Keep it secret. Keep it safe.

Do they seriously still make them out of paper?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those magic card sleeves work pretty good to keep it safe.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here's a secret. Laminate it anyway, they can't do shit

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Accidentally left mine in a pocket and it went through the wash :|

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I laminated mine.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and we'll make it expensive and incredibly inconvenient to replace it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's so if you lose it outside it'll break down. You don't want someone finding it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I laminated mine some 50 years ago. I have used it several times and no one said a word.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mines been through the wash twice. It’s pretty ratty but didn’t ball up

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The stupid thing about lamination is that social security claims lamination breaks the security features of the card, but I'm pretty sure I have never once in my life had to actually show my social security card to anyone, usually they just ask you for the number.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Laminated mine back in the late 70's. Nobody ever cared or said a word. There's no way it would have survived decades in a wallet without laminating. Now it's just stored in a firebox along with other ancient documents.

I used a Yu-Gi-Oh card protector for mine.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lmao @op gunna be like

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I didn't buy a sleeve for it, i just put it in a pokemon card sleeve with a fire energy to add stiffening.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

god damn genius

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I put mine in a trading card sleeve. Went to the dmv and handed it to them and they didnt think twice about the oversized plastic on it. And proceeded to put it into their scanner and it jammed it. Got a crumpled card now...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didnt think they needed to scan it or id have taken it out

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great idea, going to do this now

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

update: oops i think i lost it lol

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, because that paper and ink they used 30 years ago cannot possibly be replicated by forgers.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno if the FBI is breaking down the doors of social security card laminators.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lost one a while back, easiest thing to replace, had a new one in 10 days. Not a big deal.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes the "it's not an ID, honestly" card.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just a heads up, it’s annoying but not super difficult to order a new one.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you guys need these for in the US? Only thing similar I can think of in Australia is my tax file number which is only used when setting up a bank account and other financial stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically the same. You'll also need it, clearly, when filing taxes as well as needing to provide the number (but not, usually showing the card) to a new employer so that they can report your income. It was an optional method of secondary ID when I had to get a replacement birth certificate printed.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I gave mine to a guy I met on AOL chat. He has a really good memory and if I ever forget it, I can just ICQ him.

2 years ago | Likes 190 Dislikes 0

Oh no - Hurry up. ICQ will be shut down in June. https://icq.com/

They're recommending VK? Oh, wow. I hadn't even used it in decades. When did ICQ get bought by Russia?

Just looked it up; 2010. Most of the major movers of the purchase, including Alisher Usmanov, appear to still be around and have been sanctioned since the 2022 invasion.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is not a form of id, do not carry this with you

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It can be used as a second form of ID. You can use it in the military with a drivers license to get a CAC issued or replaced.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Who says it can't be laminated? Also, fwiw, my SS card has "For social security and tax purposes - Not for identification" printed on it under the signature line. Why doesn't this one? At the time SS was enacted, average U.S. citizens did not like the idea of a national ID as they tended to be hallmarks of authoritarian nations, so it was legislated that SS wouldn't be used for that purpose.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

There's a larger document that you separate the card from with instructions. Mine from 1971 doesn't mention laminating, and says "Carry it [the card] in your purse or wallet." The modern document says "DO NOT CARRY THIS CARD WITH YOU." and "Do not laminate."

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Social Security Administration says not to laminate it: https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02202

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You're not suppose to carry your card with you at all times.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why can I not laminate it? I've never needed the actual card and couldn't even tell you where mine is. Are the lamination cops gonna show up and give me a beat down?

2 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 1

That all depends. Do the lamination cops have qualified immunity?

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 5

No laminations allowed when it comes to us social security id.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I laminated mine. I’m still a free woman.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Coz the cops can't identify you anymore?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

some places require the physical card for verification, stuff like, getting a passport issued or w/e. if its laminated it could be a forgery using the lamination to hide the watermarks or w/e.

"I'm going to get my testicle laminated!" -George Carlin

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can laminate it if you want but laminating it makes it invalid as a form of ID, same for birth certificates or any other gov documents really. If you try to use a laminated SS card, birth certificate, etc, as ID the office is supposed to turn you away. My

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Mine had been laminated for 25+ years. I've not had anyone give me a big deal about it yet.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You can't laminate it because it is illegal to. You need it every time you get a new job unless you have a passport or your birth certificate.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 20

I have never had to present the actual card to an employer. And I am an oldz.

I may have had to dig it out to show to the DMV for my new super duper driver’s license that actually lets me get on a plane and whatnot, but even then, I think the birth certificate was enough.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The trick is working jobs without a paper trail.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You need one thing stating your birthday, one thing stating you are a citizen and one thing with your social and one thing with your address. Min. Of 2 documents.

Passport proves citizenship. Birth certificate can as well, provide you were born in the country.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The reason you’re not supposed to laminate it is so that if you lose it, it will be easily destroyed by the elements (assuming that where you lost it was outside and it wasn’t inside some sort of container).

2 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 7

The reason is because it has security features to prevent duplication, and laminating it could interfere with checking those features https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/649145/can-you-laminate-your-social-security-card

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Huh, I always thought it was just so when its scanned, it might reflect the light, causing imperfect scans

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Interesting, I’ve never heard that one, just that it was designed to easily be destroyed by water in case it was lost outside.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

When it was designed, people didn't care about keeping the number secret. It only became a problem when the banking industry started using the SSN for authentication instead of simple identification.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Fun fact: if you walk in to a large bank and give them your social security number they can pull up a list of every legit and illegit account they have under your social.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its 2024, i dont think anyone asks for this anymore, unless you cant remember the number, then sure you need it then

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had a couple security and medical related jobs that needed it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I needed it to get my last driver's license a couple years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got my National Insurance card (UK) is embossed plastic like a credit card. The real question is, where did I put it the last time I used it 30 odd years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They were phased out in 2011, all you get now is a letter telling you your NI number.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I laminated mine. No one told me not to

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

The Social Security Administration explicitly told you not tol

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I haven't but I've heard that you can't. Why the hell can't we laminate them in the first place?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It not a law; just not recommended due to security features…

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

fancy this, you can just, put it in a file cabinet. Also, you can get a reprint of it, it's literally not ID.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Also, there is a limit to how mamy times you can have it reprinted. I think you get some bullshit number like 3 per lifetime?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's 3 per calendar year, 10 per lifetime.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Ah. That's a little better. There also seems to be some allowances that don't count towards your limits. Many thanks for the correction.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think if your last name changes it doesn't count to the limit.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had mine reprinted once and I've been told I don't get anymore in my own lifetime by the social security office every time I try to get a new one reprinted after a house fire. It's really hard to get an ID without one turns out

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is literally your tax payer id

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

https://www.ssa.gov/number-card/replace-card easy peasy lemon squeezy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The number is your taxpayer id. The card is a reference. You shouldn't carry the card on you because it legally can't be used as an ID because it lacks a photo or any other PII besides the number itself. Your DL is an ID because of the photo, address, et cetera.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No it's not. My driver's license is my taxpayer ID. You can tell the social security card isn't ID because it literally says. NOT ID. Again, you can just ask the office to print you a new one, I got like, 6 of them. They just give them to you, the card is pretty much useless unless you can't remember your number.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Or want to use it as a List C document (Documents that Establish Employment Authorization) for your I-9 form. All employers must complete and retain Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, for every person they hire for employment after Nov. 6, 1986, in the U.S. as long as the person works for pay or other type of payment.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You just need the number.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I don't know about yours, but mine doesn't say "Not ID" or any form of that anywhere.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Mine doesn't say anything of the sort, either.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine does, it's on the paper you shouldn't have removed the card from. It also says to sign it and put it in a safe place and to not carry it with you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have never been asked to show my SS card.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've been required to present it for every job I've had. There are probably other documents I could use, but that one was the easiest.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Have you never gotten a job?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ive gotten a job, and it was at a pharmaceutical company as an intern to sort their files, literally all i had to do was fill out a firm will all my info and my SSN and piss in a cup and i got the job, never was asked for some glorified piece of paper that means nothing

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I went my entire life without having to show it. After having been retired for 10 years I needed to use it to get a RealID drivers license. The state wouldn't accept it because it didn't have my full Name on it. Had to get a new one with the name changed.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I would have totally snapped

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Weird, i got real ID on my license and was never asked to show this piece of paper

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should have done that when you had your name change

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I never changed my name. My card didn't have my middle name on it. It came that way. The guy at the SS office said that happens sometimes.
