This author gave out some eARCs (ebook advanced readers copies) of a book and then about a month later posted this on her instagram stories.

Btw it does not cost any money to send an eARC. I send them out all the time. DM me and I’ll send you one now. Theft is assuming they were going to buy it if they didn’t get a free one, which, no.

For the record, this is not at all how you handle this situation and it is overall a Dick Move

People protested after seeing this that they never even received their eARCs or that it had only been a month and they hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet, they were not given a hard deadline of any kind. A lot of them left passive aggressive bad reviews in revenge

You reap what you sow lady

Lesson to take away: If you’re ever an author, don’t do this.

I personally love random drama from obscure subcommunities so hopefully you do too! There’s tons of it. Here’s more:

Emily Duncan wrote a fantasy novel full of Jewish stereotypes where the Jewish coded people used blood magic and were evil. She made a public apology but in it she specifically said she did it on purpose and tried to be sensitive about the subject material. So that didn’t go over well. The community was so outraged that a book box (owlcrate) that did her books had to issue refunds

Even better one: author JM Buckler started whining about haters and bullies when people told her that her books (autocorrected to boobs at first lol) didn’t have good representation. She protested that she only had 20k followers so it’s not her responsibility to speak out on anything. She then blamed woke culture for her recent bad reviews and started blasting the reviewers on her page. And then she went off the deep end and started posting a whole bunch of conservative shit and pro trump shit on her author account. She did a big dramatic video about why she was leaving social media forever and was gone for like a month then came back and started a group called “free readers and writers” from the “tyranny of wokeness” ie having people of color represented properly in your book and/or not queer coding your villains. Many parody accounts followed. She’s now a laughingstock.

Another one: an artist who paints bookish scenes (I forget her name, she blocked me immediately) (edit: sweetsequels) made a post in like 2017 saying “why are all of you so worried about black people being killed by the police when thousands and thousands more children of every color are murdered by abortion every year” and then blocked everyone who disagreed and continued to spew bullshit on her business page. Which. Not a smart business move.

Another one: Alex aster, author of lightlark, went viral on TikTok about her book and got a publishing deal from it, rave reviews, recommendations from famous authors, even a movie deal before it was even published. But when regular people actually got the books, one star reviews came flooding in. Turns out the chick is an heiress who was already published and her sister is the ceo of a marketing firm. So not quite the Cinderella story people envisioned. She’s now like one of the most hated authors out there.

There’s lots more, but it’s really only entertaining when the author is at fault and not when they’re forced to reveal deeply personal info/trauma because of it (Lindsay Ellis and Becky Albertalli for example). Tbh I’d find it delightful if I weren’t scared it would happen to me.

Puppy and baby tax

Edit: wow! I never expected this to blow up so much! Thanks everyone for your interest in my work! https://www.amazon.com/dp/1987670639 is the link to my first series and I have another about Aztec vampires and will happily give eARCs to all of you. No strings attached!

Never name a main character after yourself, they almost always end up as Mary-Sues…and it can reveal you to be self-involved prick as above.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'm reporting ever imgurian who doesn't upvote this in the next 36 hours. If you wanted legal trouble, what's wrong with you?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"like nothing every happened" oof. Not even editing her own threats

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So supposing I post an ARC of one of my short stories here... do I get to sue you all?

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Good fucking luck lol we’re all poor

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of that female streamer that yelled at her patrons and audience to give her five dollars each.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What happened to Ellis sucked. I prolly should actually read her stuff, it's somewhere in my read pile.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I should buy her book just to support her tbh

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're both pretty great, honestly.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Blue cheese has mold in it.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Indy author here - How dumb can you fucking get? ARCs are a percentage game. The real worth is word of mouth in online book groups.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oooo do you know any good groups

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The depends on what you like to read.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also I'm pretty sure giving shit if they review is against the terms of service an Amazon

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Author Review Copy?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Advanced review copy. Did I say author?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a simple question as to what ARC meant. What a bizarrely hostile response to an inquiry.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh sorry I didn’t mean for it to sound that way. I just genuinely thought I may have gotten it wrong

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow...let this be a lesson to any new author. Please dont treat your readers like this. I have six published books in scifi...im shocked...

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

These stories make me miss Lindsey Ellis YouTube

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Poor Lindsay that was brutal

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’ve seen her on YouTube but don’t know the book story… whad she do?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She said raya and the last dragon was an ATLA ripoff (true) and a bunch of white people called her racist and dug up everything she’s ever

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Done “wrong” and she had to reveal a whole lot of past trauma and quit YouTube

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah that video was rough. I felt dirty for having watched it. Fuck people, right? I did buy and enjoy both of her books, so maybe good.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel my boobs are also severely under-represented in media. As a guy, my feelings are hurt. :)

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 6

How does it feel to make fun of underrepresented, oppressed, erased minorities? This is about people, show some respect.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

No, this is about a writer getting wrecked online by being a jerk. Lighten up, and learn to laugh. Dingleberry.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

BRB, gonna 1 star Yelp your boobs

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Shit like this is what I go to r/hobbydrama for. Definitely recommend it if you want crazy stories like this from obscure communities.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Omg I must check it out

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You have months of reading ahead of you, that's one deep rabbit hole

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cracking up at the “legal action”. Please, try to sue me and see what any lawyer or court says.

"I charge $250+ an hour, and you'll get maybe $15 (or whatever the book retails for) back from the reviewer."

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Attorneys fees are only awarded in exceptional cases, so this comes up fairly often, actually.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: Charles Dickens took criticism on his books like when he wrote a Jewish coded side character but it was mostly stereotypical/

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And his real life Jewish friend pointed it out so he changed it. That why his books have various editions

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Question: Is the Aztec vampire one about vampires in Aztec times? Or are they Aztecan vampires in a more modern era.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aztec times! It’s not actually called the Aztec empire because I made some changes but it’s pretty close

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

those in glass houses..

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When I accept an ARC of a book I understand the author or publisher expects a review. If I don’t do that I feel bad. But to suggest there is

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

legal recourse if I don’t is ludicrous, and as others pointed out self-defeating.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and against TOS of many review sites

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, what happened to Lindsay Ellis was such bullshit. It's a damn shame she got bullied off the internet, her videos were excellent.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It really is. Xiran jay zhao has a whole video about how right she was too.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anything but unconditional ARCs violates TOS (https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G202101910). Report em

3 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

this makes way more sense XD

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

came here to say this. She's totally violating Amazon's TOS.

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

How can we report this author? She needs to permanently banned from Amazon at minimum.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

They should be charged with something and they should never be allowed near art&entertainment.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

#4 This one doesn't even seem vengeful, but an honest attempt at a fair review, albeit rushed. Good on her

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Obscure niche drama is what you want? Say no more! https://old.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hey, we both thought of the same thing! You were just a minute faster, it seems.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's also stupid to think that they wouldnt be sharing it or talking about it with family and friends. Which isn't a review on Amazon either

3 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

The thought of legal action for not leaving a review is kind of horrifying also.

3 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Isn't that also extortion? I can't remember if that needs to be explicitly for money, but "do X or I will make false reports of theft" /1

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

smells extortion-y. There was no prior agreement to review by any deadline, and in any case she'd have had no right to report theft for it /

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So it's it even like it's enforcing a contract or settling (where "do X or I do Y" is allowed) /3

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’n also pretty sure it would just get thrown out, or be an easy win

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

It’s such a bitch move even if it WERE possible

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It cracks me up that the author didn't realise she was gonna get a load of bad reviews by threatening people ?

3 years ago | Likes 1106 Dislikes 1

She is entitled…

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Lmfao!!!

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Classic narcissistic personality trait.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Considering the reviews of her characters she doesnt think too far for alot of things

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not to mention it may well have been the reviewer elected not to review b/c "if you don't have anything nice to say..."

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This is me. I don’t leave reviews unless I have a good one to give. Rarely do I leave a bad one but sometimes it’s necessary.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean in fairness... Now it's here with 31,000 views. That's a lot more people who know it even exists now.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fuck around...?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She isn't smart

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The beatings will continue until morale improves

3 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe she just want publicity. Or maybe just stupid. Hard to tell.

3 years ago | Likes 160 Dislikes 0

Por que no los dos?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

“Any publicity is good publicity” is a gamble that assumes publicity is widespread. If it only touches people in your niche, you’re not /

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

/going to get a new audience, but only piss off the only people who would have engaged with your work.seems that happened here.

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yeah that saying of any publicity is good publicity or whatever it is

3 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I'm curious enough to have mildly considered reading the first chapter or so, but I'd have just pirated it after seeing the author's antics

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s honestly kind of true. But those bad reviews are hard to bounce back from

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

A genuine idiot

3 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 0

As the wife of an indie author, that's not allowed by Amazon. They can remove people from their arc list, but that's all. Requiring a 1/?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Review is a form of compensation, which is prohibited and could get the author banned from Amazon. Will get more deets shortly 2/?

Per Amazon community guidelines: Authors and publishers can continue to give readers free or discounted copies of their books 3/?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if they don't require a review in exchange or try to influence the review.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also sounds like the Emily in the book is a self-insert.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Write what you know

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which is a shame because it’s apparently lowkey fatphobic. I’d at least make my self insert three dimensional.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a 290lb man this makes me drier than a freeze-dried slice of cake.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do not know how to interpret that

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If the book comes with obligations, it isn't free.

3 years ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 2

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

You are correct. Under contract law this would be an agreement. There was an offer (read book but post review), consideration (free book

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

what? if there is nothing in the "contract" about a fee to pay for not made reviews then she is just talking out of her ass...

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not true, if man A at a market offers to give an apple to man B if B will get him some water and B accepts then there is a contract even if

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is no stipulation that B owes A if he doesn't get the water. The law would then say B did not perform and owes A a reasonable

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Compensation for the apple. Just as in this case the author offered to give a good (the book) in return for a service(writing a review).

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From the offer and a review from the consumer), and acceptance (we don't see it but it can be presumed since they got a copy.) That is a

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Contract. Nonetheless, the author is an ass. And of the contract did not have a time limit the court would automatically add the term and it

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Likely would be along the lines of "leave the review within a reasonable time." "Reasonable time" would be hard to pin down and u'd want to

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at local caseload to get a rough idea.
