Well this isn't a letter...

What is this, a book?

Leave it to a STEM school.

Contains a PDF acceptance letter and a webpage with the full acceptance packet, important dates, housing information, all that stuff. Also, it's a 4 gig drive, most of which is empty space. So bonus.

Dude im going there!!! Cant wait to see who you are this semester haha

Congrats on getting accepted OP, that campus is gorgeous and the labs are fantastic. You're definitely going to enjoy it.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My husband and I drive past this on the way south to North Port. We call it the lobster vagina. But congrats!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just got accepted into UCR and got a scarf with my acceptance packet.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this a school that doesn't know how to finish a sentence? You're the next?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Woah, what a coincidence, I happen to be in my last year at SPHS, nice seeing a fellow Polytechnician.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

$2 dead dinosaur usb in a dead tree box protected by dead dinsaur foam.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, Florida. Carry on.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

I'd rather have my Brown acceptance letter that I crumpled up with disgust when I realized I hadn't received and scholarships/assistance.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"You're the Next" and then it looks like a picture of a UFO. Nice of them to give you advanced notice to get your affairs in order

This is going to be a thing.... "Neat"

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4GB?! What is this? 2004?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Got my first USB drive in 2004 from a Samsung recruitment event on my campus, 128MB. Worth about $70 retail at the time.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As nice as the gesture is, I wouldn't trust a flash drive anyone sent me, because, y'know, there could be anything on there.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

(2/2) Now if the PDF is the trojan (or is as well), or you're stupid enough to run an executable from it, or macros...God help you.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, even if it's an accredited university.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Funny story. It's actually not accredited yet.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Burner box that isn't connected to the internet. Basic laptops are super cheap, and bootable ISO should take care of any autorun nasties.1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only 4 gigs?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What does "You're the next." even mean???

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If they're going to send it in electronic format why not just use email?

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Need to justify his life long crippling debt somehow.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're trying to be flashy to hide the fact that they are not accredited. (See what I did there)

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

lol a for profit university in tennessee sent me one like this. don't be impressed.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

Guess where your tuition is going!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, instead of a tree that can regrow, lets mine the minerals ore and petroleum to create this thing. Then wrap it in a dead tree anyway

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Trees use minerals to grow.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Very little in comparison. Trees are mostly bound water and air.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And carbon. Lots of carbon.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, the carbon is from carbon dioxide. I consider that part of the air.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about the cellulose and lignin?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4gb sticks are the new super cheap. I bought a 8gb stainless steel drive for less than $5. When I saw the price, I was all WHAT the WHAT?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"You're the next" really should be "You're the first." I'm fairly sure Florida Poly is so new that they haven't graduated a class yet.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

the carbon cost of that packaging would be much much higher than a "dead tree letter"

11 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

Not to mention the materials it's made from.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably could have just sent an email (and maybe a postcard saying to check said email)

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

That's too boring

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The school I go to did nothing. You went and checked your application and at the top it said "ACCEPTED: YES"

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

10/10, would forget I'm in school.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

However the flash drive is reusable and can save paper in the future too. Plus have you seen paper copies of registrar's guides?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

flash drives are quickly becoming obsolete too with cloud storage. That's true about the registrar's guides though, they should be digitized

Online storage would still probably have a smaller footprint that a cheap flash drive

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also because the infrastructure is already all in place, saving a few PDFs on the cloud will take up next to no space

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Almost worth the crippling debt. Woop!

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

'look at all the cool things we can do with your money!'

That's the beauty of internet sites like this: You be whatever you are, I will be whatever I am.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably has a virus on it that will open a back door so the school can access your computer. I hate using flash drives from unknown sources

11 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

In those cases I load a live linux cd and check what's inside, I also do that when I connect mine to other PCs

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're not accredited so I wouldn't trust them even with the information.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Open in a VM, print relevant documents, format drive.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

That wouldn't stop anything.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It is really sketchy that they didn't provide a printout or any indication of the contents.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Are you all really so paranoid that a school in nowhere Florida is going to install government back doors? Y'all need to go outside.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Perhaps not a government back door but tons of schools install back doors-type things that without you can't use their internet.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I worked for a government agency, and we were not allowed to put flash drives on any networked computer because they had too many problems

11 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 2

hey, to be fair, the guy's excited about going to a non-accredited """"university""""

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 6

Florida Polytech is brand new, just opened. No one can get accredited that fast, but it's a public school not a for-profit "university".

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Thought it read "you're next" then i was scared for OPs safety

no. universities are typically broad institutions with colleges of liberal & fine arts, science & technology, education, health, etc.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. Basically a school that focuses on those fields.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

The useful fields!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Pissoff with the stem circlejerk,

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

There are plenty of other useful fields. Things like law and economics are necessary for a society to function on a larger scale.

This happened to us at ECU when I was first starting there back in 2013. Actually, they used the same exact kind of flash drives.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Since they're giving you an USB memory, text-ebooks would have been nice too...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's how I like it

One of my roommates found a USB on the street, and took it and put it in his computer. It opened up a browser to some commercial page.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was really spooky but not malicious. Though I'd imagine it well could be. The more you know.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not too hard to make a file that opens a webpage.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Teslacrypt. Cryptolocker is reversible if you can find where the key was put on the PC. Teslacrypt keeps the decryption key on a remote 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

has anyone tried a bruteforce hack or does it destroy everything after a few attempts?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't think anyone has had time to try. IIRC it only gives you 24-48hours (or less) to pay up before the key on their servers gets wiped.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both of them did AES encryption, and stored the key on a remote server. Cryptolocker's dev is just an idiot; e.g., v3.0 was cracked by KSN.

STEM does not imply skill with computers. My ME roommate manages to blue screen Windows 7 two or three times a month.

11 years ago | Likes 435 Dislikes 6

Try running Windows 10, that motherfucker bluescreens on me at least once a day at the moment

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You mean the blue screen of death?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to be fair, I'm pretty damn good with computers are cause BSoD all the time. mostly when fucking with it. (pushing overclocks, or probing

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

system processes for information was a fun one. I would probe for what had hooks to what files, and since windows 8, it would rather BSoD)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im good with computers and mine BSODs up to twice a week, there's a bad driver but I'm too lazy to figure out which one and fix it

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, your roomate is a ME and everybody knows how Windows ME shits all over itself.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My Compsci roommate didn't know what torrenting was, and always uses sketchy streaming sites with no adblock to watch movies...

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm in bioscience engineering and I'm one of the few who knows how to write a working program.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

HOW?! The only times i get bluescreen these days is hardware failure

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's probably got a faulty memory stick or a driver problem. Blue screens are usually not due to user error. -an IT guy

11 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Well unless they often start kicking their computer so hard the motherboard starts losing components.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or being at the upper limit of an overclock and not having enough voltage.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So how do you fix the driver problem if it's with the device and not the computer? I've got a USB controller that's been bluescreening my /1

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

laptop, and I really don't want to buy a new one. I've tried reinstalling the drivers multiple times but the problem persists.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you grab the drivers from the manufacturer's website instead of just reinstalling from Windows Update?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which, come to think of it, is a bit of a computer skill on it's own.

11 years ago | Likes 267 Dislikes 1

Or just a lack of updating Drivers for their hardware.

11 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

Or just faulty hardware

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sometimes drivers can get the hardware to work right... And sometimes you have to send it back to replace/fix it.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 7

You just got SERVED

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Hardware has drivers. This lets it run. Sometimes it glitches, and can cause your computer to BSOD. It gets patched, and you update drivers.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I could BSOD WinXP all the time with some half-assed drivers for my sata ports. Start the computer and hope they load right, or BSOD+restart

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry Reddit OP, speaking as a USF student Florida Poly used to be USF Lakeland, and they aren't accredited right now :(

11 years ago | Likes 376 Dislikes 4

Yeah, they aren't a real school till they get a div 1 or 2 football team.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha. Well I meant Bulls as in USF. Our sports teams aren't particularly good.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember watching them build that thing. It looks like it was assembled out of whale ribs. Sucks to not be accredited thought

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm glad someone confirmed this. I didn't want to sound like a dick, but that looked kind like a gimmick.

11 years ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 1

".org" ... ouch

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Its actually really great. USF gives us a lot of shit because we broke off, but we're only unaccredited because we're new.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

I can understand breaking off, the original plan was for Florida Poly to stay USF Lakeland until it was accredited and then split, though.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Which makes sense in it's own right, but I doubt I would have gotten my inaugural scholarship were that the case. So I'm not complaining.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

except a lot of things like Loans and scholarships require you to attend an accredited school. people don't want to hire unaccredited grads

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

We are expecting accreditation within a year (unsurprising considering the seriousness of the courses) and provide our own scholarships.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What happens if a school isn't accredited? don't you still get a degree??

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes it is. Yes it is. And wtf is wrong with you, it's the hardest of sciences. respectively.

Broadly, if an advance in a field can be described as an 'invention' instead of a 'discovery', it is not science.

Why. I'm sorry but art is not the same as the 4 others.

Exactly.That's why I hate it.

Because then The "STEM" people can't pretend their education is better.

because we are. we get stuff done

The STEM is usually referenced because they all have difficult to learn high in demend jobs. Art isnt part of that

Music was considered a science way before technology and engineering were studied as they are today.

Music was part of the quadrivium, four sciences taught to pupils after they were taught the trivium (grammar, logic, rhetoric).

The quadrivium consisted of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music. Music is highly mathematical, and it's sad to see people dismiss it.

I think we found the music major...

People who are downvoting me are dumb STEM dorks who apparently think history isn't important, either. Sorry we don't all have a tech fetish

This is the most ignorant post you've made tonight. I feel sorry for you. For what it's worth - I love history, minored in it.

That's nice, dear.

Probably because music was there before technology or engineering ever really started?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And, according to some linguists and musicologists, before spoken language. Ignoring the arts and music in particular is just plain stupid.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But music as a science came after engineering. It was developed during the medieval era, well after, say, Roman technology and engineering.

Music teacher. The world would be a really boring fuckin' place without artists, and studies have shown that kids succeed more with arts ed.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Nigga I never said it wasn't important. I'm saying it isn't in the same categories we should be promoting b/c we need more kids in STEM.
