizens. 725 / 331 so 2.30ish.

I just need 25 cents so I can use the Aldi shopping cart.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it requires a claim form then it'll be split with way less people since most will not bother. So like... 75?

"it's not about the money, it's about making a point" -joker - did I get that right?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Pretty sure they pay the same amount regardless, just the more people join the suit, the more ways the payout gets split

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes, but it's also sort of about the money...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Opt for that prepaid Mastercard. You might be able to buy one song on iTunes.

It’s not about the money it’s the message, give me my 50 cents that cost you 10 dollars to process.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I genuinely don't recall when I stopped using it, but I just submitted my claim!

Second biggest publicly known settlement since Fox lost to Dominion. Ain't chump change.

Oh, and get my name on a list of people who submit claims for class action settlements? Nice try, Big Data.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Name, address, and email associated with your Facebook. I do love the irony of linking all that together for someone in exchange for your $1.12 for Facebook doing exactly that for someone else

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They dont use that data for anything other than claims.
